Aytakin Aliyeva, the Founder of the Femigrants Foundation, organized a startup pitch night at the Hyatt Hotel in Santa Clara.

Photos from the Femigrants Forum 2024 at Plug and Play Tech Center.
They tell the story visually.
But here’s the “backup story” you don’t see in the frames.

You don’t see the hours before check-in.
The tiny details that no one notices… 
until they feel the difference.

The last-minute runs.
The silent stress.

I remember standing on that stage area before anyone arrived.
Looking at the chairs.
The lighting.
The backdrop.

And thinking: This room has to feel different.
Not “another Silicon Valley event.”
Not cold.

So I did what I always do.
I went into detail-mode.

I personally decorated the stage.
Because I wanted to create a space that helps speakers 
breathe, feel welcomed, and speak from a good place.

Then the guests' tables.
Table by table.
With the volunteers.

We decorated every single one so when people sat down, 
it felt intentional—like someone planned for them.

And yes… I personally did the speakers’ and VIP tables. :)

I also curated the speakers one by one.
Not by who’s the loudest online.
Not by “big titles” alone.

Because building Femigrants, I’ve learned:
Success is personal.
Impact is shared.

When a leader is willing to show up with humility…
share the messy parts… and
give back to the community…
that changes the room.

That’s why we’re selective.
We prioritize humility.
Authenticity.

And a real willingness to serve the community—especially
the next generation of immigrant leaders trying to find their way.

Even the food had a story:
In 2024, we brought in a Mediterranean caterer led
by an immigrant woman entrepreneur, Suzan.

She was the first sponsor of our very first Annual Forum in 2019.
Back then, we were building with faith, not budgets.

So when we finally could pay for catering in 2024,
she was the first person I reached out to.

Because I don’t forget who believed early.
And I love when the community comes full circle.

If you ask me what makes Femigrants different from the 
thousands of events happening in Silicon Valley every day, 
it’s this:

Community shows up here to contribute.
Not just to take.

To support & open doors for someone else.

And I can’t thank Mir Kanan Hasanzade enough for helping us
access the Plug and Play Tech Center in 2024. 

That support helped us create a space that felt bigger than
an event — it felt like a community.

This year, 2026 - we’re building an even stronger forum.

I walked into a “founder + investor networking” event… and the investors were literally hiding in a separate room.

Not joking.

About a year ago, I showed up to an event that promised to connect founders with investors.

I wasn’t there to pitch. I came to support the organizer — community builder to community builder.

The first room was packed.
100+ founders.
Energy. Conversations. Old friends. New intros.

Then I heard noise coming from another room.

So I walked in.

And… wow.

A small group of investors standing in a tight circle.

Closed. Gated. Comfortable.
Mostly white, wealthy guys, with a few women nearby.

A few more founders walked in.

The circle stayed closed.

The vibe was loud and clear:
Don’t approach.

I finally spotted one investor I knew. We exchanged a few words.

And I walked right back to the founders’ room — with this heavy feeling in my chest.

Because here’s what I realized:

One room was full of founders hoping for a real shot.
Hoping for a conversation. A connection. A door to open.

The other room was full of investors… acting like the door didn’t exist.

And that made me upset.

That experience changed how I host rooms.

I started creating founder–investor brunches where nobody feels pressured to pitch or perform.

You sit. You eat. You talk like humans.
You build trust first — because trust comes before capital.

Now I’m taking it to the next level.

At the Femigrants Annual Forum 2026, I’m inviting investors.

Not just to listen to public pitches.
Not just to give honest feedback.

But to

Last Saturday, I joined the Influence and Impact event as a panel speaker. 

The event and panel were moderated by Sara Anderson and we talked about the importance of storytelling, owning your sat on a table, and leadership styles to stay true to your identity.

Women’s Day should not be celebrated.
Not the way we do it now.

One stage. One hashtag. One day.

Now let me tell you why it absolutely should be celebrated —
just not for 24 hours.

Because for decades, women were unseen.

Our ideas were repeated louder by someone else.
Our sacrifices were called “support.”
Our leadership was called “help.”
Our work stayed in the shadows.

So yes — when one day finally shines a light on women, it feels big.
It feels overdue.
It feels emotional.

But here’s what may surprise you the most.

In many post-Soviet countries, companies give women flowers, meaningful gifts, and tangible appreciation on Women’s Day, March 8. 

It’s visible. 
It’s direct. 
It says: We see you.

In most American corporations?
Another panel.
Another sponsored talk.
The same topics are recycled.
The same buzzwords: “empowerment,” “seat at the table,” “breaking barriers.”

Claps. Photos. LinkedIn posts.

And then?

Very little structural change.
Very few more women in real power.
Very few promotions are tied to those stages.

Here’s the uncomfortable debate:

Is it better to talk about empowering women…
Or to make a woman feel valued in a real, personal way?

Because sometimes a thoughtful gift, a curated experience, a room designed intentionally for women leaders to connect and be celebrated — carries more impact than a beautifully branded panel discussion.

Visibility is not a microphone.
Visibility is recognition.
Visibility is opportunity.
Visibility is access.

Women’s Month should not be performative.
It should be intentional.

I’m joining the "Startup First, Visa Follows" event as a speaker today.

The event brings together immigrant founders, investors, immigrantion lawyers, and tax advisors.

Today is International Women’s Day.

Back in my country, it was celebrated everywhere.

Flowers. Appreciation. Visibility.

In America, many brands don’t even run sales on this day.

Here it’s often called Women’s Month instead.

And companies mostly focus on speaking engagements.

For the last 10 years, I’ve seen the same pattern:
corporate events, women’s speeches, and the same buzzwords repeated every year:

“empowerment”
“breaking barriers.”
“seat at the table”

But honestly, I haven’t seen much change in the numbers yet.

Are women founders raising significantly more capital?
Are more women stepping into C-suite roles?
Do women no longer have to make the painful decision between motherhood and career?

From where I stand, the progress still feels very slow.

And I see it clearly in my work as a community builder.

One of the biggest practical challenges I face when organizing events is finding C-level immigrant women speakers.

Two things happen almost every time:

1️⃣ There are not enough immigrant women in C-suite roles yet.
2️⃣ The women who are in leading roles are often tied to corporate-sponsored speaking engagements only.

Many are not open to joining public events and speaking authentically about real challenges.

And that makes me very sad to see that we are still behind the women's empowerment we have been talking about for decades.

So this year, I decided to do something different.

I’m not organizing a public Women’s Month event.

Instead, I’m hosting a small private dinner for 15–18 immigrant women leaders at a nice restaurant.

To connect without any bluff — just real conversations on a human level.

This Nigerian-American immigrant saw something that broke her.
An emergency. No blood. A life lost.
She built an “Amazon for blood.”

It started with one childbirth that shook her for days.


She’s Temie Giwa-Tubosun.

Her parents moved to the U.S. when she was 10.

She joined them in Minnesota at 15.

During her internship, she witnessed something that shook her life.

A pregnant woman in a dangerous labor.
The mother survived surgery.
The baby didn’t.

Temie later shared that she locked herself in a hotel room for days afterward.

Because she couldn’t process what she’d just seen.

And then something clicked:

In emergencies, hospitals don’t just need doctors.

They need blood—fast.

Not tomorrow.
Not “we’ll figure it out.”
Now.

So she went back to the question most people avoid because it’s messy:

First, she built a nonprofit to mobilize blood donation and awareness.

Then she built LifeBank—turning blood delivery into logistics.

No hype.
No “innovation theater.”

Just the hard work of building a system that moves on urgency:

	•	drones
	•	whatever it takes

And she did it while facing what many founders quietly carry:
• Gender bias
• Funding pressure
• The brutal reality of building in high-stakes environments

Everyone is raising millions of dollars.

You see on LinkedIn almost every day.

First, you get excited and inspired.
Then you think you’re missing a train.
You feel like you are way behind the game.
You get discouraged from continuing your work.

This is a normal reaction when you compare.
Comparing yourself impacts your passion.
It prevents you from growing healthy.
It pushes you for wrong choices.

How not to get into that trap?
Learn about their journey & stories.
Accept - there is no overnight success.
Avoid comparing your success with theirs.

On LinkedIn most things look big.
You don't know the sacrifices they made.
Instead of comparing your results vs. theirs.
Check where you were at least 10 months ago.

If you still feel behind, talk to people. 
Who is familiar with your journey.
Who had similar experiences.
Who is ahead of you?
To support you.
To guide you.
