No. 1: He took advantage of being early to the Slack Marketplace.

He built up 700 customers, stacked reviews and now competitors are too far behind to catch up.

Slack is now their #1 source of signups.

Next biggest source is SEO.

Jean-Yves developed a real passion for culture and employee engagement while running his previous startup, PaletteHQ.

Two powerful lessons from J.Y. here:

1. Being early and riding a wave is a good strategy (if you’re confident the wave will get bigger). Similar to Warmly with nametags. Build on someone else’s wave (Zoom for Warmly, Slack for BuddiesHR), get in early and you’ll be miles ahead by the time everyone else catches on. We’re seeing this now with Clay / GTM agencies.

2. Choose channels that fit your own style. SEO works for BuddiesHR because they’re good at it. Podcasting works for me because I like talking to people. Pick channels you can actually win at.

But the most important thing you can learn from Jean-Yves:

Every startup has three clocks running against them. Most founders only watch one until it's too late.

1️⃣ Clock one: The learning clock

How fast you discover the truth about your market?

If you have not spoken to five users this month, this clock is already ahead of you.

Your roadmap starts to drift, even if your team ships fast.

👉 One move this week:

Block two hours in your calendar, book three user calls, do not move them for anything.

2️⃣ Clock two: the product clock

How fast you can change the product without breaking trust?

Hire a senior who lays boring, stable foundations, your product clock speeds up later.

Stack everything on a cheap junior and the latest trendy tech, it feels fast now, then every small change becomes surgery.

👉 One move this week:

Pause new features for one sprint, pay back the ugliest bit of tech debt, add tests or monitoring around it.

3️⃣ Clock three: The cash clock

How many months of real runway you have at current burn?

That tiny integration you promised on a sales call, it might cost you three weeks of work, which is almost a month of runway.

👉 One move this week:

List your next five planned features, write how many dev days each costs, convert that to runway days, then cut the one with the weakest payback.

Be careful – you can't optimize all three clocks at once. You'll need to pick your fight.

Which clock is hurting you most right now, learning, product, or cash?

And what is one decision you will make this week to slow that clock down?

If product discovery does not live on your calendar, it will die in your backlog. Open your calendar from the last 14 days:

How many sales calls, and how many real user conversations?

If that second number is close to zero, your roadmap is guesswork.

Here is a 2 week discovery rhythm for founders who hate calendars:

Total slot time, 4 hours that will feel like 5 or 6 with context switching.

👉 Week 1: Talk to humans

Pick one sharp question.

Examples:

→ "Why do trials stall after day 3?"
→ "What made you almost not sign up?"

Block a 90 minute slot on Tuesday morning.

Stack three 25 minute calls with current users or fresh churn.

Use a simple invite line:

"Can I steal 20 minutes to learn what almost made you quit? I am not selling anything, I am fixing things."

Right after the last call, spend 30 minutes dumping notes into one messy doc.

Tag comments by problem, not by feature request.

👉 Week 2: From insights to action

Block 60 minutes on Monday.

Read your notes, pull out 3 patterns that keep repeating.

Ask one hard question:

"If we change only one thing next sprint, which pattern would move the needle most?"

Block another 60 minutes on Thursday.

Write a tiny change your team can ship in under a week:

→ A new success email on day 2 of trial.
→ A one line change on the pricing page.
→ A simple in app prompt for stuck users on day 3.

I saw too many founders skip this rhythm for 3 months.

Their backlog fills with guesses, their team builds faster, and they learn slower.

You are not too busy for discovery.

You are just letting everything else win.
