The Most Underrated Skill in Marketing: Saying “I Don’t Know”

When I started my career, I knew a few things really well… and almost everything else, not at all. But I felt this pressure to have every answer. I worried that if I admitted I didn’t know something, clients would think I wasn’t smart enough or experienced enough.

So I did what a lot of early-career marketers do, even if they don’t want to admit it. I guessed. I dressed up assumptions as answers. I tried to sound confident so I didn’t look unqualified.

It backfired.

Not immediately, but eventually. Because confident guesses create confident mistakes — and confident mistakes destroy trust faster than simply admitting you’re unsure.

As I grew in the industry, something shifted. I learned more, of course, but I also became more secure in the value I did bring. And with that came the realization that I don’t need to know everything. Nobody does. Expertise isn’t about omniscience. It’s about judgment.

Today, if a client asks a question I don’t know the answer to, I say exactly that.
“You know what… I’m not sure. Let me dig into it or pull in someone who knows this better than I do.”

Funny enough, that honesty builds far more trust than pretending ever did.

The Dunning-Kruger effect is real. The loudest, most confident voices are often the ones with the shallowest understanding. The people who truly know their craft are usually the first to admit how much more there is to learn.

Admitting what you don’t know isn’t a weakness. It’s the moment trust actually begins.

 ✅ Test relentlessly: messaging, targeting, creative, landing pages, offers.
 ✅ Give the platform options so it has data to learn from. Performance gets better with reps.
 ✅ Scale the winners with confidence.
 ✅ Pause losers, figure out why they lost, and line up the next test.

There is no finish line in this game.

Every day, your competitors are trying new offers, new landing pages, new creative. 

I have had brands tell me, “I don’t know why sales are down. We didn’t change anything from last year.”
That’s the problem. While you stayed still, they kept learning.

If you get complacent, CPAs go up, sales go down, and suddenly you are asking, “what happened?”
