Taking a lower role is not failure.

or end up waiting months for a job that fits your old title.

I get it, some of you might land the exact same role abroad.
You’re the minority, and that’s amazing.

For everyone else:

Don’t be ashamed.
Don’t compare.

Remember:
You didn’t downgrade your worth, you upgraded your resilience.
You took the first step that most people are too scared to take.
And trust me, your skills didn’t vanish just because your title changed.

Your new beginning just needs time to reveal who you’re becoming. 😊

You might think:

I’ve single-handedly delivered multiple million-dollar IT projects on time without compromising quality.
But the moment I switched from SDLC to the mining process, even simple tasks started making me feel like a complete beginner.

2. Map something from your past experience to your new industry so you don’t feel lost.
(eg: I compare mining processes to SDLC so my brain has something familiar to hold on to.)

3. Keep a career journal and write one daily sentence about what you learned or felt.
(eg: Today I realised I tried to learn the whole pump system without knowing the basics.)

4. Ask one clarifying question a day instead of overthinking things alone.
(eg: ‘Can you show me an example?’ instead of stressing for hours.)

Take the next 30 days to practice this identity shift, and you’ll rebuild the confidence you thought you lost,  this time, with even deeper self-awareness.

The more things change, the more they remain the same.
French writer Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr wrote this in 1849.

I wonder today if he was referring to people as well.

Because if he was, then Ankur Warikoo would fit the bill perfectly.

I happened to meet Ankur last week. After I met him in 2019.

6 years apart.

But, in the brief interaction that we had, I realised something.

He was 

Equally warm.
Equally inquisitive.
Equally inspirational.

As he had been in 2019.

In that year, he had probably just started down the content creation path. 

In these 6 years, as anyone would know, he has grown leaps and bounds.

When it comes to the professional world, no other creator in India even comes close.

But I was surprised and thrilled at the same time to note that he doesn’t seem to have changed.

If anything, he seems to have become more of a people person than he previously was.

And I truly meant it when I said this to him – 
You are truly an inspiration! Keep rocking!

Here's hoping to not have to wait another 6 years to meet him again :)

The 'HR in my HeaRt' Guy | HR Head @ Weber Shandwick | FOLLOW ME for amping up your career game

I am a firm proponent of the idea that one should let specialists do their job.

Something that has been beautifully demonstrated by my dear friend, Faaiz Gul.

Faaiz and I were colleagues at Wipro over a decade ago.
We were closely on Employee Branding initiatives to support our TA efforts.
He was a graphic designer on the team and a master of his craft.

It was evident to me in every interaction and every creative he churned out.

He listened to his stakeholders. 
Asked questions. 
Understood their requirement.
And came up with creatives that thrilled them.

It's no wonder he grew in his role so rapidly.

About 5 years ago, when I wanted to launch my personal brand, I could think of no one better to help me.

So, I picked up the phone and called him. 
Explained the thought behind it and the purpose.

Shared this simple text with him as I had conceptualized it - HRinmyHeaRt

I was hoping to receive it redesigned in a colourful, new-age font.

But a couple of days later, he shared a totally different version that blew me away.

It was love at first sight.

And only Faaiz could have done it.

Now you know why I believe experts should be allowed to do what they’re good at 😊

Today, he’s moved far beyond and is doing some exciting things.

As a content and learning specialist, he’s now focused on how AI and immersive technologies can make learning and communication more engaging and effective. 
 
My heart swells with pride to see him grow in this direction and shape the future of workplace learning and engagement.

What word would you use to describe someone like Ajay Jain?
Here’s what I would describe him as – 

In English, I’d call him a ‘maverick’, in the true sense of the word.
In Hindi, I’d refer to him as a ‘deewana’.

The reason’s quite simple.

Pray, tell me - Who in today’s world would take the risk of launching a brick-and-mortar bookstore?

In times when screens are crowding our print.
When online bookstores sell all books at 34% off? Throughout the year.

It can only be someone who actively challenges established beliefs, and is simply independent and unconventional.

And, that’s Ajay for you.

Though we’ve met a few times, I’ve controlled the urge to ask him this – 

Why and how did he muster the courage to launch the well-known ‘Kunzum’ book stores?

So, now that I’ve gotten a copy of his latest book, ‘Charlie’s Boys’, I’ll probably get an answer from within its pages.

A memoir of his school days and his growing-up years may give me a hint.
So, I’m genuinely excited about digging into it.

Most people will tell you that to get really good at something, learn all about it. 
They’re wrong.

What you really need to do is teach that skill or share that knowledge with others. 

In other words, TEACH! 

Why?
It’s simple – Teaching will force you to dig deeper when your students throw up questions that you don’t have answers for. 

You’ll be forced to spend more time on your craft. 

As you answer more of their queries and resolve their doubts, you will find your confidence increasing and your interest in the subject growing. 

Soon, you may reach that point where you’re considered the ‘Subject Matter Expert’ or authority on the subject. 

A point when people associate you with that skill or subject, and you’re the go-to person when they want clarity on that skill. 

For example, my good friend and LinkedIn guru, Sampark Sachdeva, who is an authority on personal branding & corporate sales trainings. 

On both these counts, he's the first name that crops up in everyone's heads when they are looking for some guidance. 

So, I reiterate – To get really good at something, move beyond learning. Teach.

Thanksgiving is an American tradition. 
So, why am I happy to celebrate it? 

It’s because I believe the good can be absorbed from any culture or community. 

And the celebration of Thanksgiving is an apt one to be copied. 

While it began as a celebration of the harvest, it has evolved. 

Today, it’s become a day to symbolise intercultural peace and the importance of family & loved ones.

Now and then, I come across very troubling news reports.

The ones I am referring to are about global icons (musicians, actors, businesspersons) being targeted by extortionists.

They are often linked to what we call the underworld in this country.

It feels so terrible that this is the price they have to pay for success.

To lose sleep over this looming threat.
To always have to watch your back.

I know this is an extreme case to illustrate this.

But the truth is that success always comes with a price.

It could be – 

Time
Stress
Failure
Sacrifice
Discomfort
Uncertainty

There are various other costs one must be prepared to pay to chase success.

The question is – 
How much are we willing to pay for our dreams?

This is the question that I was asked. It was by Neha jagnani, who was a great host for the Masterclass, that I took for the HR ASSOCIATION OF INDIA on ‘Campus to Corporate: The Mindset Shift That Matters’.

The truth is that as students move from campuses to corporates, they need to shift their mindset, as well.

This is true for professionals well, whenever they shift companies.

Should I join a large, established company or enter the start-up world?

What would I tell my younger self if asked this question?

Throughout my 20-year career, I have learnt a few valuable lessons.

I’ve learnt those through personal experiences.

In fact, I even tried launching my own venture.

So, now I am in a position to share the answer to that question with confidence.

Of course, I can’t turn back time.

But, what I can do is share this with some of you who can benefit from this advice.

Why this blank speech bubble, you ask?

Well, no surprises.
Last week, I wasn’t able to overhear anything during my metro commute.

Those of you who are regular here know that I share an overheard comment from my daily Metro travel here every Thursday.

But this Thursday, I don’t have anything to share.

Because, as you guessed it, most people are masked, and voices are muffled.

Because, yet again, the capital is suffering from mind-numbing pollution.

Because, as always, our policymakers don’t seem to care.

It’s been like this for a month now.

There’s been a lot of noise on social media.
Some in the traditional media too.
But, it all seems to be falling on deaf ears.

I am lucky, in a sense.
I have air purifiers at home.
At Weber Shandwick, we’ve installed air purifiers all across the office. 
Plus, we make special allowances by enabling more WFH when things get very bad.

But, I wonder – 
What about the thousands who are not so privileged?
 
What the powers that be need to realise is this – 
Good health is a core requirement for livelihood.

And, we don’t seem to be able to provide that even.
It’s truly tragic.
