Rhode's P&L dropped and everyone's drooling over it without understanding what they're looking at.

Elf paid $1B for 34% EBITDA margins.

Cool.  Hailey Bieber spent 11% on marketing because she IS the marketing.

But here's the part nobody wants to talk about: Rhode's G&A was 17%. That's... a lot.  Elf said they're cutting 5-7 points immediately.

Translation: Rhode might have been a lil' sloppy with ops (not abnormal), but they got away with it because free distribution (totally abnormal).

If you don't have a celebrity:  You need gross margins 5-10 points higher than Rhode's 81%.  You need G&A at 10-12%, not 17%.  And it'll take you 5-7 years to hit those numbers, not 2.5.

Stop benchmarking against outliers.

The real playbook? 

There isn't one.  It's custom based on your unit economics, budget and distribution reality. 

Anyone promising you a template is lying.

Rhode succeeded because they had Hailey.  Rare Beauty succeeded because they had Selena Gomez.  True, visionary founders who happen to have millions and millions of followers... But can you afford that luxury?
