It wasn’t a breach.
It wasn’t an incident.
It wasn’t a tool rollout or a long-awaited reorg.

The biggest unlock came from one cybersecurity leader who decided to show up differently.

Here’s what changed:

For 30 days, he practiced one simple habit:
→ Slow down before stepping in.

And as he did, he started noticing things he normally missed:

• Was I reacting, or actually leading?
• Did I explain the “why,” not just the “what”?
• Did I adjust to how others think, not just how I think?
• Did I move the work forward or just move it faster?

Not a checklist. A 30-day habit.

Here’s what shifted around him:

✅ Alignment happened early, instead of after the fact
✅ Fewer escalations, fewer interruptions

Why does this work?

In security, the real power move isn’t escalation.
It’s making the next step painless, so people want to say yes.

Stakeholders aren’t ignoring you on purpose.
Most are just overloaded and allergic to friction.

A technical leader I coached was known for execution.

🚩 And that was the problem. 🚩

He’d become essential for output, not for leadership.
People came to him for answers, not alignment.
He was solving problems, not shaping direction.

I’ve seen this pattern across the technical leaders I coach:
When their impact plateaus, it’s rarely a capability issue.
It’s an altitude issue.

So we focused on one habit over 30 days:
→ Set the altitude. Then lead from there.

That meant:
•Zooming out before weighing in
•Leading cross-functional conversations early, not reacting late
•Getting clear on the business priority before deciding on the team activity

He didn’t need more tools. He needed a shift in how he showed up.

And here’s what changed:
✅ Buy-in came faster
✅ Resistance dropped
✅ His own words: “Collaboration across peers got easier and faster.”

You could feel it, even if no one dared to say it.

One leader’s communication style had quietly reshaped how the whole security org operated.

High-performing leaders don’t stall because they’re unmotivated.
They stall because the system lets them stay siloed.

One org brought me in when it became clear:

“We’re not having the conversations we need to have.”

The issues weren’t obvious at first.
But under the surface?
 • Priorities kept misaligning
 • Decisions were getting reworked
 • And leaders were busy, not connected

So we tried something simple and different:

🟢 Each person chose one visible leadership behavior to practice
🟢 They got paired with a peer for accountability
🟢 They tracked their progress weekly, in real conversations, not hypotheticals

Here’s what happened:

✅ 70% made a clear commitment
✅ 100% with an accountability partner followed through
✅ Those who worked on “flexing” saw an 80% behavior shift

But what mattered most?

Their teams felt it.

labour day weekend. kids are set to go back to school. 

text from our landlords: 
"are you around to chat?"

f*ck.

wifey and i have been renting for over a decade. 
we knew what that meant.

no worries though. they were just listing the house, that didn't mean it would actually sell.

fast forward 2.5 months and we move out Saturday.

5 days on market. 
sold over ask. 
60 days to get out.

(still don't get how a single dude is given the same amount of notice when evicted as a family of four. wild.)

out of over 15 places we went to see, 
2 were in our price range.

both applications were rejected.

my parents offered their place.
"just a few months while you figure it out."

the voice in my head (whom i call Regina George) got real loud:

• they're offering out of obligation.
• your wife doesn't want to live with in-laws.
• you're 42. how are you moving back home?
• what if the kids break shit? what if the dog pisses somewhere?

so we kept searching.
kept applying.
kept getting rejected.

then i looked at wifey:

"i know this sounds silly but it feels like the universe is telling us to go be with my parents."

"i feel the same," she said.

when we stopped resisting, things got way less stressful:

• the kids get more time w/ nana + poppa
• we get rare time as adults w/ my aging parents
• the financial breathing room to find the RIGHT place
• my parents get to be needed (they f*cking love that)

when i read (heard) this line in The Surrender Experiment last week, i felt a crazy energy run throughout my entire body: 

"challenging situations create the force needed for change. the problem is - we (often) use that energy to resist change."

the Author, Michael Singer learned: 

"if i could handle the winds of the current storm, it would end up blowing in some great gift."

overthinking high-achievers: we're so busy performing "having it together" that sometimes we miss the gifts wrapped in the storm.

that thing stealing your sleep?
that "failure" you're hiding?

what if it's not happening TO you?
what if it's happening FOR you?

you'll never know unless you take a moment to stop, assess the chaos, and listen long enough for what the universe is trying to show you.

people with brilliant minds, massive hearts, and beautiful intentions for their work aren't able to fulfill their dreams in a system that:

• lets machines decide who's "worthy"
• doesn't have time for people-to-people interaction
• has a fiduciary responsibility to shareholders over humans

most of my clients are folks in their 40s, 50s, 60s.

PhDs. Olympians. Fortune 100 execs. Mensa-level geniuses.

20, 30, 40 years leading tech, media, and businesses that have changed how the world works.

on the surface? objectively successful.
but when they meet me? defeated.

laid off. passed over. made redundant. overlooked in rooms they can own.

they’ve been hunting for months - often years - for their next big opp.
only to be told their amazing career is actually a liability.

"i did everything i was supposed to."
one client told me:

i worked hard
i stayed humble
i didn't complain
i followed the rules
i became "one of the boys"
i fixed the messes others left
i came in early and stayed late
i got the "promo" without the raise
i watched less capable peers get projects i wanted

and through it all i stayed quiet.
i smiled when i wanted to cry.

telling myself they would see me,
when they never did.

for what?

the psychological damage of this conditioning runs deep. so here are the first 2 things i share with these folks:

1️⃣ your feelings are valid and make complete sense. i’m sorry.
2️⃣ your wild career feels all over the place and it's not. i promise.

when you look at the resume gaps and jumps in isolation, they seem random.
when you look at them together, they're connected by themes, patterns and throughlines that are impossible to see on your own.

(that's the work we do together)

you're not a one-dimensional person.
you don't have to pick one lane.

no one is better positioned for this next phase of work than you.

but to own that, you need to 

find the story in your work. 
find the language that feels like you 

so you can own it in any room without the fear someone’s gonna ask:
“so, what do you do?”

your wild career isn't a liability. it's truly your unfair advantage.
don’t give up. start using it.

you're way too smart to let some f*cking recruiter decide what's best for you.

i crushed the talk. but felt nothing. like watching someone else’s success through a window. 



last week i shared that 90% of women in a room of 100 raised their hands when i asked who felt like they didn’t belong.

today i'm still thinking about why.


"imposter syndrome" doesn't capture it. 
at least not for me.

i don't feel like an imposter. 
i know logically i'm “good at what i do”.

for me, it feels more like disconnect.

my brain can list the facts:

• brought value
• crushed the talk
• people connected
• asks to work together

but my body? feels nothing.


and if 90% of the women in that room of 'heavy hitters' (barf) raised their hands? 

this isn’t just a “me” problem of knowing my achievements but being unable to feel them.


so, here's what i'm #overthinkinginpublic today (maybe you can help me figure this out):


what if the way we're taught to “succeed” actually breaks our ability to experience it when we do?

think about it.

• every time we push through exhaustion for a deadline
• every time we smile in meetings when we want to scream
• every time we ignore our gut to be "professional"

we’re doing what i call “performing professionalism” 


teaching our nervous system its signals don't matter.

teaching ourselves that success means overriding what we feel.

that to “win” we need to disconnect from ourselves.



so when we "make it" - we literally can't feel it. because we've trained ourselves out of it.


i don’t have any answers yet 
but naming it feels like the first step

and i can’t ignore the pattern.


if 90% of a room of ridiculously accomplished women feel like they don’t belong… 

that's not individual failure.
that's something bigger.

and if we wanna fix it… we’re gonna have to admit it’s a big f*cking problem in the first place.

• fav thing…hearing words like “diorama” in rap songs
• how did Sharpies corner the permanent marker market?
• they created silencers for hand guns…why the f*ck did they leave out tape guns?
• can someone explain what made clams the universal standard for real happiness?
• if you have the courage to throw out the spare parts at the end of an IKEA build, i want to hire you
• we've disrupted whole ass industries like taxis and food delivery but no one can disrupt the umbrella?
• sign of someone who isn’t funny? they remember their past jokes and consistently remind you of them
• i’m not killing my plants...i’m making them better plants by pushing their bodies beyond what they thought was possible
• my Mom bites her nails, i bite my nails, my 6 year old bites her nails. some shit is just nurture. you think your shame is gonna make me stop?

• Pamela Anderson might be the best comeback story since the QR code
• “this is our daughter, Dottie, and this is our other daughter…Dottie’s sister”
• why are ears and noses the only things on our bodies that continue to grow as we age?
• if an item you washed is damp but you really want to wear it, do you put it on anyways? (i 100% do)
• i’m still working on a definition of peri-menopause but so far I’ve got: 3 days of existential crises monthly
• is my house actually a disaster or is it just a disaster compared to the house i grew up in (where you only played in your room and basement)?
• 🎵doooooo yooouurrr ears hang low. do they wobble to and frow. can you tie them in a knot. can you tie them in a bow. 🎵

i've spent 30 years trying to fix myself but i was never broken. too bad my nervous system didn't know that.


something we rarely talk about:

overthinking high-achievers have spent their lives performing "normal"
because our nervous systems learned early that being our full self wasn't welcomed.

wasn't safe.

we were trained to:
• "tone it down"
• chill our intensity
• not be "so dramatic"

basically...be more palatable
and put other's comfort before our own.

so it makes perfect sense then that 
when you go to be your "authentic self" online
your nervous system freezes.

it's trying to warn you.

(remember what happened last time you were yourself? when you made other people uncomfortable?)

i know this shit firsthand.

i was that "dumb", "painfully shy", and "sick" kid.
had a psychiatrist by 12 and wore so many labels, i lost count:

speech impediment
learning disability
childhood trauma
depression
bulimia
anxiety
ADHD
OCD

so my nervous system learned early:
being myself = not safe.

hide the ADHD.
mask the anxiety.
perform being "normal."

and for a long time i thought there was no way in hell i could be any other way. 

but by building a brand and business online through StoryEQ™ - i proved myself wrong. 

it didn't happen overnight. it's taken years.
and my greatest setback still remains:

the fear of success, not of failure.

because succeeding at the level i want to succeed...

learning how to regain my self-trust publicly, 
so i can then help others do the same...

means i'm gonna catch A LOT of shit.
and a lot of people aren't gonna like me.

i worry constantly whether i've got the emotional capacity to deal with trolls.
(even thinking about that makes me want to puke).

but by refusing to give in. 
i taught my nervous system to give up
(on this warning at least)

one terrifying moment at a time.

so today remember...

the people that can't handle ALL of you?
they're not your people.

and the ones who need your full, "too much" self?
they've been waiting for you to finally show up.

• helping my first grader with her homework is low-key the best confidence boost
• my 6 y/o started adding CTAs to the end of the stories she writes - and wow am I proud
• if you dare to say “quid pro quo” to me seriously, you grant me permission to slap you in the face
• i can’t fathom the brain space I’d have if it wasn’t full of every 90s R&B and Hip Hop lyric i’ve ever heard 
• curse the man (yeah I said it) who arbitrarily decided what “room temperature” was for all people, everywhere
• shout out to my new “age award”…lip wrinkles. nothing like seeing your grandma every time you look in the mirror

Simon Sinek was only half right.


"Start with Why" changed how we think about business.

but it created a generation of coaches obsessed with their mission while their audience scrolls past thinking "who gives a f*ck?"

here's the half Simon missed:

knowing your why means f*ck all if you don't know how to make others care about it.

i see it all the time. 

everyone's obsessed with their mission. their "why."

they pour hours into perfecting every word.
they do 100s of exercises to find it.
(i think i've done no less than 1000 of these)

meanwhile, their audience scrolls past their posts thinking "who gives a f*ck?"

find your why. absolutely.
uncover your story. 100%.
but your work doesn't end there.

next, you need to ask yourself this question:

"how does my audience need to hear and experience my why, my mission, my work in order for it to 1) resonate deeply 2) know i'm the PERFECT person to help them with their problems."

this is what it looks like in my 4 Stories Framework
(geek mode, activated)

STORY #1: CURRENT
what others say about you (perception) 
the story that exists when you leave the room

STORY #2: OLD
what you tell yourself (protection) 
the bullsh*t story running on repeat in your head

STORY #3: BRIDGE
what story you decide to share (discernment) 
when you take ownership of what you put out there
(hint: you don't need to share all of it!)

STORY #4: NEW
what actually connects & converts (trust) 
the story that makes people pull out their credit card

most of us obsess over story #3. 
perfecting. polishing. performing.

but your audience buys from story #4.

the gap between those two? 
that's where your business will die.

we're taught that content is about the creator. 
your vision. your message. your impact.

bullsh*t.

if you want your work to reach people, it needs to serve the audience.

start with why? sure.
but end with "who gives a sh*t.

my 6 y/o discovered the $6.2 million banana. what i realized next won't leave my brain.

she doesn't overthink.


my daughter is an Artist. 
she started claiming that label at 3. 
 
wifey and i encourage it. 

i'm an Artist, 
but couldn't claim it until my late 30s. 

last week she burst through the door after school:
"Mommy, this guy's art was taping a banana to a wall!"

i said, "wild right, it's called 'Comedian.'"

her eyes went huge. "you KNOW that story?!"

and we were off. 
(i'd bet my right arm she has my brain)

30 minutes deep diving into Maurizio Cattelan. 
the concept. the sales. the controversy.

about 15 mins in, she grabbed my sharpie.

didn't ask permission.
didn't worry about getting it wrong.
didn't wonder if she was artistic enough.

just...started drawing.

couple minutes later (with some spelling help from me) her interpretation was done. 

it was like i got to watch myself create before the world got to me.

before i worried "what will they think?"
before i wondered "am i qualified?"
before i felt wrong claiming Artist. 

she wanted to make something. so she did.

no overthinking to the point of paralysis.
no overriding voice in her head.
no second guessing.

just: idea → action.

this is what we lose, isn't it?

not our creativity.
not our ability.
not our ideas.

we lose the permission to just do.

overthinking high-achievers get this. 

1000s of ideas sitting in your notes app.
frameworks dying in your Notion instance.
stories you're "perfecting" instead of posting.

maybe it's time to pick up the sharpie again.

stop asking if you're ready.
stop waiting for permission.
stop overthinking it without action.

your 6-year-old self would've just done it by now.
