The biggest unlock came from one cybersecurity leader who decided to show up differently.

Here’s what changed:

For 30 days, he practiced one simple habit:
→ Slow down before stepping in.

And as he did, he started noticing things he normally missed:

• Was I reacting, or actually leading?
• Did I explain the “why,” not just the “what”?
• Did I adjust to how others think, not just how I think?

I’ve seen this pattern across the technical leaders I coach:
When their impact plateaus, it’s rarely a capability issue.
It’s an altitude issue.

So we focused on one habit over 30 days:
→ Set the altitude. Then lead from there.

That meant:
•Zooming out before weighing in
•Leading cross-functional conversations early, not reacting late
•Getting clear on the business priority before deciding on the team activity

He didn’t need more tools. He needed a shift in how he showed up.

And here’s what changed:
✅ Buy-in came faster
✅ Resistance dropped

You could feel it, even if no one dared to say it.

One leader’s communication style had quietly reshaped how the whole security org operated.

The issues weren’t obvious at first.
But under the surface?
 • Priorities kept misaligning
 • Decisions were getting reworked
 • And leaders were busy, not connected

So we tried something simple and different:

🟢 Each person chose one visible leadership behavior to practice
🟢 They got paired with a peer for accountability
🟢 They tracked their progress weekly, in real conversations, not hypotheticals

Here’s what happened:

I stopped a woman in the Indianapolis airport last month because I had to tell her she was wearing the coolest f**king blazer I’ve ever seen on a woman.
 
Turns out, it was a custom piece from Midnight Oil clothiers in Denver, and she’s friends with the owner, Rachel Lefort.

We had a quick Zoom call a few days before I headed to D.C. to give a keynote at Amy Sterner Nelson’s event, The Gathering.
 
And I still hadn’t planned my outfit… yikes.

This whiteboard changed my life.
 
Four years ago, I started working on my next career move. I grabbed a marker and wrote down everything I wanted my next company to become. You can see it in this photo - messy handwriting, profound vision, and "bathroom remodel" sitting right under the "practice gratitude."
 
Real life. Real dreams. All mixed together.
 
What I wrote: 

→ "I love helping people get what they want. I love helping good people get to where they want to be by exploiting the right levers" 

→ "By choosing to use time - the only nonrenewable resource - wisely"
 
→ "I love thinking about how to think and thinking about how to make the right decision every time" 

→ "I love thinking about practicing gratitude, humility, patience, kindness, forgiveness, joy"
 
And right in the middle, a quote that became my north star: "Whether you think you can or you can't, you're right."

That quote proved itself right. I thought I could build this. So I did.

Sharing this feels slightly cringey - but I'm really proud of myself.

𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 “𝗺𝗮𝘆𝗯𝗲.”  

𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲.
 
You know that stage where every deal feels close, but somehow never actually closes?
 
Most founders know that place well.  
It is draining in a way that sneaks up on you.
 
You start explaining things over and over.  You follow up more than feels good.  You try so hard to help someone get to clarity that you lose your own.
 
I have been there too.  I used to think giving more touches meant giving more care.  But all it really gave me was noise and second guessing.
 
Here is what I've found to be true:
 
➡️ You cannot talk someone into clarity. They have to feel it.  
➡️ Your sales flow needs to support both of you, not confuse either of you.  
➡️ Your nurture should build belief without you living in your inbox.  
➡️ And your proposals should feel calm and confident, not like you are chasing someone.
 
That is all a “system” really is.
 
Not tech. Not fancy tools.  Just a steady way of guiding people from interest to confidence to commitment.
 
Because confidence is what closes deals.  And people feel it the moment they step into your process.
 
So if you feel like you are carrying your leads instead of walking with them, take a breath and ask yourself:

𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁. 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗬𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴.
 
I had a powerful conversation with Lani Jones, PsyD, HSPP, SHRM-CP  on the latest podcast, and she shared a perspective every founder needs to hear.
 
She reminded me that it is completely normal to step into roles before you have every skill you need to excel.  In fact, that is often the only way we grow.
 
But so many founders avoid those stretch moments because they do not want to feel imposter syndrome.  They stay in the work that feels safe and familiar.  They avoid the rooms where their gaps might show.
 
And that choice has a cost.  The business feels heavier than it should.  The team leans too hard on them.  Revenue plateaus.
 
Every meaningful leap in my own career has happened right after I walked into something I did not feel fully ready for. The discomfort was not a threat. It was an invitation.
 
Your skill gaps are not signs you are in the wrong place.  They are signs you are growing into the next version of yourself.
