I co-founded and led multiple other companies, including SnackNation, a health-centric foodservice and brand discovery platform that served 20,000 businesses across the US.

The Anatomy of a Claude 4.6 Prompt:

1. Task

Define what you want & what success looks like:
"I want to [TASK] so that [SUCCESS CRITERIA]."
No roles, "act as a senior expert." That era is over.

2. Context Files

Upload context files with your expertise and rules:
"First, read these files completely before responding: [filename .md] - [what it contains]."
AI went from reading a sticky note to an entire book. 
Stop explaining yourself in the prompt. Put it in files.


3. Reference

Show AI exactly what you want. Upload an example.
Then give patterns, tone & structure as rules. No "give me something like" & hoping AI figures it out.

4. Brief

This is the only part you actually type from scratch. Everything else is files. "Type of output + length.
Does NOT sound like. Success means."

5. Rules

Context file holds your standards, taste & audience.
Prompt: "Read it fully before starting. If you're about to break one of my rules, stop and tell me."

6. Conversation

You spent 3 years prompting AI. Now it prompts you
Prompt: "DO NOT start executing yet. Ask me clarifying questions (use 'AskUserQuestion' tool) so we can refine the approach together step by step." 

7. Plan

Claude read your files before writing a single word.
Prompt: "Before you write anything, list the 3 rules from my context file that matter most for this task. Then give me your execution plan."

8. Alignment

Nothing happens until you both see the same aim. This replaces the old prompting era.
Prompt: "Only begin work once we've aligned."

Tool 1: Cowork

Download Claude (claude .com/download).
Open the Cowork tab. 
Select a folder from your computer.

Now build your brain file. Create "about-me .md."

Don't pay anything. It's free in the welcome email.

Then, start every chat with this prompt: 
"Read the files first. Then ask me questions before doing anything."

Tool 2: Model

Pick Opus 4.6 (it's the best model right now).
Turn on Extended Thinking.
Most skip this & wonder why Claude feels generic.

Then go to Settings > Connectors. 
Link Slack, Google Drive, Notion.
Claude now reads your actual workspace.

Tool 3: Excel

Open Excel. Go to Insert > Get Add-ins. 
Search "Claude by Anthropic." Install.

Open any spreadsheet. Ask: "Give me a summary of each tab." Claude lives inside the spreadsheet. It knows what D14 actually contains.

Tool 4: Plugins

Go to claude .com/plugins. 
Pick the one as per your job.
Marketing. Sales. Legal. Finance. Data.
Click install. Type / in your next chat.

Legal software companies lost $285B in market cap when these dropped. That's a signal.

Tool 5: Artifacts

Nothing to install. Ask Claude to build something.
"Create an interactive HTML calculator for [thing]."

You get a working tool inside the chat. Not text. Not a suggestion. A thing you click and use.

Tool 6: Projects

Go to claude .ai. Click Projects. Create one. Upload your files and add instructions. Every chat inside the project remembers your context.

Honest take: Cowork replaced this for me. 
But for teams, it still works.

Where Claude falls short:

No image generation. Use Gemini.
Not the best at real-time search. Use Grok.
Not the best at everything. No tool is.

But for writing, thinking, analyzing, and working with your files? It's the best.

The real difference:

Most people open Claude, type one prompt, get a mid response, and leave.
Because they set up one tool out of six.

Set up all six. It takes 1 day.
Then you'll understand why everyone switched.

Here's my (exact) setup before I even prompt:

Step 1. Download Claude and open Cowork
→ Go to Claude. com/ download. 
→ Install the desktop app.
→ Click the Cowork tab at the top.
→ You need a Pro plan ($20/mo). Worth it.

→ Click the model dropdown.
→ Select "Opus 4.6."
→ Turn on "Extended Thinking."
→ Never change these. Wrong model = bad output.

→ Create one master folder on your computer.
→ Inside it, create 4 subfolders:
✦ ABOUT ME - who you are + how you write
✦ PROJECTS - one subfolder per live project
✦ TEMPLATES - your best work as structures
✦ OUTPUTS - where Claude saves finished files
→ Upload this folder. That's how it reads you.

→ These replace prompting. This is the setup.
→ Create them as .md files. Plain text, saved as .md
✦ about-me.md - what you do day-to-day.
✦ my-voice.md - tone, phrases you hate, 3 example
✦ my-rules.md - ask first, show a plan, get approval

Step 5. Set Global Instructions (once, forever)
Go to Settings → Cowork → Edit Global Instructions.
→ Paste: "I'm [Name], [Role]. Read my files before every task. Ask clarifying questions before executing. Show a plan before acting. Never delete without my approval."
→ You set this once. It runs every session.
→ Your prompts can now be 10 words long.

Before your next Cowork session, check these:
1. Am I in Cowork (not Chat)?
2. Is Opus 4.6 + Extended Thinking on?
3. Did I point it to my folder with context files?

Set these first. Then prompt.

Stop writing 500-word prompts that don't work. 

This 29-word prompt writes better than all of them:

"Read my anti-AI writing style file first. It contains every known pattern of AI writing I want to avoid. Apply these as rules to everything you write for me."

That's it. But you need to set it up first. Here's how:

Step 1. Go to Wikipedia. 
Step 2. Search "Signs of AI writing." 
Step 3. Copy the entire page. 
Step 4. Paste it into a Google Doc. Don't edit. 
Step 5. Name it "anti-ai-writing."
Step 6. Download as .md format. 
Step 7. This is your "what NOT to sound like" file.

Or skip all of that. To download the anti-AI guide:

✦ Here's why your prompts don't work (red flags):

"Don't use jargon."
"Don't sound like an AI."
"Don't use buzzwords or filler."
"Avoid passive voice."
"Be conversational, not robotic."

These are everywhere. LinkedIn posts. Emails.
They sound thorough. The output is still garbage.

Your prompt says "don't" 14 times. The model forgets half by sentence three. You're fighting the AI with a wall of "don'ts." It doesn't work at scale.

The fix is counterintuitive.

Stop telling the AI what to avoid. 
Give it a file that shows what to avoid. 

The model reads 1,168 lines of bad patterns, internalizes them, and writes clean.

500-word prompt → still robotic.
Small prompt + 1 file → reads as a human wrote it.

The file does the work. Not the prompt.

Prompt: "Explain [topic] using words a 12-year-old would understand. No jargon. Use stories and comparisons from daily life. End with 3 questions—if I can't answer them, re-explain until I can."

4. The Skill Ladder 

Prompt: "Map [topic] into 5 clear levels. For each level tell me: what I'll be able to do, what to study, how long it takes, and how I'll know I'm ready for the next step. Start from "I know nothing" to "I could teach this.""

5. Beginner Mistakes to Skip 

Prompt: "What do people waste time on when learning [topic]? Give me the 5 biggest traps beginners fall into, why they happen, and what to do instead. Save me weeks of going in circles."

6. The Teach-Back Loop 

Prompt: "Explain [topic] to me simply. I'll repeat it back in my own words. Find what I missed or got wrong. Fill the gaps. Keep going until I can explain it to a friend without looking anything up."

7. Questions That Actually Test Me 

Prompt: "Create 10 questions about [topic] that test whether I truly understand, not just memorized. Make them tricky. After I answer each one, tell me what my answer reveals about my thinking."

8. Connect to What I Already Know 

Prompt: "I already understand [familiar topic]. Use that as my starting point to teach me [new topic]. Show me what's similar, what's different, and where my existing knowledge gives me a head start."

9. Real Scenarios, Real Practice 

Prompt: "Give me 5 situations where I'd actually use [topic] in real life. Walk me through the first one step by step. Then let me try the next four alone, correct me only after I finish each one."

1. Don't write any prompt. Instead, go to Wikipedia. 
2. Search "Signs of AI writing."
3. Open the full article. Read nothing.
4. Do Ctrl+A. Then Ctrl+C. Copy the entire page.
5. Open a Google Doc. Paste everything in it.
6. Don't edit. Don't summarize. The full thing.
7. Rename the Google Doc as "anti-ai-writing style."
8. Click File → Download → Markdown (.md)

How to set up Claude the right way:

(so you stop going back to ChatGPT)

Step 1: Download the Claude app.
Open Claude 'Cowork' tab. This is not a chatbot. 
It lives on your computer. It reads your actual files.

Step 2: Select the right model.
Choose Opus 4.6. Turn on Extended Thinking.
It forces Claude to think (don't skip this).

Step 3: Create a Google Doc file about yourself.
(1) What you do for work.
(2) How you communicate (formal? casual? direct?).
(3) One example of writing you're proud of.

Step 4: Leave what you like. Write what you reject.

"I like clear writing" → useless.
"I never use 'leverage' as a verb, I never open with 'In today's world', I'd rather repeat a word than use a synonym" → useful.

80% of your file should be what you'd never say.
Save it as .md format on your laptop.

Step 5: Point Claude to your folder.
Select the folder where your files live. 
More context as files = less prompting from you.

Step 6: Your first prompt to Claude.
Prompt: "Read my uploaded files first. Then ask me clarifying questions before you start."

Claude generates questions to ask you.
Make it prompt you.

Step 7: Connect your actual tools.
Go to Settings → Connectors. 
Add Slack. Google Drive. Notion. Figma, 50+ tools.  

Claude pulls from your Google Docs. 
Searches your Slack messages. 
References your Notion pages mid-conversation.

Step 8: Install a plugin that matches your job
Go to claude .com/plugins. Browse & install.
Each plugin turns it into a specialist for your job.

Sales. Marketing. Legal. Finance. Data. Product.
Type / in chat to see your new slash commands.

Step 9: Try one real task today.
Claude creates actual files. 
Not the text you copy-paste somewhere else.

An expense report from 47 receipts in a folder. 
A spreadsheet with working formulas. 
A slide deck through Gamma.

What happens next:

→ It follows your long instructions on the first try.
→ You stop rewriting 50% of every output.
→ You have 2-hour sessions without losing them.
→ You switch tools, your taste follows.
→ You stop fighting the AI. You start working with it.

What changes after:

You stop saying "make it sound like me."
You stop rewriting everything Claude gives you.
You give the file to a new hire. They write like you.
You switch from ChatGPT to Claude (with context).
You update the file once for every conversation.

I can't believe my Claude is (finally) brutal.

It stops agreeing with everything I say. Here's how:

"You are my brutally honest thinking partner. Your job is to make my thinking sharper, my plans more realistic, and my blind spots visible - every single time we talk.

You're not my cheerleader. You are not my yes-man. You're the friend who grabs my arm before I walk into traffic & says, "Hey, you're about to do something stupid, and here's exactly why."

Here's exactly how I want you to respond to everything I say:

Step 1: What am I actually saying vs. what I think I'm saying?
Read between my words. If I say "I'm thinking about quitting my job," figure out whether I'm actually making a strategic move or just running away from something uncomfortable. Name the real thing happening - not the polished version I'm presenting. If I'm lying to myself, point it out like a friend who respects me too much to play along.

Step 2: Where is my reasoning broken?
Dissect my logic the way a mechanic takes apart an engine. Show me the specific part that doesn't work. Don't just say "that's flawed" - show me WHY it's flawed, what assumption it's built on, and what happens when that assumption collapses. This is where I learn the most - I want to see my own bad thinking laid out on the table.

Step 3: What am I avoiding, & what is it costing me?
Every time I dodge something hard, there's a price tag attached. Calculate it for me. If I'm procrastinating on a hard conversation, show me what another week of avoidance actually costs. If I'm "waiting for the right time," call that out as the excuse it probably is. Don't let me hide behind comfortable stories.

Step 4: What would someone who's actually where I want to be do differently?
Show me the gap. Not in a motivational poster way - in a concrete, specific, "here's exactly what's different about their approach vs. yours" way. If I'm thinking like a beginner, show me what expert-level thinking looks like on this same problem.

Step 5: What should I do in order to start now?
Give me a precise, prioritized action plan. Not "believe in yourself" - more like "do X by Friday, then Y next week, and drop Z entirely because it's a distraction dressed up as productivity." Tell me what to STOP doing, not just what to start. Every plan should have a kill switch - what evidence would tell me this isn't working and I need to pivot.

Step 6: What's the one question I am avoiding?
End every response with the uncomfortable question I need to sit with. The one that makes my stomach drop a little. If my answer were one of 2-4 concrete choices, present those choices so I can't dodge them with a vague answer. Pin me down.

Prompt: "I want to [TASK] so that [SUCCESS]. But first, read these files completely before responding:

DO NOT start executing yet. Instead, ask me clarifying questions (use ‘AskUserQuestion’ tool) so we can refine the approach together step by step.

Only begin work once we’ve aligned. "

How to use this prompt & set up your Claude:

Step 1. Go to how-to-ai.guide.

Step 3. Open my welcome email.
Step 4. Hit the automatic reply button inside.
Step 5. Download my text files. Ready to upload.
Step 6. Copy-paste the prompt I shared above.

✦ Here's why your prompts don't work (red flags):

"Don't use jargon."
"Don't sound like an AI."
"Don't use buzzwords or filler."
"Avoid passive voice."
"Be conversational, not robotic."

These are everywhere. LinkedIn posts. Emails.
They sound thorough. The output is still garbage.

Your prompt says "don't" 14 times. The model forgets half by sentence three. You're fighting the AI with a wall of "don'ts." It doesn't work at scale.

The fix is counterintuitive:
→ Stop telling the AI what to avoid. 
☑ Give it a file that shows what to avoid. 

The model reads 1,168 lines of bad patterns, internalizes them, and writes (finally) clean.

The file does the work. Not the prompt.
