In 2018, I made a big decision. After 16 + years in financial planning, I decided it was time for a change - not because I had the next big thing lined up, but because I felt a deeper calling. 

I wanted to create something that was truly mine, something that could make a real difference. 

So, I sold my financial planning business and took a leap into the unknown.

My journey began with a podcast. The goal? To inspire and educate, to touch lives in a meaningful way. It was a new chapter, one that brought me to LinkedIn to share my thoughts and connect with others. Little did I know, a simple video post in April 2018 would turn everything upside down. 

Suddenly, companies big and small were reaching out, drawn to the unique blend of my corporate background and this fresh, authentic approach I was taking on LinkedIn.

It was a lightbulb moment. The corporate world was hungry for genuine connection, for personal branding that resonated on a human level. 

So, I founded a new venture focused on just that. Helping leaders and entrepreneurs across the globe build powerful personal brands on LinkedIn became my new mission.

Fast forward to today, I've had the privilege of hosting the most successful entrepreneurs on my podcast, speaking at events worldwide, and most importantly, guiding others to find their purpose and voice online.

The internet is gaslighting people into thinking their career isn't valuable.

Because we've started using visibility as proof of value.

Big following? Must be successful.
Viral post? Must be credible.

And behind the screens, good people with solid careers start doubting work that already feeds families, builds companies, and solves real problems.

I had a conversation with someone recently.

He kept saying he wanted to "be the person" people ask for advice.
To solve problems.
To be known for something.

Meanwhile… he already is all of those things.

He builds systems.
That's how his brain works.
That's why he's highly paid.
That's why people rely on him.

But social media had him thinking he needed to change paths.
That his work isn't good enough.
That it isn’t visible enough.
That he should do what everyone else is doing.

And I said to him:

"Why are you trying to abandon the thing you're already great at… just because it's not currently glorified in the way you want it to?"

Of course, change careers if you genuinely want to.
But don't do it because social media keeps elevating the same visible paths:
Coaching. Podcasting. Quote graphics. Lifestyle content.

Some of the most valuable work in the world is quiet.
And a lot of "visible success" isn't even real.

Sometimes we don't need a new identity.
We need a clearer relationship with our own value.

You’ve Never Actually Seen Yourself
In fact, no one has ever looked themselves directly in the eye.

Not once.

You’ve only seen reflections.

Mirrors.

Feedback.

Labels.

Expectations.

Algorithms.

AND MOST REFLECTIONS OF YOU HAVE BEEN DISTORTED.

Some make you feel bigger than you are.
Some smaller.

Some make you believe you’re “too much.”
Others convince you you’re “not enough.”
Over time, you stop asking who you are…
And start assembling who you think you need to be.

That’s how people end up successful but, tragically, hollow.
Busy but misaligned.

Productive but lost.

CLARITY DOESN’T COME FROM ADDING MORE.

It comes from removing what doesn’t belong.

Like Michelangelo said when asked how he carved David:

I grew up an only child with a father who loved me… but was tragically abusive.

I learned early how dangerous words could be.

So I hid—in my bedroom with my television—trying to drown out voices that could have destroyed me.

That’s where I found refuge and inspiration.

GREAT STORYTELLING.

Without knowing it, I was learning how stories heal, how they give meaning, how they help us survive.

That skill shaped everything.

For decades, I built a career in television and entertainment—directing global artists like Gwen Stefani, the Black Eyed Peas, and Maroon 5, while collaborating with iconic leaders such as Barbara Corcoran, the President of the United States, and the creative minds behind Survivor, The VOICE, and Marvel Studios—all at the highest levels of media and brand storytelling.

Eventually, that work led to founding Spirit Media, where we help startups, nonprofits, and Fortune 500 companies generate extraordinary growth—sometimes in the billions.

From the outside, things looked very successful.

But I was genuinely struggling because my “success” turned me into an absentee father and husband.

Then everything changed.

I DIED.

Literally.

That death experience didn’t just give me a second chance at life—it completely rewired how I define success, leadership, and purpose.

When I came back, I was left with one unavoidable question:

If I’ve been given more time… what am I supposed to do with it?

That question became my assignment—and it reshaped everything that followed.

MAKING A TON OF MONEY WILL BRING ME FULFILLMENT.

Not exactly. 

Confession time.

After I died, I went deep into studying purpose, mission, happiness, and fulfillment.

Here’s what surprised me:

People with money are often happier.

Security matters.

Autonomy matters.

Options matter.

Money reduces stress and increases choice, and that absolutely affects happiness.

But here’s the distinction most people miss:

Happiness and fulfillment are not the same thing.

Happiness is like a thrilling ride at an amusement park.

It’s fun. It makes you laugh.

But when the ride stops, you’re standing in the same place you started.
Fulfillment is different.

Fulfillment is a deep, steady joy.

Not a dopamine hit, but a sense of purpose and meaning that carries you through both the highs and the lows.

One of the clearest ways to see the difference is what I call the Eulogy Test.

When you leave this world, what will people talk about?

Your balance sheet?

Your tax bracket?

Your résumé?

Or the lives you impacted?

The relationships you honored?

The way people felt because you were in their life?

We’re all investing every day.

The real question is which account are you building?

You can be a millionaire or a billionaire and still live a life marked by sacrificed relationships in pursuit of trophies and titles.

You’ll get plenty of dopamine-fueled happiness along the way.

But no gravestone is big enough to compensate for a transactional life.

So let me ask you:

Have you traded fulfillment for happiness?

WHAT’S THE POINT OF A POWERFUL MESSAGE…IF NO ONE ACTUALLY HEARS IT?

One of the biggest lessons I learned in television—and now teach my clients—is this:

🎬 Impact isn’t about what you say.

🎬 Impact isn’t about how loud you say it.

🎬 Impact isn’t about how long you talk.

Impact is about whether your message is received, understood, and moves someone forward.

IF YOUR MESSAGE DOESN’T LAND, IT SHOULDN’T LEAD.

So before you post, pitch, or present—run your message through this simple test:

❤️ Is it empathetic enough to be felt?

❤️ Is it clear enough to be understood?

❤️ Does it compel people to take positive action?

Because clarity isn’t a “nice to have.”

Clarity is what turns words into momentum.
