The Leadership Skill We Don’t Talk About Enough: Emotional Regulation

After joining a new organization as a mid-level leader, I looked forward to my first leadership meeting led by the division’s senior leader.

A few minutes in, as departments reviewed their scorecards, a key metric surfaced that had missed its target. The leader became visibly angry, demanding immediate answers. Unsatisfied with the response, and the silence that followed, the leader dictated what actions would be taken.

Leadership used to be defined by decisiveness and authority.

Today? It’s defined by how leaders respond to difficulties.

In uncertain environments, your nervous system sets the tone for the room. When pressure rises, your team is watching:
- How do you respond to setbacks?
- How do you handle tension?
- Do you escalate… or stabilize?

Emotional regulation isn’t softness. It’s strength.

It’s the discipline to pause before reacting. To choose curiosity over defensiveness. To separate urgency from anxiety.

Your credibility as a leader is built in those micro-moments.

This week, notice your triggers. When pressure spikes, practice a 10-second pause before responding. That pause might be your most strategic move.

Quiet Courage: The Leadership Strength That Shapes Culture

When I worked in the pharmaceutical space, our CEO was an uncharacteristically quiet leader.

He was naturally curious. He regularly asked for feedback. In meetings, he engaged others first, asking thoughtful questions and considering his team’s perspectives before moving toward a decision.

He never avoided tough calls. And when challenged, he didn’t raise his voice or posture for authority. He quietly and firmly held his ground.

That experience reshaped how I think about courage in leadership.
Courage isn’t loud. It’s consistent.

It looks like:
- Naming the tension in the room
- Giving honest feedback early
- Holding boundaries when it’s uncomfortable
- Making values-based decisions under pressure

The leaders who build strong cultures aren’t always the most charismatic in the room. They’re the most steady. The most grounded. The most consistent.

This resonates deeply. As a leader, I learned that psychological safety isn’t built through intention or eloquent words, it’s built in the moment truth shows up uninvited. If honesty is punished, trust disappears.

I’ve also learned not to ask for feedback unless I’m truly ready to receive it. And when it comes unexpectedly, the most powerful first response is simple: “Thank you.” Not defensiveness. Not justification. Just appreciation.

Most leaders say they want honesty and the truth.

They don’t.

I’ve seen this more times than I care to remember over my career.

💡 Silence is not alignment. It’s risk management.

💡 It’s expensive.

Most organisations built on unspoken truth don’t fail loudly:

⚠️ They drift.
⚠️ They decay.
⚠️ They get surprised.

Let’s be honest.

💡 You don’t get the culture you announce.

💡 You get the culture you emotionally reward.

The culture you build is a performance strategy. Make sure you build the right one.

💡 Don’t punish people for being brave enough to give you the truth.

So here’s the real question:

When someone last disagreed with you publicly:
