The best career coaches aren't better listeners. They're better watchers.

We get trained to listen. 
Ask open-ended questions. 
Reflect back what we hear.

These are necessary and valuable coaching skills. But without considering the full picture, you risk getting a rehearsed version of what's going on.

The real story is often the one playing out in their body, their voice, their timing.

Everything happening AROUND the words.

Last month I was working with a coach who kept laughing every time I asked a hard question. The kind of laugh that says, "I'm uncomfortable sitting in discomfort."

She didn't know she was doing it. 
Most people don't.

But that laugh told me where the real conversation needed to go.

That's the skill most coaches are undertrained in. 

Not listening.
Observing.

Your client says they're excited about a new role. Does their posture say the same? Is their eye contact different? Are their arms crossed, shoulders up near their ears?

A client tells you they have a great relationship with their manager. But their voice drops. The pacing slows. There's a pause that lasts half a beat too long.

Someone says they don't care about the title. But when you move on from that topic, they circle back to it. Twice.

The words say one thing. 
Everything else says another.

Most of us were taught that good coaching means being a great listener. 

And it's true. 
But great coaching pairs listening with noticing.

You can't coach what you can't see.

And if you're only working with what clients tell you, you might be you might be missing the most valuable data. 

The breakthroughs don't live in the script. They live in the moments between the lines.

The career professionals who communicate most effectively are the ones paying the closest attention.

📌 Start practicing mindful observation this week. Pick one conversation and just notice more than you normally would. You might be surprised by what you pick up on when you slow down and pay more attention.

92 million jobs lost by 2030. 
Are you ready? 

The WEF just mapped out 4 possible futures for work in 2030.

Every single one of them has something in common: the workers who fare best won't be the ones who outrun AI. 

They'll be the ones ready for it.

Here's what the data actually says:

➠ 170 million new jobs will be created by 2030. 
➠ 92 million will be displaced. 
➠ And more than 40% of skills will change faster than anyone predicted.

But here's what most people will ignore when absorbing their message: the outcome won't be determined by how fast AI moves. 

The outcome will be determined by how ready the workforce is when it gets there.

The WEF laid out four scenarios:

1/ Co-Pilot Economy
✓ augmentation over automation
✓ human skills at premium value

2/ Supercharged Progress
✓ exponential AI breakthroughs
✓ fast-emerging new occupations

3/ Stalled Progress
✓ widening skills gaps
✓ disappearing routine roles

4/ Age of Displacement
✓ AI outpacing workforce adaptation
✓ unemployment spikes

The difference between these 4 possible realities isn't technology. 

It’s preparation.

As career coaches, this is our moment. 

Our clients are navigating a fundamental shift in what work means.

The question we should be asking every client right now is "which future are you preparing for?"

High achievers don't fail because they're lazy. They fail because they're too efficient…

…at the wrong things. 

I've worked with high achievers for years, and here's what I've learned:

The thing blocking their growth is almost never lack of drive. It's something way more invisible.

And way more fixable.

What I see most often:

Scattered priorities
> Everything feels urgent, so nothing actually moves forward

Unclear expectations
> You're working hard, just not on what gets rewarded

No feedback loop
> You're grinding without learning

Over-functioning
> You've become the fixer, and now you're stuck there

Dramatic reinvention will not change these patterns. 

Small, strategic adjustments that reduce friction and create repeatable progress is what works:

80/20 focus 
> Stop trying to move everything and identify the 20% that's actually driving results.

Role clarity
> Nail down who does what so you're not wasting energy on confusion and rework.

Try-test-refine
> Run small experiments instead of betting everything on one big move.

The research backs this up:
Global engagement sits at 21% (and falling). But one of the strongest predictors of engagement is knowing what's expected of you at work. 

Get that right, and productivity can jump significantly.

Small wins drive motivation better than big, distant goals. It's called the progress principle, and it shows up in study after study.

Peter Drucker said it best: "There is nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency something that should not be done at all."

Growth doesn't need to feel so hard.

Surface problems are easy to solve. They're just rarely the ones that matter.

The difference isn't technique. 
It's knowing what you're actually looking at.

Because what clients say and what they need are rarely the same thing. 

Your job isn't to take requests at face value. It's to hear what's below the surface.

Here's what that sounds like in practice:

1/ "I need help with my resume"
Most people don't know how to talk about their own value. They need confirmation that their experience actually counts. Some are also avoiding the scarier work of applying at all.
📌 Resume tweaks feel productive, but it's the identity work that feels vulnerable. 

2/ "I'm waiting for the right opportunity"
Most people don't enter coaching with a clear target. They're afraid of choosing wrong and waiting feels a whole lot safer than deciding.
📌 The right opportunity doesn't appear on its own. It comes into focus when the direction does.

3/ "I just need to network more"
Most people are doing what they think they're supposed to do. Staying busy feels like moving forward.
📌 More stuff won't fix an unclear path.

4/ "Should I go back to school?"
People don't feel credible enough for the next move, so education helps them delay a bigger decision. They're waiting for someone to tell them they're ready.
📌 Another degree rarely closes a confidence gap.

5/ "I don't know what I want"
People know. But saying it out loud makes it real. They want several things and can't choose between them. They're holding out for certainty that isn't coming.
📌 Clarity doesn't arrive. It gets built, one small decision at a time.

Amateur coaches answer the question asked. 

Seasoned coaches solve for what's underneath.

When you learn to diagnose the real problem, your clients stop spinning. 

And start moving.

⤷ Why should they trust you if you’re not building your own credibility?
⤷ Demonstrate your professional knowledge by advancing your expertise and network.

❌Underestimating Personal Branding
⤷ If you’re not teaching them LinkedIn strategy, you’re leaving opportunities on the table.
