Full house. Standing room only by the time we started.

This wasn't just another meetup. We brought together some of the sharpest minds in sales automation and AI-driven outreach for a hands-on session that pushed everyone's thinking on prospecting.

What I didn't do once:

Pitch my service. 
Hand out business cards like flyers. 
Ask for anything.

Because that's not how real relationships work.

Think about it like dating. 

You wouldn't walk up to someone and immediately ask them to marry you. You wouldn't spend the entire first conversation talking about yourself and what you need.

That's what most people do at networking events. They pitch before they know your name. They hand you a card before they ask what you do.

It's the business equivalent of proposing on a first date.

The best connections I made? 

They happened when I was genuinely curious about what someone else was building. When I shared a resource that might help them. When I listened more than I talked.

One conversation led to an intro. Another turned into a follow-up call next week. A third might lead nowhere, and that's fine too.

The people who showed up trying to sell something? They left with nothing.

The people who showed up to learn and connect? They left with relationships.

Networking isn't about what you can get today. It's about who you can help, what you can learn, and the trust you build over time.

That's what makes these events worth it.

If you're heading to a summit or conference soon, forget the pitch. Show up curious. Be helpful. Build real connections.

The opportunities will follow.

Nobody tells you what running a GTM agency actually costs.

That's intentional.

The gurus selling courses want your money.
The successful agencies want to keep their edge.

You see the wins on LinkedIn.
The client logos. The revenue screenshots. The "we're hiring" posts.

You don't see the reality.

They say:

"GTM engineers are in demand."
"Agencies have great margins."
"You can scale quickly."

They don't say:

→ You'll underprice your service for 6 months
→ One bad client can sink your entire operation
→ LinkedIn content alone won't get you clients
→ You'll burn $10k+ on setup before your first dollar

The technical skills that made you valuable as a GTM engineer? Just the baseline everyone expects now.

You're competing against 500 other "Certified Clay Experts" who look exactly like you.

You'll spend 90% of your time on calls and delivery. Not building your business.

You hire someone to help. They can't deliver without your review of everything. You're still the bottleneck.

Most GTM engineers think they're starting an agency. They're actually starting a sales job with technical debt.

Before you jump, answer these:

Can you survive for 3 months without any income?
Do you have a pipeline of warm leads ready?
Can you sell as well as you can implement?
Are you ready to be "on" 24/7?

If you can't answer yes to all four, wait.

The opportunity is real. I see agencies billing $200-300k/year with just 2 people.

But nobody's sharing the 47 failed client calls it took to get there. Or the $15k they spent on marketing that generated zero leads. Or the nights spent rewriting proposals because "the prospect went quiet."

For those who've made the jump or are thinking about it: what's the hidden cost nobody warned you about?

My client was about to hire 5 people they didn't need.

Leadership's solution? Add 3 SDRs and 2 marketers.

That's $300K+ in salaries alone.

They brought me in to pressure-test the plan.

The problem wasn't headcount. It was their systems.

Sales couldn't see which prospects engaged with marketing content. Marketing had no idea which leads actually converted. Product data lived in a separate universe.

Everyone was working blind.

And here's the kicker: they were already paying $4,200/month for tools that could fix this. They just weren't using them right.

I proposed 6 weeks to build a unified GTM system instead.

The math: $25K systems investment vs. $300K+ in new headcount.

They were a $12M ARR company. At that stage, every hire decision is make-or-break.

Treat your GTM like an engineering problem. Build the system first. Then scale the team.
