If you are worried about the cost of going for it, you should see the price of staying where you are.

I was given this advice early in my career, and it is one I return to often. Growth, innovation, and change always come with a cost. 

▪️So does comfort. 
▪️So does hesitation. 
▪️So does waiting until the moment feels safe or perfectly clear.

Sometimes the bigger risk is not failure. It is staying in a place that no longer stretches you.

Standing still can look responsible. It can look practical. It can even look successful from the outside. But over time, it often becomes the most expensive choice of all.

Growth is rarely loud in the moment. It is a quiet decision to move forward even when certainty is not guaranteed. Those decisions are the ones that change the trajectory of your life.

What would change if you stopped waiting for certainty and chose movement instead? And what advice has helped you make that decision when it mattered most?

What are clients saying in 2026? Executives are starting this year with less patience and more scrutiny around sustainability, and supply chain innovation. They aren’t asking for more ambition. They are asking for clarity and control.

At the top of the list, executives want the following outcomes:

- Predictable results that can be measured consistently and reviewed at the executive and board level.
- Decisions that are grounded in real operational, product, and supplier data rather than assumptions or proxies.
- Clear visibility into which initiatives are improving performance and which ones are not.
- Early insight into regulatory, ESG, and supply chain risks before they become disruptions. A pause on changing regulation fire drills to “hurry up” but continuity in foresight and overlap with operational data needed to comply
- Alignment between sustainability goals, supply chain execution, and innovation investment.

What's changed? Executives are growing impatient and have taken a step back from:

- Disconnected sustainability initiatives that sit outside core operating decisions.
- Innovation programs that pursue novelty without delivering measurable impact.
- Competing budget requests that lack shared metrics or accountability.
- Reports that describe ambition without demonstrating results and clear outcomes. Value must be anchored in real, relatable, and connected data.

The shift in conversation is not surprising but I’m sensing a lack of trust. Trust has eroded for these key reasons:

- Leaders were asked to fund initiatives without a clear understanding of returns or risk reduction. Framing and accurate storytelling may have been missing at the onset. 
- Sustainability and innovation were treated as parallel efforts instead of operating disciplines. This is key. Joined funding with other business units would have created tighter coupling and business case. 
- Reporting emphasized commitments rather than performance.
- Accountability for outcomes was unclear or fragmented.

As a result, expectations for 2026 are changing and these are must-haves:

- Sustainability must directly inform supply chain, risk, and capital allocation decisions.
- Innovation must strengthen resilience, efficiency, or growth in measurable ways. AI pilots are still in play but must be integrated with enterprise data and architecture, not stand alone projects. 
- Performance must be governed through consistent metrics and regular executive review.

Trust is rebuilt when sustainability, supply chain, and innovation operate as a unified business system with shared goals, data, and accountability.

As I reflect on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, I can’t help but think about how his vision of an "inescapable network of mutuality" resonates deeply with today's interconnected struggles for climate justice, gender equity, and racial justice. Deep values of equality and justice resonate far beyond the civil rights movement. His principles are deeply relevant to today’s fight for climate justice and sustainability, and I believe these issues are interconnected in ways we can no longer ignore.

The climate crisis is not just an environmental issue, it’s a human issue. Marginalized communities often bear the brunt of environmental degradation, from extreme weather events to pollution and resource scarcity. Addressing these injustices means advocating for a future that is not only sustainable but also equitable and inclusive for all.

To me, Dr. King’s dream reminds us of this simple truth: justice is universal. True sustainability isn’t just about reducing carbon footprints, it’s about building systems that uplift people while protecting the planet.

In this blog, I explore:

The Global South is building the supply chains that will define this century, and most Western leaders still don’t see it.

This week at Davos, in a session titled “AI Power Play, No Referees,” India’s Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said the quiet part out loud: “Creating a large model doesn’t give you power as a country.” This is strategic autonomy in action.

Three months ago, Dr. Gautam Desiraju recorded a conversation on the Supply Chain Revolution®  podcast about exactly this shift, from colonial extraction to regenerative frontiers. As South-South cooperation continues to grow, and bypasses Western gatekeepers, capability over dependency relationships, and regenerative models where ecosystem restoration equals economic advantage.

At Davos, the IMF warned about an “AI diffusion divide,” André Hoffmann declared “do no harm is no longer enough, we must regenerate,” and Mark Carney admitted “the rules-based order no longer works.” But the solutions they’re seeking are already being built in the Global South. 

Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Investment Khalid Al-Falih added another critical insight in the same session: “The essence of AI’s power is it has to be accessible. Diffusion has to be done globally.” Not concentration. Not extraction. Diffusion and access.

My conversation with Dr. Desiraju isn’t about what should happen. It’s about what is happening right now. We explored:

As leaders race to reinvent through AI, data, and sustainability, remember that innovation is not the art of invention. It is the architecture of connection.

Everyone loves the story of the next big idea. But research on 300 companies across two decades shows something uncomfortable. Novel business models alone rarely lead to high performance.

In Business Model Innovation: Seven Essentials from MIT Sloan Management Review, Leppänen, George, and Alexy reveal that success depends on how you design the system, not how creative your idea sounds in a pitch.

Here are the seven lessons every leader should know before chasing the next disruption:

✅ 1. Novelty needs discipline.
Spotify scaled because its freemium model was reinforced by efficiency, personalization, and partnerships. Clubhouse had novelty but no system to sustain it.

✅ 2. Efficiency is strategic.
Shein and Tesla turned efficiency into an innovation advantage. Breakthrough models need strong plumbing that scales with ambition.

✅ 3. Strategy must align with your model.
Warby Parker, Apple, and Southwest proved that novelty without clear differentiation or cost leadership creates confusion, not performance.

✅ 4. AI supercharges models, it doesn’t replace them.
Duolingo and Netflix built AI into every part of their design from lock-in to monetization. AI creates power when it connects to value capture.

✅ 5. Sustainability is design, not disclosure.
Patagonia and Ørsted integrated sustainability into how they generate and capture value. True climate leadership starts with the business model, not the annual report.

✅ 6. Match your model to your size and timing.
Startups thrive with simple models that move fast. Incumbents succeed when they build complex systems that match their scale and resources.

✅ 7. Novelty is necessary but never enough.
Airbnb, Stripe, and Nvidia succeeded because they embedded novelty within a coherent value system of trust, integration, and partnerships.

The takeaway: Think system, not sizzle. 

“Before launching a new business model, ask yourself:
✔️ How will we create value in ways others cannot?
✔️ How will we capture value consistently and sustainably?
✔️ Are our value drivers — novelty, efficiency, lock-in, and complementary partnerships — working together?
✔️ Is the model aligned with our company’s strategy, structure, size, and technological context?”

I woke up thinking about patience in a world obsessed with speed. You cannot harvest where you have not planted 🌱.

I see this pattern constantly across innovation landscapes. We expect breakthrough results without committing to the foundational work required to produce them. There are many good ideas in the world, but the most transformative ones do not appear fully formed. They grow from seeds that are intentionally placed in fertile ground and tended over time.

The innovations that reshape markets do not arrive overnight. They emerge from:
🌍 diverse perspectives
🧠 protected space for bold thinking, and ⏳ sustained commitment long before results are visible.

The technological leaps that appear sudden almost never are. Look closer and you will find teams who nurtured fragile possibilities when outcomes were uncertain and progress was slow.

The organizations that remain resilient through disruption did not get lucky. They invested early in:
📚 learning cultures
🔄 adaptive capabilities
🤝 and trust long before those strengths were tested.

I have also seen leaders chase short term wins while neglecting the deeper cultivation required for sustainable success. These situations tend to share one thing in common…

They seek harvests in fields they never prepared 🚫🌱.

True innovation requires both vision and patience. It asks us to become thoughtful gardeners of the future by choosing which ideas deserve resources, which possibilities need protection in their early stages, and which experiments may yield unexpected abundance.

Cultivating what others cannot yet see takes courage. It means committing before certainty arrives and tending progress when results are not immediate.

🌱 Vision shows us what to plant.
⏳ Patience gives it time to grow.
🌟 The greatest achievements belong to those who master both.

What is something you are deliberately planting now, even though the results may not show up this year?

The World Economic Forum just released its 2026 Global Risks Report, and this chart tells the story better than any headline. At first glance, it looks like climate has been pushed aside. It has not.

~What we are seeing is a reprioritization driven by geopolitics, not a resolution of environmental risk.

How to read this image: The left side shows what leaders believe will hit hardest in the next two years:
▪️Geoeconomic confrontation
▪️Misinformation and disinformation
▪️Societal polarization
▪️State based conflict

The right side shows what will shape the next decade:
▪️Extreme weather events
▪️Biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse
▪️Critical change to Earth systems
▪️Adverse outcomes of AI

~Short term instability is crowding out long term consequence.

In 2022, this same report marked a turning point. For the first time, most of the top global risks facing business and humanity were environmental. Climate, nature, and planetary systems dominated the outlook across time horizons.

~That did not change in 2026 because the science changed. It changed because the political and geopolitical environment deteriorated.

What is actually happening? 

Geopolitics is now shaping:
▪️Regulation and regulatory fragmentation
▪️Trade and industrial policy
▪️Sustainability mandates and reversals
▪️Supply chain design and capital allocation

~Environmental risk has not declined. It has been temporarily deprioritized under pressure and that is the real risk.

The implication for business and supply chains now operating in a dual reality:
▪️Short term decisions are being driven by conflict, fragmentation, and information disorder
▪️Long term value is still dictated by climate stability, ecosystem resilience, and system integrity

Organizations that treat this as an either or choice will struggle. The winners will be those that can navigate geopolitics without losing sight of the decade ahead.

~This is not about climate versus geopolitics. It is about climate inside geopolitics. That is now the operating environment.

Some of the most advanced insights in leadership, supply chain and sustainability don’t come from AI or digital twins. They come from lived experience in harsh climates, communal systems, and interdependent survival.

In Big Idea 8, James George and I sat down with Namuun Purevdorj, a leader who bridges two powerful knowledge systems. She was raised in Mongolia’s nomadic culture and trained at MIT in supply chain systems. Today, she leads the eyewear category at Amazon Retail US, after driving decarbonization and supplier enablement work across Amazon’s global procurement teams.

Namuun's perspective is rare. It combines the seasonal rhythms of a land-based people with the analytical rigor of modern operations. She does not see these as opposites. She sees them as complementary.

Here are 5 principles from our conversation that I keep returning to that define Regenerative Leadership in the modern workplace inspired by ancestral  or indigenous wisdom: 

1. Interdependence. Mongolian worldviews teach that your well-being depends on the well-being of the people and land around you. Every action has a ripple. Every system has a center. Ask: who else needs to thrive for this to work?

2. Dialogue as governance. "People settle problems with the tongue. Animals with their feet." Decisions are made through conversation, not control. Trust builds alignment. Dialogue is not a soft skill. It is infrastructure.

3. Stewardship. You only take what the land can regenerate. This is the logic of natural systems. When companies forget this, they mistake speed, waste, and linearity for success. Regeneration starts with intention, connection, and at times restraint.

4. Resilience. Winter in Mongolia reaches -40°C. Resilience is not a slogan. It is a lived reality. Moving through seasons builds the same muscle as scenario planning, roadmap mapping, and systems framing.

5. Identity and place. Nutag is the land you come from. If the land is not well, you are not well. In complex transformation, you cannot build enduring systems without cultural grounding and ownership.

Namuun shared the story of Queen Mandukhai, who asked her sons to break a single stick. Each did. Then she gave them a bundle. None could break it. That is how strength of community, of the network, and being purpose-led works.

Sustainability and systems transformation are not just technical challenges.
