I said the Meta Quest was a failure.

Some VR enthusiasts did not love that. How can something that sold 20 million units be a failure?

Easy. Because the Quest was never supposed to be “a successful gaming headset.” Meta didn’t spend more than US$75 billion to make a better Wii Fit. The Quest was supposed to be the next mass-market computing platform. At that level of spend, you don’t win by moving 15–20 million units across an entire decade.

You need iPhone numbers. Hundreds of millions of devices. Tens of billions in recurring revenue. A whole ecosystem where hardware, software, services and identity all fuse into an everything-machine. That’s what Meta was chasing. That’s what the Quest never achieved.

And it’s not just me saying this. Former Oculus and Meta employees have said the same to me directly. Chris Corry himself, former Head of Oculus Studios Operations and former Director of Metaverse Content Operations at Meta, publicly agreed. When the people who worked on this stuff say the miss was real, it’s not “hater energy.” It’s reality.

I’m not saying VR is dead. Far from it. Valve’s upcoming Steam Frame suggests the opposite. Porting SteamOS to an ARM system and getting Proton working on it is not some casual side project. That is a tectonic shift with implications far beyond VR.

But the Quest did not accomplish Meta’s goals. And we should be grown-ups about that. VR doesn’t need to live up to the expectations Meta set. It just needs to evolve into whatever actually works.

It’s these momentary interactions that inspire me to power through 4+ days of IAAPA.
