For the past 10 years, I've built "commerce enablement" tools in the Shopify ecosystem that help DTC brands make more $$$.

With CartHook, we brought post-purchase upsells to the Shopify ecosystem and worked directly w/ Shopify to add it natively. 

CartHook processed > $1B GMV and added $250MM/year in revenue through its post-purchase upsell tech. It was acquired by Pantastic in 2022.

At Rodeo, we released one of the first native Shopify subscription apps (acquired by Recharge) and pivoted to a LTV Growth platform that originated as a small feature. Ultimately, wound it down as Shopify actively started building a solution themselves.

I'm often asked if prompt structure actually matters when coding w/ AI.

Most people intuitively know it does. What they don't realize is how much -- especially when you compound it over hundreds of prompts while building something. So I ran a test.

I asked Claude the same question four different ways: "How do I sell access to a private GitHub repo with per-person revocable tokens?"

Same model. Minutes apart. Same knowledge.

First try -- just typed it in. 45 words. Got back a decent options list. The kind of answer that feels useful until you try to actually build from it.

Second try -- ran the same question through a plugin that does web research (Superpowers). 27 tool calls, 3 minutes of agent work. Better sourced. Same shape though. Still just a list.

Third try is where it gets interesting.

Ran my 45 words through Promptó (my free prompt tool). It expanded to 193 words with clear sections and format instructions. Fed that to Claude raw -- no plugin, no web search.

Got a full implementation guide. Comparison tables. Working code. Stripe webhooks. Rate limits. Security checklists.

The AI didn't know anything new. I just told it what I actually wanted.

Last try -- structured prompt + plugin together. The plugin started asking me questions I hadn't thought of:
- "What does 'access' mean -- git clone? Browse on GitHub? Install a package?"
- "How important is preventing redistribution?"

Used my answers to arrive at a completely different architecture I never would've asked for. Custom download server with API keys and watermarking.

The kicker: the structured prompt made the plugin smarter. It asked better questions because it had better structure to work from. Neither lever alone came close to pulling both.
