Key achievements: 

✪ Trusted advisor to the CFO and recognised at board level

✪ Managed the directorate’s annual business planning (circa £56m) process across all teams and was in closely liaised with other directorates in the organisation, make recommendations and supported the CFO during the organisation’s review and approval process.

✪ Owned the directorate’s workforce plan (circa 220 employees) and ensured consistency with approved budgets and business needs; reviewed and drove plans

Key Duties: 

► Ensured that the directorate’s operations are running in a smooth manner by identifying key issues and risks whilst offering recommendations or implementation solutions.
► Supported the CFO, Finance and Commercial in developing the overall directorate’s strategy and operating model.
► Worked alongside our PMO team to drive  programme and project management into the directorate, I was responsible for ensuring the delivery of projects and work streams to support the finance and procurement directorates

Business Manager supporting the CFO and Finance, Commercial Services

Key achievements: 

✪ Coordinated and reviewed the relocation programme from London to Birmingham for Commercial and Procurement affecting up to 120 employees. Building a criterion to evaluate roles, assessed impacts on individuals and carried out formal consultations  

✪ Identified programme and project milestones for the Commercial Directorate capturing and reviewing over 230 milestones and finalising 6 out of the 10 core milestones to deliver HS2’s Corporate Plan 2016-2017

✪ Aligned with individual project managers to ensure corporate programmes plans are aligned to Commercial and Procurement plans to support delivery, this included the Main Works Civils (£6.6bn contractual value), Early Works Contract (£900m) and other key construction contract

✪Project managed the Business Planning process of 140 employees and a programme budget of £10m. Identifying issues, risks, peaks in workloads and captured over £500m worth of procurements from the rest of the business in the pipeline.
Key duties included

► Assisted the Directorate in developing its overall strategy and operating model
► Developed, monitored and reported on the Directorate Management Plan and annual delivery plans. This included suggesting necessary commissioning corrective actions
►Owned and managed the Commercial Directorate reporting packs
► Identified with the Directorate Management Team the key Commercial Directorate risks and monitored their mitigation activities as part of the overall directorate programme of work using Xactium

Grant Thornton UK LLP

Selected for fixed term contract to turn around under-performing projects within Grant Thornton's GrowthAccelerator, now rebranded as the Business Growth Service. The business model is to support high-growth Small to Medium Enterprises on behalf of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. 
Projects included Business School Programmes, Psychometric Profiling, Coach Embedding and a TNA

Key achievements:

✪ Increased capacity of pilot projects from 5% to 80% within six months, with over 450 SMEs taking part, boosting market awareness though targeted publicity and efficient networking.

✪ Maximised project efficiency through planning, progress reporting and robust process creation and implemented PRINCE2 methodology to upgrade ongoing departmental performance.

✪ Identified substantial commercial benefits post-pilot with 84% of participating companies experiencing marked improvements and at least 52% increase in revenues within a year.

✪ Closed down unviable project (TNA) when costs exceeding benefits saving £370k.

✪ Delivered practical guidance and support to young entrepreneurs in voluntary role as Relationship Manager at Peter Jones Enterprise Academy for Students.

Key Duties:

♦ Assessed ways of mobilising and delivering five pilot projects to utilise £3.1M grant funding in full; researched business and marketing needs and liaised closely with Business Schools and stakeholders. 
♦ Managed projects from initiation to completion, preparing business cases, initiation documentation and consultations to gain approval; obtained extra funding through cogent post project assessments.
♦ Responsible for developing comprehensive project plans to ensure regular progress reporting. Identified the need for creating robust processes to incorporate areas such as risk, issues, quality and lessons learnt structures within the projects.

As a Project Executive my main area of expertise was within the Leadership and Management specialism. What this focused was having businesses develop there staff and equip them with the critical skills to achieve their business growth goals.

I managed and coordinated multiple projects within Leadership and Management which totalled to £3.1m. 

The last project was a £1.595m project with a consortium of business schools, tailoring a 5 day intensive management programme that would overcome barriers to growth with world class facilitators.

PILOT 1: BUSINESS SCHOOL PROGRAMMES

This allowed senior managers to develop critical skills to manage their business and accelerate growth. GrowthAccelerator customers had the flexibility in selecting from a variety of courses such as SME business growth programmes to MBAs. But the university provider needed to be part of the Association of Business schools. The grant funding was up to 50% match funded.

PILOT 2 : PSYCHOMETRIC PROFILING AND WORKSHOPS

Businesses applied for workshops such as Insight Discovery, DISC profiling Belbin and Talent Dynamics. This allowed the senior managers, to understand there strengths & weaknesses and see how others perceive them. Ultimately the workshops offered solutions for a more collaborative team.

What do you do after undergoing training? Store those training folders and get back to the day job? The coach embedding program was designed to get those folders out and apply certain aspects to the business. It allowed coaches to go back into the business post training to implement certain aspects of the training learnt

At the heart of what Dom is about is unlocking people’s potential and aiding in supporting their development. He has always coached and mentored people throughout his career which gives him an abundance of energy transferred to others who go on and make meaningful impactful change. This encompasses, the key question at the forefront of his mind, is where he can add value. He won’t rest until value is defined and demonstrated while working with you.

Career wise, Dom describes it as squiggly and enriching. He started working as a debt collector with RBS as a school leaver which opened his mind to exploring opportunities that education can unlock. After going back to college, he gained a 2:1 at Loughborough which launched his consulting career at PwC in the Channel Islands, qualifying as an accountant whilst working on financial service clients. Moving as a small business advisor for 400 business in coaching, project managing at HS2 and being a management consultant as a scrum master and agile coach at Moorhouse Consulting.
