That's what Digital Elevator saves each month by NOT running ads.

Another way to look at it is that the value of our organic search traffic, if it were to be acquired via PPC in Google Ads, is $40,000 per month.

I had a theory I wanted to test about one year ago:

Can I invest solely in content marketing and get the same, or better, results than if I poured that money into ads?

The answer is 'yes.'

The primary focus of mine as it concerns content marketing over the past year was to create SEO-friendly, bottom-funnel content and rank the 💩 outta it.

More recently, that focus has been shifted to brand mentions in LLMs.

Bottom funnel content tends to fetch high cost-per-clicks because it generally is highly associated with sales/lead generation. 

Now, 6,600 organic visits a month is not a ton. It's respectable, but it's nothing amazing (Neil Patel's site gets like a mil).

The lesson is that you don't need some inflated vanity metric of traffic; you need strategic traffic that drives results. 

Organic traffic value is a very good barometer for that.

I take pride in being an agency that practices what it preaches, meaning I do for my own brand what I do for our clients. 

Now, I have nothing against ads. I used to run them for our agency across multiple platforms, but when I considered the effectiveness of "good" content marketing, its inherent cost vs ads, and the results, it was a no-brainer to shift the focus.

I think it could be for your brand, too, done correctly.

Oh, and I haven't even scratched the surface here. 

I still haven't put a lot (recently) into YouTube, podcasting, speaking engagements, or PR. 

Still lots to do.

It's not a coincidence; here's the formula for marketing directors:

1. Document the 3 primary services you want to be known for or build awareness to.
ex. for us, biotech SEO, content marketing, and AI discoverability are key.

2. Optimize your sales pages for product intent and industry intent. Speaking to your ICP has never been more important than now with AI. If you have multiple ICPs, create use case by ICP pages.

3. Create 3 resources for each service. Choose from these content types: [industry challenge] strategy, 
[industry service] pricing guides, 
[competitor] vs you, 
best [industry service] companies, 
[industry} ROI calculator, 
[industry service] case study.

4. Discoverability- build links for SEO, and build mentions for AI.

5. Monitor rankings and mentions. Optimize as necessary.

6. Repeat steps 1-5 for your next phase of services.

I strongly suggest spending the bulk of your time on this type of middle- and bottom-funnel content as opposed to what is, how to, or informational type content.

In this example, I'd effectively have a content roadmap for 9 resources. Once you get the formula down on the initial three content types, it gets much easier to follow that same content template.

The principle of "topical authority" is solved for here, as is SEO-friendly content marketing, AI-friendly content, sales enablement content, etc.

You may not be ready to do AEO.

That's okay, but it pays to know this before you start a marketing campaign that isn't ready for launch.

Before you start trying to build brand mentions in LLMs, do this first:

1. Run a quick visibility check across 5 sample prompts related to your business.
2. See how you stack up against competitors in terms of overall visibility (measured across all sample prompts), as well as if you appear in the individual prompts as a recommended brand.

In the case of this screenshot, the fourth brand (blurred for privacy) had a 0% visibility score, and was mentioned in zero prompts.

Generally, this indicates one or more of the below:
- the brand has a mixed bag of positioning identifiers signaling to LLMs that it doesn't fit into a clear solution for anything (ex. Thinkific is known as the best platform for creating and selling courses).
- the brand has zero to little SEO in place related to the solutions it provides.
- the brand has zero to little PR related to its USP.

With LLMs, you can get mentions much more quickly than with SEO, but it heavily leans on your brand's ability to be known across the web for something specific. 

Klavio is a great example of this type of positioning and how to think of it for your brand. They are known as the email marketing platform for eCommerce, rather than just another "email marketing platform."

So before you invest in AEO, review your current visibility for the prompts important to you and plan accordingly.

This is the exact process we use to increase AI visibility for our clients.

First, we enter our target prompts into our AI search analytics software.

We exclusively focus on bottom-funnel prompts such as "best, comparison, versus, or pricing" as these have transactional intent. 

We then look at the top sources (citations) that the LLMs are using to pull their data from, as this is where the mentions are fueled from (in part).

For relevant sites that have roundup posts like those in the screenshot, we manually reach out to each source to negotiate a mention of our clients.

We do this across multiple LLMs -- ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AIO -- to secure as many placements as possible. 

The end result is increased visibility on per prompt basis, as well as a brand level.

3 things agency reps should never do on sales calls:

1) Say "we're the only agency doing 'x.'" 
- You're probably not, and it's a major sales turnoff.

2) Say "we're the cheapest agency for 'y' service." 
- There's always someone cheaper. Prices put you in a commodity zone, a tough place to be in as an agency.

3) Agree to price reductions because the prospect asks. 
- It's ok to reduce the price, but only if you reduce scope along with it.

Bonus no-no:
Starting the call with "how's it going/where you calling from/how's the weather" in an effort to build rapport. Doing this instantly lowers status.
