Where did this phrase come from? It comes from poker. A buck (marker) was passed to indicate whose turn it was to deal. When the buck stopped with someone, they had to act.

How does this connect with parenting?

This is the love that shapes us the most. It is the love that doesn’t demand. 

What does unconditional love look like? It is all about:
 
🍀Showing love through your actions and words 
🍀Staying connected even as you set limits on your child’s behaviour
🍀Being in control of your temper even when you have enough reason to ‘blow your top’
🍀Accepting your child as human and immature who is likely to make mistakes
🍀Being able to apologize with sincerity when you make mistakes
🍀Helping your child be his/her best self without putting undue pressure
🍀Being accepting of your child with all his/her flaws and being open to learning from your child. 

Unconditional love is hard to practice in our daily lives. But it can be done with determination and resolve.

𝗔 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝘀. 𝗔 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗮. 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘁. 

An incident that happened very recently has been heavy and unsettling.

In a crowded bus, a young woman recorded a man, alleging inappropriate touch. The video was shared widely. Soon after, the man, overwhelmed by public shame and humiliation, ended his life. His family has demanded justice saying the woman made the video just to go viral and to monetise.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆?

We are raising children who are incredibly fluent with technology, yet often unprepared to cope emotionally. Today, a single moment, captured, judged, and amplified online can define a person forever.

This tragedy exposes a deeper gap:
👉 difficulty regulating emotions
👉 inability to cope with shame and humiliation 
👉 lack of resilience and help-seeking skills

This reminds us that ‘Life skills’ are not “extra.” They are essential. They are survival skills.

Our children need empathy, emotional strength, conflict resolution and the courage to ask for help before despair takes over.

If we don’t nurture these early, the cost will be too high and sometimes as in the case of the young man in the story, irreversible.

Let’s raise humans, not just high performers

This is the loving letter I received that took me by surprise. Many things are bought online but which business owner takes the time to send you a letter to connect with you?

This made me think of when I spoke to Prateek, a brilliant student in high school and how he felt unwelcome in his own family. He got the feeling he was never good enough. “I feel like I let them down on every occasion” he added with a sad look.

Treating children like guests creates an atmosphere of respect, warmth, and emotional safety in the home. Behind this mindset is the understanding that children will one day grow up and fly away to build lives of their own. When they experience love, courtesy and consideration, they naturally learn to offer the same to others. This approach helps raise confident, respectful, and emotionally secure adults.

Do you ever wonder how responding differently can make a difference ?

It was the year 2004, I was travelling with a group of grade 4 students from Kampala Uganda for a study trip to Egypt. 

On our return trip, the children carried the gifts they had bought for their families. 

In the plane, Sophie one of the children let out a big howl, a doll she bought for her little sister got left behind at the airport. I informed the airline staff about the missing item.

I comforted her as the plane took off. After some time the plane went into slumber mode. I could hear Sophie’s sobs in her sleep.

On arrival in Kampala, we were received by an airline staff who gave Sophie her missing doll. She gave a cry of delight and face shone with happiness!

Looking back, it’s a story that ended well. However, I kept thinking I could have handled it better. I could have asked Sophie a simple question :

“Can you tell me about it?”

This would have given Sophie a chance to express her feelings. It would have helped her make sense of her emotional distress.

Every year, millions of girls disappear from classrooms before they turn 18.

On National Girl Child Day, I think of a young girl I once met. Riyana was bright, curious, and full of dreams who quietly dropped out of school, not due to lack of ability, but lack of support.

The challenges for girls are real: early responsibilities, safety concerns, low self-belief, and limited life skills.

The solutions are for all of us as stakeholders: education, emotional resilience, communication skills, and parents who believe fiercely in their daughters.

When we invest in a girl, we don’t just change her life, we change generations.
