Previously, I built one of the UK’s first UX agencies from scratch, scaled it to £3m, sold it and lived to tell the tale. Then I wrote a bestselling book called Human Powered and launched an accompanying podcast.

It's been a 20-year rollercoaster journey!

Oh, and in 2023, I took my kids backpacking across Asia and Africa for six months. We survived hunting in Tanzania, paint fights in India and leech attacks in Borneo.

The CTO role primarily focussed on Inviqa’s technology strategy, both internally and externally. The external aspect of the role covered expanding the business, and identifying new products to use in projects. Internally I oversaw quality assurance on projects, improving internal processes, reducing time spent on non-core work, and deciding the company’s technical strategy for the future.

After 7 months as a senior software engineer within the company, I was promoted to the position of team leader, delivering projects with teams of sizes of up to five developers using agile practices.

Established in 1999, Ibuildings is the leading PHP authority in the UK and The Netherlands, and is also the proud representative of Zend Technologies. We assist organisations that deploy mission-critical LAMP technology. Ibuildings offers a comprehensive range of PHP services including web development, PHP training, professional services and application support.

I joined Ibuildings as a software engineer in January to start up the companies new office location in Sheffield. We quickly grew the team over the next six months to four people and established an office location for ourselves. During this time I was a core developer on a profitable product being rolled out in several countries and languages, making use of PHP5, Zend Framework and the jQuery javascript library.

After successfully leading a major project through to completion on time, I was promoted to the permanent position of lead developer. Since then I have achieved a number of successes in the department with the delivery of another major customer centric project, and improvements to the development process within the department.

Mainly working with PHP 5, but also Perl and bash shell scripting where required. I was part of the core team of people that built relationships and set up our development strategy for working with remote development teams based offshore. Using this strategy we have successfully delivered multiple projects to the business and will continue to evolve and use it going forward.

Internally to the department I have introduced a test driven development methodology (TDD)  that is being adopted across the business and mentored junior and senior members of our team in the use of TDD and it's benefits and challenges.

Working as a developer primarily using Perl, I was part of the core team that put together a platform for delivering and managing SMS based marketing solutions.

I designed and built web applications to deliver bulk SMS capability across a range of unrelated third party suppliers, and manage inbound SMS (premium rate and standard) campaigns for a number of well known brands.
