I fulfill several key roles at Growth Division. I am a co-founder, new business generator, CRM expert, martech whizz, drum n bass track recommender and Southern European correspondent from my current base in Lisbon. 

After Uni, I joined Europe’s largest tech distribution firm in their Business Intelligence unit. There I learned just about everything there is to learn about CRM, automation and analytics. 

Eventually, I partnered with Tom Dewhurst to work on Ordoo (an ordering F&B app), where we navigated the mad world of London startups and eventually got taken over by an investor. 

From there, I became a freelance CRM strategist and worked with 25 startups over the course of 18 months helping them get their customer journeys, automations and Spotify gym playlists right. 

A few years later, Tom and I joined our forces again and started Growth Division to help other startups overcome one of the biggest challenges Ordoo faced: finding and validating channels to market. 

We've so far helped 100+ startups globally find scalable channels to market. 

Beyond the day job I am a coffee obsessive, and avid adventurer wandering from London to Lisbon, Paris to New York.

A collection of moments from Lisbon, in images and words for a book we’re calling A Life in Lisbon.

All of the photos have been taken in and around Lisbon, within an hour of the city centre, by the incredibly talented Will Bremridge. 

Alongside them are short snippets I’ve written here in Lisbon: thoughts, philosophies, small observations and fragments of daily life.

It’s designed as a coffee table book. Something you can pick up at random, open, read a page, pause, put down, and come back to later.

There are over 220 photographs across 220 pages of premium gloss paper, wrapped in a beautifully embossed hard cover. We’ve printed just 250 limited first editions, and they are both made and printed in Lisbon.

Bootstrapping is usually the obvious first choice, but it’s not always the right final one.

We bootstrapped Growth Division for six years by growing it slowly and profitably, and that worked because it was a service business where Tom and I could do the execution ourselves early on.

The martech landscape is more fragmented than ever. 

There are already thousands of martech tools, most of them built around a single channel. 

AI is only accelerating that trend, with new tools launching constantly and adding even more layers of disconnected data across outreach, paid, content, email, and CRM systems.

One of the biggest lessons Tom Dewhurst and I learned at Ordoo was that trying to run growth channels you’re not an expert in slows everything down.

We spent a lot of time testing ideas, making progress, but never really knowing whether a channel was working or whether we were the bottleneck. The moment we brought in true channel experts, everything changed. 

Learning accelerated, decisions became clearer, and we could confidently double down on what was actually driving growth. 

That experience is what led us to build Growth Division the way we did: surrounding founders with deep, channel-specific expertise so growth becomes something you can validate quickly.

“Do we have a demand problem… or a positioning problem?”

In my experience, especially at the very early stages, it’s usually positioning.

When things aren’t landing, founders often jump straight to running more campaigns, adding channels, or increasing spend. But if you haven’t been extremely specific about who you’re targeting and what problem you’re solving for them, no amount of distribution will fix that.

The first test should be conversations.

Before you put any marketing live, you should be able to validate your messaging by speaking directly to as many prospective or current customers as possible. You can learn an enormous amount just by hearing how people respond to your problem framing and language.

If that doesn’t resonate in a conversation, it won’t magically work at scale.

Once you do go live, the key is to be very specific and treat it like an experiment: “I’m targeting this exact ICP, with this exact message, and I expect this outcome.”

That’s how you start to separate signal from noise.

You have 20 possible marketing channels, and need to start by testing just 3-6. Lots of them have potential. So, how do you shortlist them? 

Having been through this process for over 130 clients, I like to think I’ve got a good system in place for narrowing down potential channels. 

It looks something like:

Two calls with the founder or head of marketing 
→ I learn about their objectives, their unit economics, customer journey, etc. 

Channel-specific research
→ I have 54 questions I ask myself across 20 channels (and also look at what the startup has tried before now). 

Considering the overall mix 
→ I think about balancing long-term and short-term plays, consider which channels work best together, and throw in a low-budget curveball option if I think it’s right.

Most founders are looking for that one big breakthrough moment.

Can big brands afford to be less targeted? 🤷🏻‍♂️

In one of our recent Startup Teardowns, we took a look at OpenAI’s website, which features simple messaging, broad reach, and a very straightforward call to action: just sign up.

For a brand with massive awareness, sometimes the job isn’t precision targeting, but for early-stage startups, that approach would be reckless.

At scale, when your audience is effectively “everyone,” broad distribution can work, but the real question is: has your brand earned the right to be broad?

Hiring is easily one of the most difficult parts of building a company.

Over the last six years at Growth Division, Tom Dewhurst and I have interviewed and hired over 100 freelance and full-time marketing experts. And honestly, finding top-tier experts is super difficult.

People can have what looks like a great career history on LinkedIn, have worked for impressive companies, show fantastic portfolios, and even interview really well. 

But a lot of the time, you can’t actually tell how someone works until you start working with them for a few weeks on a real project and see how they operate day to day.

And that’s why hiring is so hard, because interviewing is, by definition, a proxy where you’re trying to simulate real performance in an artificial environment.

Thankfully, over the years, we’ve really honed our interview process. We’ve identified red flags and defined what exceptional looks like for us.

We got it right by setting clear table stakes that we absolutely have to see from a candidate by using mock projects and getting our Growth Strategist candidates to run mock phase one launch calls as part of the interview process.

But, even with all of these techniques, filtration systems and ways to identify good people, it’s still incredibly hard to know how good someone is going to be.

At the end of the day, the real and only way of understanding how good someone is, is by actually working with them.

That’s why our freelance/fractional model makes so much sense.

As a result of our processes, we’ve built a vetted community of experts over the last six years. The best freelancers are the ones who keep working with us continuously because they keep performing.

Finding good freelancers is really difficult, but finding great ones who consistently deliver is even harder.

That’s the gap we’ve spent years trying to solve.

Your gut instinct probably isn’t wrong, but you’re making a mistake by leaving it untested.

Great marketers use instinct to shape targeting and messaging, but the difference is that they validate it. 

They write down the hypothesis, define the metric, run the experiment, and let data sharpen their thinking.

Over time, instinct becomes informed pattern recognition instead of guesswork.

If experiments aren’t structured and stored, the learning disappears, and teams keep starting from zero.

Phwoar, now this is the stuff that gets me out of bed!

We ran a Monte Carlo backtest of WineFi Investment Score (WIS)-screened portfolios (WIS ≥ 70) against the Liv-ex 1000 benchmark over a 10-year holding period.

Rather than testing a single “perfect” portfolio, we simulated 600 randomly constructed portfolios, each subject to regional allocation constraints, to reflect real-world portfolio construction rather than hindsight optimisation.

The purple line shows the mean normalised performance across all simulations.

The shaded band represents ±1 standard deviation, and each thin line is an individual portfolio path.

For comparison:

👉 The red line represents a price-weighted index of Liv-ex 1000 constituents, simulating a simple buy-and-hold strategy using observed market prices.

👉 The dark-red line shows the official Liv-ex 1000 mid-price index.

The result?

Consistent outperformance across the distribution, not just at the mean - suggesting that the effect is driven by portfolio construction and asset selection, not a small number of extreme outcomes.

This is, of course, historical simulation, not a forecast. Markets change. Correlations shift. No backtest can remove risk.

But what it can do is demonstrate that, across cycles, systematic selection and disciplined allocation have historically mattered more than timing the market.

That’s the foundation we build on.

BIG build in public update 📈 

With the launch of our new website over the next few days, the performance (+ all holdings) of our fine wine investment syndicates will be displayed publicly.

Performance will be benchmarked against third-party indices, and audited by a third-party accountant (Complete HQ). 

I actually made a pledge to a stranger on Reddit to do this within Q1 2026.

He (or she) were skeptical of the concept of wine investment and the idea that anyone could "beat" the market. 

I'm glad to be following through on my promise publicly.

Build in public update: What's next for WineFi 🍷?

We set out to professionalise fine wine investment, bringing transparency and quantitative analysis to a market that has so often been inefficient and opaque.

Our quantitative models - an industry first - have played a critical role in ensuring all of our syndicates generate alpha vs. their respective benchmarks.

This is all the more impressive given the steep decline of the wine markets.

Since the beginning of the year, with the wine markets now in recovery, we have been testing growth channels (thank you Julian Trémaud) in order to scale the investment side of the business.

The launch of our new website is only the beginning. From here our plan is to:

1️⃣ Monetise our data tools.

This creates a B2B revenue stream that is decoupled from the cyclical nature of the wine markets. We have pilots in the offing with three industry players. More on this soon.

2️⃣ Introduce other adjacent asset classes to our platform.

Think whisky, tequila and rum. These can be integrated under the WineFi brand and already fit seamlessly within our syndicates or private portfolios.

3️⃣ Develop a product aimed at professional investors and large ticket clients following a discretionary trading strategy.

We’re expanding into adjacent assets, scaling our data infrastructure, and opening the door to larger pools of capital.

Gosh, who knew that actions had consequences? 

Turns out the Laffer Curve inconveniently does exist after all.

In fact, the alcohol sector is one of the clearest examples. 

Once duty is already high (as it is in the UK) further increases don’t generate more tax. They suppress legal consumption, push volume into lower-tax or untaxed channels and hollow out the on-trade.

That means...

Lower duty collected.
Less VAT.
Fewer viable pubs/bars/restaurants.
Fewer jobs.
...and a smaller total tax take.

Tax policy doesn’t operate in a vacuum. It operates in markets full of humans who respond to incentives.

Ignore that, and you get worse outcomes.

HM Revenue & Customs figures show a 4% year on year drop in Alcohol Duty receipts for the 2025 to 2026 financial year to date. The decline comes despite repeated upratings in duty. While late summer receipts edged up slightly, the broader trend indicates lower overall Treasury takings from beer, wine and spirits.

During COVID, the fine wine market experienced one of the strongest bull runs in its history -- reaching all time highs in October 2022.

Prices accelerated so sharply that at one point, the Liv-ex Burgundy 150 was outperforming the Nasdaq by 30%.

Looking back, two forces explain most of what happened.

1. Liquidity flooded the system

Governments and central banks pumped enormous amounts of stimulus into the global economy. Interest rates were near zero and investors were searching for alternative assets that could preserve value.

Fine wine suddenly started appearing on the radar of investors who had never previously considered it.

2. Consumers were stuck at home

Lockdowns changed spending behaviour dramatically. No travel, no eating out, no money spent on "experiences".

Instead, people spent money on things they could enjoy at home. Collectors invested in their cellars. 

The result was a powerful demand shock.

Prices across the fine wine market surged between 2020 and 2022.

Since then the market has been working through a correction. But cycles are a normal feature of every asset class.

The real question now is what the next phase of the wine market looks like.

The fine wine market has just come through the longest correction in market history.

After hitting all time highs in October 2022, the market drifted lower for 34 consecutive months.

When the time is right to sell to maximise returns, we sell the portfolios and distribute returns pro rata to investors.

Throughout the journey, investors can track the value of their portfolio in real time on our platform using two independent market prices.

Before this though, we were wine collectors and investors ourselves. We had become fascinated by the characteristics of fine wine as an asset class and the inefficiency of the market.

Our hypothesis was that through modern data science, we would be able to predict which wines were good investments and the right entry and exit points.
