𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐝𝐨: I co-teach a class on Nature in Counseling. I also provide workshops for the Adler Graduate School Institute on topics around Ecopsychology such as Ethics and Responsibilities in Outdoor Therapy and The Outdoor Life Task. 

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡: The primary audience is made up of counselors, social workers, therapists, and educators. However, through the AGS Institute, anyone can have access to continuing education workshops. 

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭: I partnered with Breanna Cahoy so we can bring both an ecological and psychological lens to the work of caring for wellness of both people and Earth. We do both synchronous and asynchronous classes and are looking forward to taking more of them directly outdoors. 

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: People and Earth are not well. In this work, it is my goal to connect people back to themselves, others, and Earth. There is a lot of trauma in the world today and to heal we must know the effects of trauma and take a more compassionate approach to the ways we work with people and with Earth.

Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐝𝐨: I offer experiential workshops through the Management Assistance Team (MAT), which are available to any member of the organization. I also work with staff to develop new workshops where a need exists. I am currently working with a team on a 4-session series on Diversity & Inclusion. We incorporate adaptive leadership principles when possible. 

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡: The MAT serves as the education and leadership training arm for the organization. Workshops are available to all members, which include state fish and wildlife agencies, provincial fish and wildlife agencies, national conservation organizations, and outdoor industry. Participants are from all levels of these organizations. I am honored to serve with other faculty who work to improve leadership in our conservation community. 

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭: The MAT works with agencies to develop training and schedules already existing workshops as needed. Through the creative use of chat, polls, and other online engagement tools, I work hard to keep participants active. I often provide worksheets for notes and self-reflection. I modify workshops from feedback received from staff and participants. 

When asked to fill in an education gap, I work with staff and other faculty to create appropriate additional training. My current offerings include conflict resolution, cooperative language, internal dialogue, self-care, boundaries, and topics I call Outdoor Life Task (ask me about them at michelle@anavahconsulting.com). 

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: In most states and provinces the fish & wildlife agencies are primarily land managers. Practicing leadership for land and people requires continuous personal growth & development. I have the unique perspective of the agencies, having worked both inside them and through partnerships, so I can both relate and look through a broader lens. The staff of these agencies must bring their best selves in order to care for our precious land, water and wildlife.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: Raising independent adults is like growing a great team and learning how to become a leader of yourself and others. 

My children are both independent and successful adults through parenting as well as their capabilities in overcoming the challenges of autism and an eating disorder. The skills needed for this role are too many to mention.

Archery Trade Association

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝: I created a retail education program for archery retailers to improve business and become more efficient and profitable. 

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡: Archery retailers, fish & wildlife agencies, parks & recreation agencies, conservation organizations, research firms, and a website development company as well as local, national archery organizations and archery enthusiasts. Local connections and partnerships were developed whenever possible because what works in a community comes from within. Connect people and help facilitate a unique local strategy.
    
𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐭: I sought out and learned from the best archery retailers in the industry. During visits and calls, I listened for successes and possible gaps. Educational materials were created and pilot projects were tested on a dozen retailers before national implementation. Website templates were developed to fill an online presence gap. Education was offered through visits, coaching with owners, electronic materials, and a 40,000 square foot educational space at an annual trade show. Evaluation was important, so I collected from all retail contacts, obtained feedback directly and used surveys. Additionally, I organized a group of retailers to evaluate the program as it developed, help promote the program and modify strategy. In three years, over 300 retailers (15% of membership) participated in educational programs where there was no program before. One of our industry’s toughest critics commented this was the best initiative our organization ever offered.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: The industry needed to adjust practices to be more inclusive, efficient, and productive. Because the archery industry is very peer-driven, I knew that the growth of the program had to come from retailer success stories and be promoted by word of mouth. Leadership means taking a back seat, providing the right tools, and motivating others to do their best work.

Director of Community Programs

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝: I worked with a European research firm to collect worldwide archery participation data and contacted international members to discuss needs and begin planning efforts. From information gathered and knowledge of the US industry, I generated an international strategy for growth. 

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡: International member distributors, manufacturers, archery organizations in several countries, and World Archery. 

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐭: I collected background data on each country as well as hired an international research firm to determine participation across countries. I also attended several international events to uncover cultural differences and practices to help determine strategy.  

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: Archery has quite different histories and beliefs across the world, so any strategy had to start with thorough background information on each country. I have been blessed to travel and learn about other cultures through this work. Experiencing other cultures and listening helps pay attention to different ways of thinking.

Director of International Programs

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝: Pioneered a strategy, termed Community Archery Strategy, to mainstream archery in communities through collaboration with state fish & wildlife agencies, parks & recreation agencies, schools, and industry partners. 

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡: State fish & wildlife agency staff to coordinate local efforts with local governments, parks professionals, teachers, archery instructors, local retailers and other local archery enthusiasts. 

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐭: I wrote and received a $114,000 grant to develop case studies of successful archery communities in several locations. The results of this study lead to development of materials to expand programs and fill gaps. This included the creation of an Archery Park Guide to provide technical assistance on archery park development, an Archery Academy to fill instructor gaps and creation of an industry grant program to help more archery communities grow. I also organized and facilitated the industry’s annual Archery and Bowhunting Summit to present successes and help expand the effort nationally. 

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: Archery has been a “back-40” sport for most of its US history. To become more mainstream, we needed tools to be able to safely insert the sport inside local recreation hubs and then work with local communities to develop the skills and talent needed to grow. This effort led to more than 20 new facilities in at least 10 states.

Director of Archery and Bowhunting Programs

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝: I evaluated and assessed potential partners in growing archery and bowhunting nationally. I reviewed archery facility issues that prevented growth and provided advice for improvement 

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡: Archery facility managers, research contractors, national program coordinators, a landscape architect, and industry members. 

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐭: I researched what I could find online and through our membership channels. I hired a research contractor to fill in missing data. I wrote and received an $81,000 grant to inventory archery ranges. I hired a landscape architect to begin developing tools to design better archery ranges. I created a brochure on archery’s safety record as a tool for facility managers. 

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: The sport was missing some basic tools to help promote archery as safe and for facilities managers to better design and operate archery shooting ranges. My work helped uncover the most pressing needs and began the building blocks for industry growth nationally.

Minnesota Department of Natural Resources

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝I managed deer and geese populations in the Twin Cities area, managed the Gores Wildlife Management area (the largest in Minnesota) and assisted in area wetland reclamation projects. 

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡: Public landowners in the Twin Cities Metropolitan area including cities, counties, state and federal agencies and private residents. 

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐭: I organized contact with land managers and coordinated annual wildlife management plans. I wrote permits for animal control activities and coordinated meat distribution to food shelves. 

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: Communities want thriving wildlife populations while minimizing damage to property. I worked to find an acceptable balance and optimum human-wildlife interactions.

Urban Wildlife Manager

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝: I helped landowners, especially orchards, nurseries, and crop growers institute methods for minimizing damage to crops from wildlife. 

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡: Private landowners in the south half of Minnesota. Also coordinated efforts with my northern Minnesota counterpart. 

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐭: I visited landowners complaining about wildlife damage to discuss damage mitigation techniques. Once a plan was established, I would finalize contracts, order materials, and help build fences to agency specifications. 

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: The state manages wildlife populations for the benefit of all people. Sometimes human-wildlife conflict arises, and we must do our best to maintain healthy wildlife populations while not create situations of undue hardship. I had to serve the wildlife and help landowners, all while maintaining a professional and positive impression of the agency.

Wildlife Depredation Specialist

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝: I developed deer management programs for several Twin Cities Metropolitan Area communities. I also assisted with wildlife research projects (including a major deer wounding study), helped manage deer hunting check-in stations, and managed the state’s deer-vehicle collision database. 

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡: Public land managers in the Twin Cities as well as other agency and research station staff. 

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐢𝐭: I worked with communities to discuss deer management plans and then wrote draft plans to be implemented by the public landowners. I collected data on deer control projects and wrote annual reports. I also worked with communities to conduct wildlife attitude surveys. I managed these projects from planning to completion. 

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: Research and data collection is important to helping us maintain healthy wildlife populations across the state. That means we have to account for and project wildlife deaths, births and be vigilant about keeping management plans up to date. New research helps us learn new ways of making sure wildlife and humans can thrive together.

Wildlife Research Biologist

Anavah, my company’s name, is the sweet spot between strength and humility. My work shifts thinking from self-care to capacity building, from surviving to thriving, and from asking for help to sharing gifts.  There are no good or bad relationships with nature and we all must grow in that critical relationship. I value authentic conversation and dialogue. I work hard to create engaging workshops where all are safe to learn together. 

I came to this work as a wildlife biologist where I worked primarily in human-wildlife conflict. Through urban deer management, I ended up in the archery industry where I worked to shift beliefs around where the sport belongs and open it up to a wider audience. When I left the archery industry, I found ecopsychology and Individual Psychology and then I began seeing gaps in our connections to ourselves, to others, and to our beautiful planet. I am working to disrupt the stories of separation. 

I use my experience in uncovering my trauma and mistaken beliefs along with continuous study and communities of practice to expand and improve my work and the way I show up in the world.
