People walk out of meetings with brilliant thoughts

“I should have said something.”

But here is the reality.

Leadership is not built in the moments when everything feels comfortable.

Here’s a simple three-step framework that works - 

Step 1. Ground yourself in intent.
Before speaking, ask yourself a simple question. Am I trying to prove myself right or am I trying to help the team think better? When your intent is contribution, your tone changes.

Step 2. Add perspective, not opposition.
You do not have to challenge people aggressively. A simple line works wonders. “May I offer another perspective?” or “Can I build on that idea?” It keeps the conversation open instead of defensive.

Step 3. Stay curious.
After sharing your thoughts, ask a question. “How are others seeing this?” Curiosity keeps dialogue alive and signals that you are here to think with the room, not win against it.

Most leaders do not need more confidence… they need the courage to honour their perspective.

I turn 41 this year.

Most of what stressed me out at 25
doesn’t even register now.

The “urgent” emails.
The race to be impressive.

You’re choosing one either way.

9️⃣ Happiness isn’t having no problems.
It’s having better problems.

At 40, I don’t want an easy life.

I want a meaningful one.

And meaningful lives come with responsibility, discomfort, and growth.

You’re not behind.

What feels urgent today probably won’t matter in 15 years.

But your health, your integrity, and your relationships will.

Most people aren’t afraid of being alone.

They’re afraid of being still.

Because stillness removes the noise.

No meetings.
No notifications.
No performance.

Just you and your thoughts.

And that’s uncomfortable.

So we stay “productive.”

Back-to-back calls.
Constant Slack pings.
Scrolling between tasks.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth:

If you can’t sit with yourself,
you’ll struggle to lead others.

Because leadership requires:

• Emotional regulation
• Clarity under pressure
• Independent thinking
• Decisions that aren’t crowd-approved

Solitude builds those.

Not isolation.
Not withdrawal.

Intentional time alone.

When I started protecting small pockets of silence:

Morning walks without podcasts.
Journaling without an agenda.
Sitting in a café without reaching for my phone.

I noticed something.

Clarity improved.
Reactivity dropped.
Decisions felt cleaner.

Solitude isn’t loneliness.

In a world addicted to distraction,

No input.

Every year on Women’s Day, I see the same thing on LinkedIn.

Yesterday, I visited my parents.
And learned a lesson, I needed the most. 


It was mid-week.
Middle of work.
Middle of deadlines.

My mom had requested I visit her this Wednesday.

So I blocked a few hours and went.

We had a good lunch and as I was about to leave, she said,
“Why don’t you stay back? Let’s go to the farmers market.”

My first instinct was to tell her how busy I am. 

Hundred errands running in my head.

But something about the way she asked made me stay. 

Around 5 pm, we walked to the weekly farmers market set up a kilometer away.

Local farmers. Fresh produce. Cheerful faces. - a far cry from the high-end supermarkets I generally buy from. 

The stores look so well organised and air-conditioned, but they could never beat the fresh organic produce I saw at the farmers market. 

Vendors greeting my mother, as if they have known each other for years.

One insisting I buy a leafy green - “better than iron supplements” she said. 

A fish seller who knew exactly what my father prefers, packed it without asking twice.

And of course, fresh jasmine flowers on the way out.

27 kilometers from where I live, this felt like a different world……yet familiar! 

I grew up around vegetable and flower farms, my mind seem to associate abundance with freshness. With soil. With simplicity.

The place, people and the abundance gave a deep sense of peace & joy. 

And something else…..

This wasn’t about vegetables.

This was my mother’s love language.

She doesn’t necessarily want efficiency.
She doesn’t want app convenience.
She wants shared moments.

I could easily give her three faster ways to get groceries delivered at her doorsteps. 

But I cannot replace what that walk meant to her.

As leaders, we optimise everything.

Speed.
Systems.
Efficiency.

But relationships don’t deepen through optimisation.

They deepen through presence.

Especially with elderly parents.

These are their golden years.

They don’t need grand gestures.
They need small shared rituals.

Learn their love language.

It might be a market walk.
A cup of tea.
A phone call without multitasking.

Trust me, when you speak in that language, the connection deepens.

And years from now, what you’ll have is less regrets and many fond memories.

It will be like the jasmine flowers you bought on a wednesday evening!

Are you more irritable lately, and even small things trigger you faster?


The delayed email.
The half-prepared team member.
The tone in that message.

Things that normally wouldn’t bother you… suddenly do.

You don’t explode.
You’re still “professional.”

But internally?

→ Your patience is thinner.
→ Your tone is sharper.
→ Your recovery time is longer.

Here’s what most high performers get wrong:

You think it’s about the situation.

It’s not.

It’s about capacity.

When your internal bandwidth is low - sleep debt, decision fatigue, personal transitions, constant pressure, your nervous system starts scanning for threat.

And everything feels like one.

That’s why:

→ Feedback feels like criticism.
→ Questions feel like doubt.
→ Delays feel like disrespect.

You don’t have an anger problem.

You have a recovery problem.

Calm leaders aren’t calm because nothing triggers them.

They’re calm because they reset faster.

Here’s a simple protocol:

1️⃣ Don’t respond immediately, especially if your body is tight.

2️⃣ Change your physiology first (stand up, slow exhale breathing for 3 minutes).

3️⃣ Ask: “What is fact, and what is my interpretation?”

4️⃣ Then respond - briefly.

Irritability is a signal.

Not that you’re failing.

But that you’re carrying too much, too long, without clearing it.

If this is happening often, it’s not a communication issue.

It’s an internal capacity issue.

And that’s fixable.

First, the excitement fades.
Then the energy dips.
Then the work that once felt meaningful starts feeling heavy.

Psychologists have studied this for years.

Burnout doesn’t happen overnight.
It often unfolds in stages.

Here are 12 stages researchers have identified.

Pause and see if you recognise any of them:

→ 1. Compulsion to prove yourself – working harder to show your worth.

→ 2. Working harder and harder – effort becomes constant.

→ 3. Neglecting your own needs – sleep, health, rest take a back seat.

→ 4. Displacement of conflict – ignoring the signs something is wrong.

→ 5. Revision of values – work becomes the only priority.

→ 6. Denial of emerging problems – irritation, cynicism, impatience.

→ 7. Withdrawal – pulling away from people and activities.

→ 8. Behavioural changes – noticeable personality shifts.

→ 9. Depersonalisation – feeling disconnected from yourself.

→ 10. Inner emptiness – a sense of meaninglessness.

→ 11. Depression – exhaustion, hopelessness, numbness.

→ 12. Burnout – physical, emotional, and mental collapse

The difficult part is this:

Most leaders don’t notice these stages while they are happening.

They simply keep pushing.

Because high performers are trained to do exactly that.

Push harder.
Do more.
Hold everything together.

But burnout is not just a productivity problem.

It is a capacity problem.

And the earlier you recognise the signs, the easier it is to change course.

There is another important piece people rarely talk about.

Recovery from burnout is not a purely mechanical or clinical process.

It’s not just about taking a few days off or fixing your calendar.

Often, burnout is a signal that you have lost connection with yourself.

Mindfulness offers a beautiful and deeply therapeutic path back.

A process that helps you slow down, reconnect with your inner world, and gradually restore clarity, energy, and meaning.

In many ways, the real healing begins when you meet yourself again.

And from that place, you don’t just recover.

You step into a wiser, steadier, and more aligned version of your life.

So pause for a moment.

Look at the list again.

Where are you right now?

Have you noticed how the most triggered person in the room often thinks they are the most powerful?

2. This too shall pass

When things go wrong, we tend to believe the moment will last forever.

But life has seasons.

Challenges pass.
So do successes.

This simple reminder helps you stay steady, in both storms and celebrations.

3. Protect your energy

This one he repeats the most.

Live a life that keeps you aligned.

Be mindful of who and what you allow into your space.

Not everyone deserves access to your time, your attention, or your energy.

Because the quality of your life is deeply influenced by the people and environments you surround yourself with.

Yet the older I get, the more I realise how profound they are.

Sometimes wisdom isn’t complicated.

It’s remembering the simple truths, and living by them.

Most people believe change requires;

More discipline.
More determination.
More positive thinking.

So they push harder.

And when they slip back into the same patterns, they blame themselves.

Self-sabotage is rarely a willpower problem.

It’s unprocessed pain.

Old disappointments.
Old rejections.

Not because you are weak.

Positive affirmations over it don’t work.

Outperforming it doesn’t work.

What actually works?

Awareness

To pause.
To observe your thought patterns.
To witness the pain without dramatising it.
To become aware of its nature, and gently release it.

This is not motivational work.

It is spiritual work.

Ancient traditions understood this long before modern psychology did.

For the past 9 years, as part of my Arhatic Yoga and energy psychology studies, I’ve practiced and taught processes designed thousands of years ago, specifically to clear emotional blocks and repetitive patterns.

And here’s what surprises most clients:

Positive transformation is not as hard as they imagined.

Recently, a client told me:

“I thought I had to fight my way to peace. You showed me it could be gentle.”

That’s the point.

Transformation does not require violence toward yourself.

It requires awareness.
Release.
Grace.

The practices are ancient for a reason.

They work.

Here’s some bad business advice.



Last year, I started with an ambitious goal for my business.

A few good friends  - on a similar mission - encouraged me.

And I followed a blueprint laid out by a very successful business coach.

His advice was simple:

Follow this process to the T and you’ll get results.

↳ Viral posts
↳ DM outreach
↳ A well-oiled sales funnel

It’s a great plan.

But only if you align with the ideology behind it.

I pushed through it.

I told myself:
Do what it takes.

Did I get the results? 
Some

Did I follow the plan to the T?
No

Truth is, my heart wasn’t in it.

It wasn’t me.

Everything felt harder than it needed to be.

This year, as I set my goals, I looked at them through a different lens.

When I applied that thinking to my business, something became obvious.

This model didn’t align.

So I did something that felt risky in the online business world.

I simplified.

No complicated funnel.

No TOF–MOF–BOF gymnastics.
No lead magnets.
No endless discovery calls.

Just this:

Simple.
Direct.
Honest.

Yes, the work is still non-negotiable.

But how I do the work matters.

And something interesting happened.

In the past three months,
I’ve already achieved half of my yearly goal.

Was it beginner’s luck?

Or simply alignment?

Time will tell.

But one thing is clear.

It feels lighter.
It feels joyful.
And most importantly, it feels like me.

From years of entrepreneurship, I have learnt, there are more than two ways to succeed. 

Sometimes the best business strategy is not scaling harder.

It’s building a business that matches your nature.

Are you pushing hard and yet life is still not working out - you are not seeing the results? 


Most of us were taught, 

Push harder.
Assert your will.
Make it happen.
Control the outcome.

Success, we were told, belongs to the relentless.

For three decades of my adult life, building, striving, competing, I believed that.

But when I look back honestly, I see a clear pattern.

The phases where I pushed the hardest
were the most stressful.

The most anxious.

The most tightly controlled.

And they produced… average results.

But the seasons where I trusted the process, gave my best without obsessing over outcomes, and refused to let society’s definition of success overpower my inner compass. 

Those were the seasons of breakthroughs.

And sometimes, miracles.

Many years ago, I read this Rumi’s quote:

“When I run after what I think I want, my days are a furnace of stress and anxiety; if I sit in my own place of patience, what I need flows to me, and without pain. From this I understand that what I want also wants me, is looking for me and attracting me. There is a great secret here for anyone who can grasp it.”

That shifted something in me.

Because I had lived both realities.

When I let go of excessive control…
When I softened my grip…
When I trusted life as much as I trusted my effort…

Things aligned in ways I could not have engineered.

This is not about being passive or laziness. 

It’s about aligned action.

Give your best.
Show up fully.
Do the work.

But don’t suffocate the outcome.

So let me ask you:

Where in your life are you forcing results?

Where are you gripping so tightly that there’s no room for grace?

What would happen if you softened, just a little?

You may have a plan for your life.

It is also true that life has a plan for you.

I believe each one of us is born with a purpose.

Sometimes the next level isn’t unlocked by more pressure.

It’s unlocked by surrender & presence.

Real gratitude.

And yet, today the words “thank you” and “I’m grateful” roll off the tongue easily.

I’ve seen people say all the right things…
and within minutes criticise, complain, or undermine others.

I’ve been there myself not too long ago.

That’s not gratitude.
That’s performance.

Gratitude is not a script to make you look evolved.

It is not a mood booster for five seconds.

Gratitude is a thought + a feeling.
It is an emotion.

Most people touch it briefly, and move on.

What makes it powerful is the ability to hold that emotion long enough for it to change you.

When it’s real:

It has weight.
It has humility.
It changes your behaviour.

Here’s what transformed my being, and my results:

1️⃣ Don’t say you’re grateful if you’re not.
Restraint is powerful. Words carry energy.

2️⃣ If something genuinely touches your life - say it, mean it, and act on it.

Let your behaviour prove your gratitude.

Because gratitude without action is just sentiment.

Gratitude lived consistently becomes a vortex of creation.

When you operate from it:

Opportunities expand.
Relationships deepen.
Clarity sharpens.

Having worked with over a thousand professionals, I can tell you this, the ones who rise beyond their own expectations are not necessarily the smartest or the most strategic.

They are the ones who live in genuine gratitude.

If there is one virtue that can elevate both your inner world and your outer results, it is this.

Not hustle.
Not strategy.

GRATITUDE.

But only if you mean it.

The new role isn’t fully yours yet.

The old identity doesn’t fit anymore.

Your confidence feels… inconsistent.

On paper, nothing is “wrong.”

Inside, everything feels uncertain.

This is the most dangerous phase for a leader.

Not crisis.
Not failure.

Transition.

Because in transition, you’re tempted to:

→ Overwork to prove stability
→ Say yes to everything
→ Avoid difficult conversations
→ Rush decisions just to feel control

And those moves quietly cost you authority.

Here’s what I’ve seen after working with high-performing leaders for years:

Transitions don’t damage careers.

Unregulated transitions do.

The leaders who come out stronger don’t push harder.

They do three things differently:

1️⃣ They focus on inner stability before making big moves.

2️⃣ They redefine success for the new season, not the old one.

3️⃣ They build clarity intentionally instead of waiting for it to arrive.

If you are navigating:

→ A promotion
→ A leadership shift
→ A business pivot
→ A divorce or personal upheaval
→ An identity reset in your 40s

Handling it alone is costing you more than you think.

Something interesting I’ve noticed about high performers.

They know how to push hard.

But many of them don’t know how to relax.

The mind keeps running even on weekends.

Thinking about work.
Planning the next week.
Replaying conversations.

But clarity rarely appears in a crowded mind.

It appears when the mind becomes quiet.

Sometimes the most strategic thing you can do…is nothing.

Are you using ChatGPT as your coach or therapist?

Many professionals are.

And honestly, I understand why.

↳ It’s available 24/7.
↳ It doesn’t judge you.
↳ It helps organise your thoughts.
↳ And sometimes, it even asks surprisingly good questions.

I use ChatGPT myself, often.

↳ For thinking.
↳ For writing.
↳ For testing ideas.

But after experimenting with it for coaching-style conversations, I’ve noticed something important.

It’s helpful.

But it has limits.

Here are the pros and cons.

The Pros

→ Instant reflection
Sometimes you just need to get your thoughts out of your head. AI can help structure your thinking quickly.

→ Privacy
You can explore questions without worrying about judgement.

→ Clarity through writing
When you articulate a problem clearly, half the solution becomes visible.

→ Speed
You can get ideas, frameworks, and perspectives instantly.

For quick reflection, it’s a powerful tool.

But here’s where the limitations begin.

The Cons

→ Echo chambers
AI often reflects the logic in your question. If your thinking has blind spots, the response may reinforce them.

→ Confirmation bias
You can unknowingly guide the conversation toward the answer you want.

→ No real challenge
A good coach interrupts your thinking patterns. They question assumptions and point out contradictions.

→ No human awareness
A human coach notices tone, hesitation, emotional shifts, and what you’re not saying. AI cannot sense those layers.

And those layers often hold the real breakthrough.

So here’s how I see it.

AI is a powerful thinking tool.

But deep transformation still requires human awareness, presence, and conversation.

Use AI to organise your thoughts.

If you are navigating a complex decision, a transition, or simply feel stuck in your thinking, sometimes a real conversation helps bring the clarity that reflection alone cannot.

Do your mornings start with anxiety? 


Not dramatic panic.

Just… that familiar heaviness.

The alarm rings.
You open your eyes.

And before you even get out of bed, the mind is already running.

The meeting later today.
That email you still haven’t responded to.
The conversation you wish had gone differently yesterday.

Your body is still lying in bed.
But your mind is already in the office.

I was speaking to a leader recently who said something that stayed with me.

He said,

“Mallika, mornings used to feel fresh. Now they feel like the day has already started chasing me.”

If you relate to that, you’re not alone.

According to research from the American Psychological Association, most professionals report their highest stress levels within the first hour of waking up.

Not at the end of the day.

At the beginning.

Because the mind wakes up carrying yesterday’s unfinished thoughts…
and tomorrow’s imagined problems.

It’s like opening your eyes into a room where ten conversations are already happening.

No wonder mornings feel anxious.

What’s interesting is this:

Many high performers assume this is normal.

Part of success.
Part of responsibility.
Part of adulthood.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

A calm mind is not something reserved for monks in the mountains.

It’s a trainable skill.

And when the mind learns to settle, mornings begin to feel very different.

Quieter.
Clearer.
More spacious.
