When the iPhone launched in 2007,
It wasn’t the most powerful phone on the market.

No physical keyboard.
No copy-paste at launch.
No 3G on day one.

On paper, it was missing “critical requirements.” And yet, it changed everything.

Here’s the mistake people still make when they talk about the iPhone:

They focus on what Apple built.
They miss what Apple refused to build.

Apple didn’t try to win on features.

They didn’t chase edge cases.
They didn’t optimize for existing users.

They redesigned the experience and let the rest of the industry catch up.

That’s the part that project managers should sit with.

The most dangerous project plans look “green.”

In a steering committee meeting last year, a project manager said something that cut through the noise:

“We’re on track. But I wouldn’t bet my name on this plan.”

Everything said fine.
▸ Dashboards were green
▸ Milestones were intact
▸ Risks were documented and politely deprioritized

Yet judgment disagreed.

So instead of asking for more status updates, we did something different.

We asked AI to challenge the plan. Not run it.

We fed it assumptions, historical delivery data, and dependency logic.

What surfaced wasn’t a prediction. It was discomfort.

Maybe we don’t need to scrap the PMO.

Maybe we need to change what we celebrate.

Project managers are often blamed for problems they didn’t create.

Late delivery.
Confused priorities.
Unclear decisions.

It all lands on the PM.

I once watched this happen in real time.

Halfway through a project review, a senior leader said:
“Let’s pause this discussion and take it offline.”

Everyone nodded.
The meeting moved on.

Afterwards, the PM stayed back.
Not to argue.
Not to escalate.
Just to update the plan, so the unresolved decision wouldn’t block delivery.

From that moment on, the project timeline absorbed the ambiguity.

No decision owner.
No trade-off made.

Just a quieter plan and a heavier load on one person.

And when things slipped weeks later?

The question wasn’t
“Why was this decision never made?”

It was
“Why didn’t the PM flag this earlier?”

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:

Most PMs don’t fail at execution. 
They fail at absorbing too much.

They absorb:

unclear strategy
unresolved conflict
leadership indecision
shifting priorities
Quietly.
Professionally.

Until the project cracks — and so do they.

What gets missed is this:
📌 PMs don’t control most decisions
📌 They don’t own the incentives
📌 They rarely have authority equal to accountability

Yet they’re expected to “make it work.”
So, they buffer.

They translate.
They compensate.

And eventually, they become the place where the system hides its mess.

Strong organizations don’t ask PMs to absorb chaos.
They design clarity upstream.

Because when PMs are blamed for everything, it’s usually a sign that no one else is owning enough.
