"Why are you interested in this role?"
Most candidates think this is a throwaway warm-up question.
It’s actually where you win or lose the offer.

Here is the hard truth:
If your answer sounds like "I need a job" or "It’s a famous company," you signal accidental presence. You look like a tourist.

Strategic professionals use this question to do three things:
1️⃣ Create an emotional bond.
2️⃣ Demonstrate they are intentional (not desperate).
3️⃣ Prove they have done the work.

⚠️ But the biggest mistake I see senior professionals make?
They focus entirely on what they want (experience, brand name, pay), rather than what they bring.

You need to reframe your thinking.
❌ Instead of: "I want to gain experience in X..."
✅ Try: "I can help you launch that initiative on time based on my background in..."

❌ Instead of: "This seems like a good opportunity..."
✅ Try: "Your strategy to expand into new markets aligns perfectly with where I’ve had my biggest wins."

2️⃣ Career Fit: Does this advance your trajectory logically?

5️⃣ Success Potential: Do you believe you can actually win here?
6️⃣ Show them why you WANT to be there, not just why you NEED to be there.

Interest is a litmus test for worthiness.

→ If you can’t work productively with your manager and don’t see a way of turning it around, get out.

False Advertising 
→ You sign up for X. You get Y. Eg. The job turns out to be a step back. If it isn’t fixable, it may be an exit moment.

Can’t be Successful 
→ You can see the writing on the wall that there’s no way you can succeed in this role. This is a big one!

Security 
→ Unless you’re in the running for a hefty severance package, if things are going south, making a pre-emptive move makes sense.

Misalignment 
→ You may have realized in this new role that this isn’t the career direction you want to take.

Stellar External Opportunity 
→ You have a fantastic external opportunity that’s hard to ignore.

💬 What "wrong turn" did you make that turned out to be a positive?

You may have a full-time job.
But you can't afford to see yourself only as "an employee who has a job."

In this crazy time we are living in, you are, in effect, a small business. A value business.

Your product is the value you create.

Jobs, contracts, consulting work, advisory roles, board seats. Those aren't different career paths.

They're different channels where your value can be sold.

When you see yourself this way, you start asking different questions:
→ What problems do I really solve?
→ For whom?
→ With what results?
→ What are my proof points?
→ Through which channels could I earn from that?

This isn't about becoming a gig worker.
Most of my clients want full-time roles. That's fine.

But the goal is to become "always earning capable", able to generate income from your skills in more than one way, in most markets.

Your current job? That's one important client.
Not your only bet.

The old model: "If I do good work, I will always have a job."
The new reality: Even if you want a full-time job, you must be able to earn a living without one.

Your safety no longer rests with one employer.
It rests in your ability to earn, in more than one way, in a changing market.

The shift:
❌ I am an employee who has a job
✅ I am a value business with multiple earning channels
❌ My employer is responsible for my career
✅ I am the CEO of my career
❌ I'll figure it out when I need to
✅ I'm building earning capability now, while I have room to move

One question to sit with:
If your role vanished in 90 days, how would you earn?
Not "who would hire me", but "how would I create value for money?"

That answer is your real career security.

That number is your real network.

And for most senior professionals, it's smaller than they think.

Here's the uncomfortable truth:
That VP who championed you 3 years ago? They've moved on. Your old team? Scattered. The relationships you assume are "still there" are fading by the month.

⚠️ Your network has a half-life. And you haven't noticed, or have been ignoring, that it is decaying.

When you're employed and busy, it feels fine. You'll "reconnect when you need to."

But warmth requires maintenance. And cold outreach when you need something is 10x harder than a warm conversation with someone who has a bond with you and already knows your value.

Here's how to reverse the decay:
1. Pick 5 people this week
Not random connections. People who know your work, respect you, and are in positions to hear about opportunities. Send them a genuine note. No ask. Just connection.

2. Make "relationship maintenance" a system
Block at least 30-60 minutes weekly for outreach. Coffee chats. LinkedIn comments on their posts. Birthday messages. Small deposits that compound.

3. Reactivate one dormant relationship per month
Someone you haven't talked to in 2+ years. "I was thinking about our work on [X project] and wanted to reconnect." That's all it takes.

4. Shift from "networking" to "being useful"
Share an article. Make an introduction. Congratulate wins. The best networkers give before they ask.

Your network is either growing or dying. There's no maintenance mode.

If you want to advance, here's what you need to do: 

1. Make Things Better 
Make a difference through positive impact, not ego. Record your wins, then look forward: what opportunities do you see to create lasting change?

2. Self-Advocate & Seek Feedback 
Hard work alone won't get you promoted. Advocate for yourself with confidence. Seek critical feedback with humility. Act on it. Repeat.

3. Escape the Career Traps 
Recognize when you're stuck: accidental specialization, bad fit roles, pigeonholing, stagnation. See the trap. Decide it's worth escaping. Create your exit plan.

4. Don't Stall in Bad Situations 
You know when things aren't working. Bad job fit. Toxic environment. Unsalvageable boss relationship. Cut the time between noticing and acting.

5. Solve for Self-Sabotage 
Identify behaviours holding you back. Look for patterns in feedback and negative outcomes. What's getting in your way? Address it.

6. Build Communication & Story-Telling Skills 
Great leaders communicate vision, strategy, problems, and solutions through stories. Develop this skill: it leaves lasting impressions and accelerates advancement.

7. Build Sight Lines 
Being your boss's best-kept secret kills careers. Build visibility for your work. Cultivate relationships. Find champions. If they don't see you, they can't promote you.

8. Be Someone People Can Count On 
Earn a reputation for reliability, results, and taking care of people. When others know they can count on you to lead and deliver, everything becomes easier.

9. Create External Profile 
Internal performance isn't enough if higher-ups think you're invisible externally. Polish your LinkedIn. Network. Stay plugged into your industry. Show them they can't take you for granted.

The truth? Career advancement follows a formula. And is empowered by systems.

Most people just don't know it.

Now you do.
