Tom Rath identifies some types of friends as must haves

1. Builder

Builders are great motivators, always pushing you toward the finish line. They continually invest in your development and genuinely want you to succeed- even if it means they have to go the extra mile for you.

2. Champion

Champions stand up for you and what you believe in. They are the friends that sing your praises. Every day, this makes a difference in your life. They have your back too. 

3. Collaborator

A collaborator is a friend with similar interests. When you talk with a collaborator, you are on familiar ground, and this can serve as the foundation for a lasting relationship. Indeed, in those conversations, you often find you have similar ambitions in work and life. 

4. Companion

A companion is always there for you, whatever the circumstances. You share a bond that is virtually unbreakable. Whenever anything big happens in your life - good or bad, they are one of the first persons you call.

5. Connector

A connector is a bridge builder who helps you get what you want. Connectors get to know you - and introduce you to others. This increases your network dramatically and gives you access to newfound resources.

6. Energizers

Energizers are your "fun friends" who always give you a boost. You have more positive moments when you are with these friends. You are more likely to laugh in the presence of an energizer. If you want to relax and have a good time or need to get out of a rut, call an energizer.

7. Mind Openers

Mind Openers are the friends who expand your horizons and encourage you to embrace new ideas, opportunities, cultures, and people. These friends broaden your perspective on life and make you a better person. 

8. Navigators are the friends who give you advice and keep you headed in the right direction. You go to them when you need guidance, and they talk through the pros and cons with you until you find an answer.

Whenever I find that a great authority on life has a view on an aspect of life that syncs with mine.

Most recently, it happened when I read the views on Naval Ravikant on self-care

Here goes:

He says - 

My number one priority in life, above my happiness, above my family, above my work is my own health. It starts with my physical health. Second, it's my mental health. Third, it's my spiritual health. Then, it's my family's health. 
Then, it's my family's wellbeing. After that I can go out and do whatever I need to do with the rest of the world. 

Further, he goes on to say:

Because my physical health became my number one priority, then I could never say I don't have time. In the morning, I work out and however long it takes is how long it takes. I do not start my day until I've worked out. I don't care if the world is imploding and melting down, it can wait another thirty minutes till I'm done working out.

It's pretty much every day. There are a few days where I've had to take a break because I'm travelling, or I'm injured or sick or something. I can count on one hand the number of breaks I take every year.

Personally, I simply love these priorities. We always say that we cannot pour from an empty cup.

Imagine you are sitting brewing your morning coffee.

Suddenly you get a call that the country you are in has been invaded.

You switch on the TV set and find that 100,000 troops and 700 tanks are involved.

On 2nd August 1990, Viraja Maganti faced this in Kuwait when Iraq invaded.

And her wedding was just over a month away. 

She spent 26 harrowing days, in the final stages crossing multiple countries before boarding a flight for Mumbai. 

In the midst of all this, Viraja recalls that it was the courage, calmness and Emotional Intelligence of her father that saw them through.

Hats off to her too, as a mere girl of 22 truly passing through a baptism of fire. 

She has captured all this in her book Escape From Kuwait. The book reflects some of the finest manifestations of Emotional intelligence at its best. 

I found the book to be a gripping, edge of the seat read.

Speed gives us a definite competitive edge. Unfortunately, there are some things that slow us down.

Divya enlightened me on how to cope with them.

1. Get rid of multi-tasking. 

Noticed how too many apps running slow down your phone? Or too many windows open slow down your computer?

2. Bring clarity into your life. 

Very simply, clarity = speed. Confusion = slow down

3. Take small decisions fast. It leaves you time for the bigger decisions.

4. Never wait for a perfect time to do anything. The right time is now

5. Keep a vital fact in mind. Slow people think too much. Fast people do more

6. Get rid of emotional baggage. We always move faster when we are lighter.

7. Learn to embrace the boring work. 

This is a difficult one. And yet it yields tremendous dividends. 

8. Distractions are your biggest enemy

Refrain from scrolling when doing important tasks

9. Let go of what does not make you happy

Ruminating slows us down. 

10. Success doesn't come in a day. Opting for speed can be done in a day though

11. Adopt a "start now" mindset. 

If something takes two minutes or less, do it right away

12. Keep your ego small and learning bigger. The faster you learn, the faster you move. 

13. Be honest with yourself

Stress is highly dangerous. 

It attacks health in the short term and can be fatal in the long term.

So when Dr Aditi Nerurkar, Harvard Stress Expert, and Mel Robbins, top Life Coach, have a conversation about it, what emerges is worth paying attention to.

The first step is to understand what stress actually is so that you know you have control over the situation. 

You have to think of your stress as an on and off switch, where you control the response. Whenever somebody does something that upsets you, simply tell yourself "Let them." 

You will find it wonderfully liberating !!

The moment you say "Let Them", you are signalling to your brain that it is okay: This isn't worth stressing about. You are telling your amygdala to turn off. You are resetting that stress response by detaching from the negative emotion you feel. 

Curious about the entire process? Here it is:

The moment anything happens that stresses you out, say "Let Them". Put yourself in pause. Then say "Let Me" and take a breath.

"Let Me" take another breath. Slow your stress response. Calm your body and brain down. Take control and regain your power.

I found this works. So does somatic experiencing. Extremely powerful. Let us discuss that in a separate post.

7 is a number I have adored since childhood.

I have always been fascinated by it and explored its mysteries.

This has brought me to study one of the most wildly successful class of people in the world. Who? You guessed it - the Jewish people !!

From Steven Silbiger, I shall list 

-7 fascinating facts of Jews vis a vis America
-7 reasons why they are so incredibly successful

7 fascinating facts:

1. The percentage of Jewish households with income greater than $50,000 is double that of Non Jewish households

2. The percentage of Jewish households with income less than $20,000 is half that of Non Jews

3. Forty percent of the top 40 of the Forbes 400 richest Americans are Jewish

4. One third of American multimillionaires are tallied as Jewish

5. Twenty percent of professors at leading universities are Jewish

6. Forty percent of partners in the leading law firms in New York and Washington are Jewish

7. Thirty percent of American Nobel Prize winners in science and 25 percent of all American Nobel winners are Jewish

So what are the 7 factors that make them so successful? The belief in and practice of the following principles:

1. Understand that real wealth is portable; it is knowledge

2. Take care of your own and they will take care of you

3. Successful people are professionals and entrepreneurs

4. Develop your verbal confidence

5. Be selectively extravagant but prudently frugal

6. Take pride in individuality: encourage creativity

7. Be psychologically driven to prove something

I am totally floored by this and shall surely be actively exploring this.

4. Develop

There is immense anxiety in many teenagers

And in young adults too. 

That is disturbing because they are the future of society.

It actually does not have to be that way. 

Let us examine. 

Let us say somebody is 19 years old. 

They spend 7 years :

-Meeting mentors 
-Gathering experience
-Doing stuff

At 26, when they find they have not reached where they wanted to, they assume their life has been wasted and they have been a failure.

Now, this is not really true because:

1. At 26, they still have a long life ahead of them
2. They have consistently been building themselves up, even if results are not immediately apparent. 

Also, they are subject to immense pressure:

-Peer pressure
-Societal pressure
-Parental pressure
-Sibling Rivalry

What should they do?

1. Surround themselves with the right people
2. Put on those noise cancelling headphones and listen to positive stuff

They need to remember:

-Time is on their side
-They are not lost in life, they are just early in the process

Everything can be figured out.

We have all heard of mental models

Have you heard of an anti mental model?

I got this from Peter Hollins and I found it quite fascinating.

I shall give you just three examples:

1. Say you want to improve your swimming. You could keep in mind each technique that improves your swimming (long strokes). But you could also think about the things a terrible swimmer does and avoid those at all costs (avoid short strokes) You would get a similar end result, and possibly a better one because you would focus on removing your weak points.

2. Do you want to be a better friend? Instead of creating a list of excellent friend attributes, you could start by creating a list of things you would hate people to do to you and avoid those. This may actually yield even better results.

3. Do you want to be more productive? Instead of asking yourself to be more productive, ask yourself what sabotages your productivity and make it your goal to avoid those. 

Achieving a host of positive goals does not matter if a glaring negative one exists. Often, what matters in life is the lack of any negatives rather than the presence of positives.

We often get into a situation where people find it convenient to complain.

And that helps neither us nor them.

So what do we do? 

Jeff Keller says we need to highlight the 3 drawbacks of complaining.

So here's what we need to tell them.

Complaints work against you in three ways.

1. Firstly, nobody wants to hear negative news

2. Second, complaining reinforces your own pain and discomfort. So, why keep replaying painful, negative memories?

3. Thirdly, complaining, by itself, accomplishes nothing and diverts you from the constructions you could be taking to improve your situation. 

90% don't care about our problems, and 10% are glad we have them. 

It is always my endeavor to provide you how to dealing with your challenges - big or small.

Marie had some observations to make which I quite agree with

Many people come to coaches with (among other issues) two major issues:

A.  Time management

B.  Wrong eating

She suggests some steps that are, on the face of it very simple, and yet immensely powerful. 

1. Eliminate media consumption

Eliminate all media including:

-Social media
-TV
-Online videos
-Magazines
-Catalogs 
-Podcasts
-News

Do it till you are able to get the situation under control. 

A simple mantra is "Create before you consume".

A lot of time can be put to use productively through simple measures

-Ten minutes of meditation can give you a stronger brain, and experience more clarity, insights and creativity
-A fifteen minute home workout can create more energy and strength
-Twenty five minutes of writing can help write a book

2. Break out of your inbox.

Check your mail a limited number of times in a day. For sure, do not check it the first thing on rising.

Eliminate notifications like dings, buzzes, swooshes or visual pop ups.

3. Eat better and cheaper

The processed food that is frequently ordered is very unhealthy, full of nitrates and trans fats. Home cooked food is healthier and cheaper. Always a better option.

#Class

Class is spelt out very subtly. Not by wearing luxury watches or a designer outfit. That can be bought by anybody with money.

Class is hardwired into people and is an integral part of their breeding. The discerning can spot it right away. 

1. How you act on entering an unfamiliar room.

The average person frantically scans the room for a familiar face. The person with class takes a deep breath and then deliberately approaches a fixed person in the room.

2. Handling the mobile phone

Many think that putting their phones face down on the table during a meeting is good enough. It is not. With classy people, their phones cannot be seen. They go into their pockets or their bags. 

3. How you handle a compliment

The average either discount the compliment or make a counter compliment.
The classy accept it graciously

4. How you speak to people who can do nothing for you

Classy people treat everybody with dignity - even chauffeurs, valets and doorkeepers

5. How you eat.

Classy people never talk with their mouths full. In fact, they fully put down their cutlery before speaking

6. How you leave a conversation

Neither abruptly nor in a lingering fashion. A > Give a natural pause B > State a genuine reason for leaving C > Exit with warmth

7. How you carry your bag

Whether it is a ladies handbag or a briefcase of either ladies or gents, they do not insecurely clutch it. they put it down confidently. 

8. How you react to luxury

Average people react with awe. Some with a fake disdain. Classy people give it the attention it merits. Nothing more. Nothing less.

9. What you laugh at 

Classy people always laugh appropriately and NEVER at anybody's expense.

10. How you sit when nobody is watching. 

Maintain an elegant posture even when no one is watching.

All this is very important. It shapes the opinion of people who matter. The perception can make the difference between a deal happening and not happening.

This was a Masterclass in storytelling, in Presentation skills. I was literally hooked from the beginning to the end here. The stories from mythology to the stories from the corporate world. The way everything was weaved together to lead us to the subject of Transitions, Parenting and Relationships. Finally, the clear and simple wisdom which were completely driven home. Dear Sameer, truly appreciate your session last night about life. Here are some of my insights.

Corporate: 
The WHY is most important. Being sustainable that you outlast the competition is the actual point not only by organizations but individuals. Targeting only being #1 brings you to a false sense of security that you had arrived already. And organizations/individuals stop evolving, become complacent & later obsolete.

Personal:
I felt drawn to Sameer’s story because of his authenticity & humility. I resonate with transitions being more of redefining your identity. Me being a new parent, fully agree that how i define myself has shifted dramatically in how I show up in my relationships.

Yesterday's YML-CMC Session titled "Challenges Faced by New Coaches" was an excellent learning opportunity. I could relate the experiences shared by the facilitators and participants. Also, I got insights on many concepts, especially about the monetizing the Coaching Activities.

When I was a teenager, whenever any adversity befell me, my brother would tell me "Adversity builds character"

My vocabulary was fully developed, so I understood that.

However, my prefrontal cortex was not , so I had a difficult time controlling myself around adversity. 

Years later, I was mature enough to take some life lessons from Susan Jeffers (truly inspirational person) So here goes:

"Barn's burnt down - now I can see the moon" Zen Master Masahide.

Positive thinking to its extreme, isn't it? No ranting. No cursing the system, people, God. Just calm acceptance. 

"If we can embrace the good that can come from whatever life hands us, we have come a long way in learning how to embrace uncertainty." 

Robin Silverman had her home totally destroyed in a flood. Still, she wrote a book called "The Ten Gifts" Through all the difficult times, she chose to find the many "gifts" that allowed her to create a life filled with peace and meaningful activity. 

Al Gore, when he let go of a long held dream of becoming President Of the United States said "As for the battle that ends tonight, I do believe, as my father once said, that no matter how hard the loss, defeat might serve as well as victory to shape the soul and let the glory out. 

Indeed, there is IMMENSE power in letting go. When we realize that, our life transforms.
