Ultimately, you have to take responsibility.

Yes, folks I know nobody is coming to save me. I need to do what I need to do.

I need Emotional Intelligence

Self Awareness - I need to know myself
Self Regulation - I need to be totally in charge of myself
Social Awareness - Knowledge of what is happening around me
Social Skills - Ability to deal with people

Isn't it simple? The what often is. The how is where the hard work kicks in. 

Emotional Intelligence can be read about in a book over a matter of a few days.

It plays out in our lives across our lifespans - and we never stop learning.

Coffee does a lot of things for us

Not hitting the snooze button on the alarm is a phenomenal act of self-regulation !! 

So what is the big deal? 

We shall examine. 

Let us take something from Mel Robbin's "The 5 Second Rule"

Mel had a client called Stephen who would consistently hit the snooze button. 

He took a resolute step and texted Mel:

I watched your Tedx speech on youtube. Truly inspiring. I'll be waking up at 6:30 tomorrow morning and tossing the covers off. No snooze.

And what happened? Let us say it in Stephen's words

For the sake of brevity, we shall skip the terrible situation Stephen was in before taking this step (and it was really, really bad !!)

Stephen said:

I guess if I were to sum it all up for you, it would be this. I love helping others and I've long had visions of doing that through business by sharing knowledge, wealth and resources with others to allow them to pursue their passions. As of September 12th the snooze button has been broken and autopilot no longer exists. Watch out world, here I come and I am bringing friends.

When we take a resolute step to do something good and powerful, doors just keep opening and success builds on itself.

85 percent

The Harvard Business review reported that 85 percent of their executives believe their organizations are bad at diagnosing problems.

That is because root cause analysis does not happen.

As in companies, so also in life.

Peter explains.

He says that we have to keep drilling down in our "whys" till we reach the root cause.

The immediate answer is called the proximate cause
The last answer is called the ultimate cause.

Peter provides an example.

He says somebody's (let's call him Hal) driving license gets suspended. The traffic court has been waiting for Hal to respond to a series of speeding violations, but he has never complied. A warrant for Hal's arrest is issued, the police go over to his home, bust down his door, and throw him in jail for a long weekend.

Why is Hal in Jail?

Because there was an arrest warrant out for him (proximate cause)

Why? Because he hadn't responded in court to his multiple speeding violations. 

Why? Because he exceeded the speed limit nine times and got caught

Why? Because he had a need or impulse to go superfast on the highway

Why? Because he never had a set of boundaries as a child and thought he could do whatever he wanted without consequences. 

What do we derive from this? Something very simple - and yet overlooked probably 85 percent of the time - the ultimate cause.

Multiple studies carried out on longevity show something surprising. 

The leading factor is not our diet.

It is not our exercise.

It is our social connection. 

Why so ? 

1. It lowers stress hormones

Social interaction reduces our cortisol levels. Cortisol, which which stresses us, harms our immunity.

2. It provides emotional support

It does so by fostering healthy behaviors. Like healthier eating habits. And healthier adherence to medication.

3. Provides accountability

When we have people we are accountable to, we take better care of ourselves. 

4. Boosts cognitive health

Social interactions stimulate the brain and arrest cognitive decline and the onset of dementia

5. Strengthens the immune system

Serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins are powerful stress busters and therefore boost immunity

The good news is that in person interaction is also good for business.

A. It builds stronger relationships

-In person interactions help read body language and facial expressions, crucial for relationship building

-It allows for in-depth conversations that build rapport and trust. 

B. Creates new opportunities

-The factors mentioned above help create more opportunities. Because this allows our mental faculties to function in top gear.

I have first hand experienced these benefits in interacting in person with people. I would highly recommend it.

The YML CMC session led by Pritam Das was a very useful one that added a lot of value.

We discussed at length the capabilities of different AI apps, which in today's context is so important. 

Two very important benefits are that:

-Leads can be maintained
-Contact details can immediately be uploaded

Non-responsive leads can be relegated to long term nurturing

Three major learnings were 

1 > How to compare and contrast different AI Apps
2 > Setting up systems for continuous contact
3 > Highlighting processes

Yesterday’s Session by Pritam Das was insightful about AI , business tools , automation - 
how and what tools and technologies we shall use smartly to increase the productivity and save time for repetitive tasks . The best thing for me was sharing the demo of back end work for MML , so it was so relatable to understand.

The Mind Body connection and stress are constant subjects of discussion.

More so because to bust stress, we need to tap into the mind body connection.

So what do people do to tackle it? 

-Some go to fancy spas
-Some go to fancy resorts
-Some use AI driven gadgets

The good news is that none of this is required. 

Dr Aditi Nerurkar, Harvard Stress Expert, tells us about a simple technique that costs nothing.

A 5 second technique called Stop-Breathe-Be

Stop

When you are about to start a task, just tell yourself STOP. Bring your body to a full and complete stop. Pause and be as motionless as possible and be aware of your stillness in the moment. 

Breathe

While you breathe all the time, be aware of your breath. Take one deep breath in and let it all the way out.

Be

Ground yourself and be present. Simply become aware of yourself before you proceed to your task? 

Why is breath so important? It is the ONLY involuntarily bodily function that we can regulate voluntarily. 

This has been empirically validated extensively and it works.

Some events can affect people for a lifetime.

Like Black Swan Events.

This term has been coined by Nassim Nicholas Taleb.

Taleb uses Black Swan as a metaphor to describe unpredictable events that create a massive change in:

-perception
-perspective
-understanding

Yet, he himself says that it is something that should not change perception or accepted knowledge. The reason is that it is an anomalous outlier. 

It must only create an awareness of possibilities, not make the spectre of recurrence loom large. 

As a brief example, a lightning bolt striking a nearby tree can be frightening. We may equip some houses with grounding rods.

-Will we stay indoors at all times ?
-Or carry a metal shield with us at all times?
-Or move to the desert. 

We will not !! 

The third characteristic of the Black Swan event needs to be guarded against.

So, what are the three characteristics? 

-It is a big surprise
-It has a major effect
-People attempt to rationalize it after it happens

This third part is dangerous because :

-It fuels panic and volatility
-It creates hindsight bias. People may believe that future Black Swan events can be predicted using standard models
-It may disrupt routine risk management.

What does this highlight? Our heads and hearts have to be aligned. Emotions and rational thoughts must be in harmony.
