When I started my business, I didn't have formal training in web design.

There was no roadmap — just me, a computer, and a stubborn belief that I could figure it out.

The early years were messy.

The doubts were loud.

And because I didn't have a university degree, I often felt like I had something to prove.

I worked harder than I probably needed to.

Learned faster than I felt comfortable.

And even when clients were happy, I still questioned whether I was doing enough.

There wasn't a single moment when confidence suddenly appeared.

It built slowly — in small, quiet ways.

One finished project at a time.
One returning client.
One referral.

The self-doubt never completely disappeared.

It just got quieter as I learned to work alongside it.

Looking back now, I can see that those years shaped the kind of business owner I became - resourceful and resilient.

And maybe that's the part no one tells you at the beginning: confidence isn't about never doubting yourself - it's about continuing anyway.

No, AI Won’t Replace You - But It Might Rescue You

When Jordan got his promotion at Red Bull, it felt like life coming full circle in a way I couldn't have planned if I tried.

I was out having lunch with friends when my phone rang, and it was Jordan. You know those moments in life when you remember exactly where you were and what you were doing? This was one of them.

He said, "Mum, I got the job."

And without thinking, the first words that came out of my mouth were, "Oh no!"

I didn't mean it - it just slipped out, because deep down I knew what it meant. It meant he'd be moving to Melbourne.

But I quickly caught myself and told him how proud and happy I was for him. It took everything in me not to cry while we were still on the phone. We talked for a few minutes, I congratulated him again, and when I hung up, the tears came.

That was the moment it really hit me: he was about to spread his wings for real.

Red Bull's slogan is "gives you wings", and here was my son - the same little boy I'd raised on my own, the one I'd built my whole life around - now taking flight in the most literal way.

He was leaving home, chasing his dreams, building a life that was completely his. And as hard as it was to let him go, it also made me realise something beautiful: he didn't just grow up - he grew wings.

Running a small business is already hard enough.

What makes it harder than it needs to be is having to figure everything out from scratch - what to say, where to start, how to structure things, what matters and what doesn't.

That constant decision-making is exhausting.

Over time, I've created a small library of practical guides and templates to make some of that easier - things you can use straight away instead of staring at a blank screen or second-guessing yourself.

If your business feels heavier than it should, this is a good place to start.

If you're doing everything yourself, it can feel like the only way forward is to push harder.

But most of the time, effort isn't the problem.

It's friction.

Too many small decisions.

Too many half-finished thoughts.

Too many things you're carrying around in your head because there's nowhere else for them to live.

That kind of mental load adds up fast.

Not because you're failing - but because running a business this way is exhausting.

And when everything starts to feel messy and heavy, it's usually a sign that something needs tightening - not pushing.

Most people try to save time in business by working faster.

That usually just creates more pressure.

Real time savings come from removing friction -
the small things that make everything harder than it needs to be.
Explaining your offer over and over.

Manually answering the same questions.

Fixing things that should already be clear.

That's why website structure, content clarity, and practical tools like Al overlap in my work.

There are different ways of solving the same problem: making your business easier to run.

Three people visited your profile yesterday. 

None reached out.

Think about the last time you researched someone before hiring them.
You landed on their profile looking for one thing. Can they solve my specific problem?

If the answer wasn't obvious in five seconds, you kept looking.
Most profiles fail this test immediately.

Five different services are listed. Strategy, coaching, consulting, speaking, workshops. The visitor can't tell which one applies to their situation.

Everyone gets targeted. 
Startups, enterprises, nonprofits, executives, teams. Nobody feels like the right fit.

The headline stays vague. "Helping leaders transform organisations" tells someone nothing about what actually changes.

The About section reads like a resume. 

Twenty years of experience, multiple certifications, impressive achievements. 

The visitor came with a problem and got a biography.

Profiles that convert visits into conversations do three things:
State one clear problem solved for one type of person. The headline answers "what do you do and who do you help" in plain language.

Focus the About section on their world, not your credentials. Their challenge, your solution, how to start.

Make the next step obvious. Calendar link in the headline. Another link in About. Featured post explaining how to work together.

Someone visits your profile is interested. 

They either see an obvious path forward or they leave confused.

Clarity converts. Complexity loses.

Your DMs sound like sales pitches.

Think about your inbox right now.

Dozens of messages from people asking for "just 15 minutes" or offering to "share insights" about your business.

Delete without reading.

Decision makers do the same thing to your messages.

Most outreach fails in the first sentence because it reads like every other pitch. The pattern is obvious, and the response is automatic deletion.

Messages that get replies sound fundamentally different.

Notice something specific about recent work. Not job title or company size, but actual output someone created or shared.

Ask one simple question that takes 30 seconds to answer. Something the person would actually enjoy talking about.

Make it about curiosity, not positioning for a pitch. 
No frameworks mentioned. 
No offerings listed. 
Just genuine interest in their work.

Example:
"Saw your post on restructuring sales comp. The quarterly reset approach is interesting. What made you move away from annual structures?"

The message notices specific work and asks about it.

The difference between 5% and 50% response rates isn't better copywriting.

It's whether the message sounds like a human who noticed their work and got curious.

Most outreach is an interview disguised as conversation or a pitch disguised as curiosity.

Real interest gets real replies.

They replied to your DM. 

Now what?

Think about the last time someone responded to your outreach.

Actual interest. Real engagement. Then the conversation dies because the next message pushes too hard.

Most people get a reply and immediately pitch a call. The momentum stops.

Getting replies is half the equation. Converting replies into conversations is the other half.

When someone responds, continue the actual conversation first. Ask a follow-up question about what they shared. Show genuine interest in the answer.

Two or three real exchanges build rapport. The person starts to see you as someone curious about their work, not someone running a sales process.

Then suggest a conversation naturally. "I'd enjoy hearing more about this over coffee" or "happy to continue this conversation live if you're up for it."
Discovery calls trigger sales resistance. Coffee or conversation feels collaborative.

Most DM sequences fail because they move from reply to pitch in one message. 

The person who just showed interest suddenly feels sold to.

Build the relationship through the messages first. 

Three to five genuine exchanges. Then suggest talking live when it feels natural.

The goal isn't speed to calendar. 

The goal is turning interest into trust before asking for time.
