I'll never forget the dream job I thought I had locked down. And then ghosted. 


Four rounds of interviews. Met with the hiring manager twice. Presented to the team. 

Even had a final conversation with the VP where he said, "We're really excited about bringing you on board. You'll hear from us this week."

Four weeks later, No call. No email. Not even a generic rejection.

I followed up once. Then twice. Then realized I was chasing people who clearly didn't respect my time enough to send a two-sentence email.

Here's what made it worse: I'd turned down other interviews because I thought this was a done deal.

That experience taught me something I'll never forget: How a company treats you during the hiring process is exactly how they'll treat you as an employee.

And companies wonder why they can't attract top talent.

Here's the reality: Every person you ghost tells 10 other people about the experience.

If you're hiring: Send the email. Even if it's a template. Even if it's bad news.

Candidates deserve basic human decency, not radio silence.

And if you're job searching: Remember that ghosting tells you everything you need to know about that company.

My client Jessica came to me after being passed over for a promotion three times in two years.

Same manager every time. Same excuse every time.

“You’re not quite ready yet.”

Meanwhile, she was training the people getting promoted over her. Running projects her manager took credit for.

She’d spent two years trying to prove herself to people who’d already decided not to see her value.

“Maybe I’m just not as good as I think I am,” she told me.

Here’s what I told her: You’re not the problem. You’re just at the wrong table.

We built her exit strategy. Updated her resume. Optimized her LinkedIn. Targeted companies where her skills would actually be valued.

Six weeks later, she had two offers. Both paid more than her current role. Both came with the title she’d been chasing for two years.

She took the better one and handed in her notice.

Her manager’s reaction? Genuine shock.

“We were planning to promote you next quarter.”

Sure they were.

Here’s what I’ve learned: The people who never saw your value don’t suddenly see it until they’re about to lose you. And by then it’s too late.

If you’ve spent years being overlooked and undervalued, stop trying to prove yourself to people who’ve already decided not to see it.

Find the people who already do.

My client didn’t become more talented when she left. She just finally found somewhere that could see what was already there.

If you're building with AI, here are 12 core concepts you need to know:

1/ LLM (Large Language Model)

Massive neural networks trained on billions of words to predict and generate human-like text.
 
Used in: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, GitHub Copilot

2/ Tokens

AI reads in chunks, not characters. "Unbelievable" might be 3 tokens. Every token costs compute and money.
 
Used in: Model planning, API pricing, context management

3/ Prompt Engineering

How you ask matters as much as what you ask. I've gotten completely different outputs from the same model just by restructuring one sentence.
 
Used in: Content creation, business automation, image generation

4/ Transformers

The architecture powering modern AI. Self-attention lets the model weigh which words matter most in a sentence: "bank" means something different near "river" vs "money."
 
Used in: All modern LLMs, Google Search

5/ AI Agents

Models that plan, take actions, and loop back on results without a human clicking next at every step.
 
Used in: Workflow automation, research, multi-step tasks

6/ Context Window

Think of it as working memory. The bigger the window, the more text the model can hold and reason over at once. GPT-4 started at 8K tokens. Some models now handle 1M+.

7/ Multimodality

One model handling text, images, audio, and video. You can describe a photo, transcribe speech, and generate a report in a single pipeline.
 
Used in: Visual search, video analysis, accessibility tools

8/ RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation)

Instead of relying only on training data, RAG fetches relevant info before answering. Helps a lot with accuracy and keeping things current.
 
Used in: Enterprise chatbots, customer support, documentation tools

9/ AI Alignment

Teaching models to behave in ways that are actually safe and useful. This is arguably the hardest problem in the field.

10/ Embeddings

Text turned into numbers that capture meaning. "Dog" and "puppy" end up closer together than "dog" and "spreadsheet."
 
Used in: Search engines, recommendation systems, document comparison

11/ Fine-tuning

Training a general model on specific data so it gets good at one thing. A base model knows everything broadly. A fine-tuned one knows your domain.
 
Used in: Medical diagnosis, custom chatbots, industry tools

 
12/ Hallucination

AI doesn't know what it doesn't know. It fills gaps with plausible-sounding, sometimes completely wrong answers. This is why human review still matters.
 
Impact: Trust, accuracy, business decisions

The core issue is that:
Most companies optimize for efficiency. But the best ones… 
optimize for profit.

I recently read 'Be a Sequoia, Not a Bonsai' by Nicolas Darveau-Garneau.

The core idea is simple: Sequoias prioritize profitable growth. Bonsai obsess over efficiency.

That shift changes how you approach:
• Customer quality vs. customer volume
• CAC vs. actual profitability
• How marketing and finance work together
• Brand as a long-term growth lever
• Lifetime value as a strategic priority

I worked with Nick when I was at Google, and I went into it curious whether the book would reflect how he actually thinks.

And it does. 

What stood out to me is that these are the principles I saw applied inside high-performing companies and brands.
They force you to ask whether you’re optimizing what actually matters.

So you're probably optimizing for the wrong thing…. And your CFO already knows it.

So here’s the real question for you growth leaders out there:

Be so deeply invested in your own growth
that you don’t have time to keep score.

Most people waste years doing the opposite.
Chasing validation. Watching what everyone else is doing.

Instead of showing up to learn and grow.

The breakthrough?
It’s simpler than you think.

Comparing yourself to others says:
→ Watch, judge, measure yourself against them

Investing in yourself says:
→ Focus inward, notice your own gaps, fill them

One blocks growth.
The other fuels it.

When you’re stuck comparing:
❌ You compete instead of connect

❌ You stop learning when ego takes over
