The answer is not to minimize wrongness.

It's to minimize the COST of being wrong.

So you can cycle through many, many wrong answers without dying.

That's the highest-odds path to getting to the *right* answer.

The alternative is buying a lottery ticket.

Run faster, Run longer, and/or Run in unique directions...

1/3 gives you a fighting chance.

2/3 gets you above 50% odds of making it.

3/3 creates an inevitability of success.

"Grass roots" growth sounds romantic.

It isn't.

Most of us are playing an old-school, economies-of-scale game.

Which means we start in a painful (i.e., un-romantic) unit economics hole.

The best (and, arguably, only) path out?

Volume.

And then a careful *leveraging* of that volume.

The best way to achieve volume?

Taking big swings early.

To me, that's romance.

The path to The Goal is the inverse of The Goal.

Reduce optionality so you can later maximize it.

Concentrate bets so you can later diversify them.

Channel negative emotions (jealousy, comparison, anger) so you can later jettison them.

Etc.

Of course this only works if you...

1. know *when* to flip the switch (timing is everything)
2. are able to *actually* flip that switch (many refuse to)
3. *avoid psychological disaster* along the way (which is mostly a function of how you execute on 1 and 2)

Purists get to be admired.

Strategic compromisers get to win.

I led business development efforts at Imbellus (acquired by McKinsey & Company + Roblox in Dec 2020).
Imbellus was an interdisciplinary team of learning scientists, game developers, artists, data scientists, and AI engineers. We built assessments that measured how people think, not just what they know. At Imbellus, I worked alongside an amazing team to help enterprise companies, government entities (including Department of Defense), and schools, districts, and state education agencies understand, pilot, and implement compelling, fair, and predictive Imbellus Assessments.

I founded and led Grove as CEO. I'm grateful for how much, how broadly, and how quickly I was able to learn at the helm of a company with a powerful and impactful mission and product. After raising ~$6M and growing the top notch team, we sold Grove's assets to a large Korean electronics and appliance firm in 2018.

Grove led the movement toward sustainable, diversified agriculture with a range of products and technologies that empowered people to grow and source fresh, local food. We built home growing appliances & services ourselves and in partnership with leading kitchen appliance and home furniture brands to bring hardware products to market, then offered Grove seed pods and proprietary ‘Ecology Engine’ AI + apps to customers.

Immediately after closing a >$4M Series A Round, GrabCAD began to grow incredibly quickly.

I helped lead us down the right paths by combining customer feedback and engagement data to guide make-or-break product and marketing decisions. We believed the world would be a better place if we could make the process of creating physical products easier, more accessible, and more fun. Ultimately acquired for $100M by Stratysys.

Fantastic mentors at GrabCAD taught me many valuable lessons about startups and creating a company that's fun to be part of.
