Sunday evening I got locked out of my apartment.

Forgot my phone with my access key while walking my dog.

The front desk staff know me. She wanted to help.

But she couldn’t reset my code.

We’ve been deploying AI-guided training at Karibu.AI, and early on we started calling our approach Conversational Learning. It felt right so I went back to the research to see how the term is actually used.

It turns out Conversational Learning appears in three different domains.
Each captures something useful, but none fully describes our work:

1. Organizational learning theory
Kessels, Schön, and Korthagen use the term for reflective dialogue; 
how teams make meaning after the work is done.
Valuable, but retrospective.

2. Tech Literature
Here it refers to learning delivered through a conversational interface.
Important distinction: Chatbots follow scripts and keywords
Conversational AI understands intent, adapts, and improves over time
But even this is still describing the interface not the learning method.

3. Constructivist Pedagogy
Occasionally applied to inquiry-based learning: 
questions, scenarios, feedback loops.
Interactive, but still classroom-oriented, not operational.

Across all three, one gap stands out:

There is no definition of Conversational Learning as real-time, AI-guided performance support that reduces cognitive load, increases consistency, and travels with the learner.

Yet research is already pointing to the value in this direction:

• Back in 2020 a study showed significantly higher intrinsic motivation for students learning with chat-based agents.
• Studies from 2013 showed learning performance “favors the conversational learning approach” over conventional instruction.
• Additional research shows benefits in language acquisition (Belda-Medina, 2022), civic engagement (Schouten, 2022), and mental-health awareness (Han Li, 2023).

What all these have in common:
People learn more, engage more, remember more, and apply more when they can ask questions, get feedback, and practice through conversation.

But here’s the missing piece:

None of the existing research frameworks address what happens when conversational learning sits inside the workflow itself. That’s the shift we’re building toward at Karibu.AI.

AI makes it possible for training to move from a one-time event to a continuous companion. From something you study to something that also supports you in the moment of doing.

I believe Conversational Learning will become its own category, not just an academic idea or a delivery channel, but a practical operational discipline.

Three months after a major training rollout, I sat in on a customer call.
The rep was phenomenal until the customer asked about our new pricing structure.

Visible panic.

"Let me... uh... check with my manager and get back to you."

We'd spent six weeks training on that exact pricing change. 
She'd passed the quiz. 
She'd attended every session.

But in the moment she needed it? 
Gone.

And I realized: we'd been thinking about this all wrong.

Learning isn't a destination you reach in a training room. 
It's a companion you need in the field.

So instead of asking "how do we make better training?" 
I started asking "how do we make knowledge follow people into real moments?"
That question became Karibu.AI.

We transform static documentation into real-time guidance, so when someone hits that moment of "wait, how do I do this?"
The answer is right there.
