A new Science paper published today makes a strong case for revisiting one of the most persistent assumptions in longevity research.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝟱𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗻 𝘃𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱.

Not 20%.
Not single digits.

Roughly half, once a major confounder is properly addressed.

The study, led by researchers at the 𝗪𝗲𝗶𝘇𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 shows that decades of lifespan heritability estimates were systematically underestimated because they failed to account for 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.

Deaths from accidents, infections, and environmental hazards dilute the biological signal of aging itself.

When those external causes are mathematically separated, the genetic contribution to 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗻 more than doubles.

What this paper does particularly well is clarify a distinction that often gets blurred:
• 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 → environment and chance
• 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 → biological aging processes

Only the second tells us something meaningful about aging biology.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀:
• It reconciles contradictions across twin, pedigree, and population studies
• It reframes aging as a measurable biological trait rather than mostly noise
• It strengthens the rationale for identifying genetic pathways that shape aging trajectories, not just late stage disease

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝘅𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗗𝗡𝗔. 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴.

As an alumna of the Weizmann Institute of Science I find it especially satisfying to see this level of rigorous, model driven thinking applied to a question that has been oversimplified for years.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 

For a while, I thought I was alone in noticing it. 

The growing tendency to wrap everyday products in sciency language.  

When did molecules, lab claims, and biological terminology become the default way to sell everything?

A recent The Atlantic article "The Sciencewashing of Everyday Life" https://lnkd.in/dV4ReBBx reflects a broader cultural shift. Science has become a marketing language of its own, especially across beauty, wellness, supplements, and longevity. 

Walk through a beauty store like SEPHORA, or scroll through wellness products online, and the signals are everywhere:
• Oversized DNA helices and molecular diagrams next to shampoos, serums, and supplements
• Claims about cellular health, cellular repair, or cellular renewal
• References to peptides, patents, and lab testing
• Descriptions framed at the molecular or cellular leve

None of this is necessarily false. That is what makes it effective.

Sciencewashing does not rely on misinformation. It relies on complexity without accountability. The language sounds precise and authoritative, while remaining difficult or impossible to evaluate.

“Cellular health” is a perfect example. It is presented as if it were a rigorous biological concept, but when you look for a definition, you often find circular statements like this : “There is no mysterious scientific definition here. Cellular health simply refers to the health of your cells.”

This is not a definition. It is a tautology.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳.

Real science is uncomfortable and even boring by design. It asks questions that resist clean marketing narratives:
• Compared to what
• In whom
• At what dose
• With what measurable outcome

When everything is framed as molecular, cellular, and science backed, the language stops helping distinguish signal from noise. 

Everything sounds credible. 

Nothing is interpretable.

The brands that will matter next are unlikely to be the loudest. They will be the ones willing to slow down and show their real scientific work that is translated into products. 

More measurement instead of more sciency jargon. 
Well defined biological end points rather than science aesthetics integrated into 'science-first' brand logo.
