Tower Crane Operator

Vireo, Irvine. 8 story multi use building. 3 levels subterranean parking, retail at ground level and 4 levels of condominiums. This was my fourth project running a Tower Crane, but my first where I was the designated lead operator.

Advantage Backhoes

• Competent person certificate, Excavations. 

• Ran a shovel for the backhoe. Spotting for existing underground utility's and Hand digging and undermining as needed. Changing out buckets as required and performing regular maintenance on backhoe. All basic backhoe labor duties. 

• Visually confirmed soil types. 

• Measuring and checking level for grade in trenches. 

• Leveled and flattened trenches with shovel.

• Occasionally operated backhoe, mini excavator and skid steer. Drove and operated dump truck.

• NCCO licensed Tower Crane Operator from 2007-2012.

• Received a safe practices award and commendation for safe operating practices in 2009. 

•Operation of the tower crane at heights above 150 feet as needed. Sometimes for extended periods of time (up to 12 hours) in order to keep up production and meet deadlines. 

•Setting column cages and panels for concrete structure work. 

•Working off drawings of job-site and written instructions from foreman. 

•Moving, securing and inspecting all material in a fast paced, deadline driven work environment. 

•Job required constant use of good judgement, risk analyzation and the ability to make decisions and resolve potential problems in order to accomplish the tasks at hand. 

•Working with a team as a leader and team player was absolutely critical in keeping up moral and safety standards. 

•All crane related maintenance, oiling and inspections, keeping daily crane and maintenance written logs. 

•Conducting, writing and attending daily safety meetings. 

•Operator to rigger communication via radio requiring solid communication skills. 

•Ensured proper rigging is used for various materials/configurations/weights. 
Supervising all loads being rigged and inspecting for proper sling angles and weight distribution before giving the clear to hoist signal. 

•Coordination of material transfers for various trades. 

•Performing 40 hr re-torques on tower bolts. 

•Transferring all loads safely and efficiently while maintaining production.

•A lot of work was performed in “the Blind” so communication skills were critical in ensuring safety. 

•Daily preparation, inspection and use of all rigging gear; nylon straps, wire rope cables, radigans, chains, shackles and hooks. 

•Daily before and after use inspection of rigging materials, determining when materials must be removed from service for any defect according to OSHA standards for acceptable use wear and tear. 

•Certified to Operate various types of forklifts.

Tower Crane Operator/Lead Rigger

Full time dad of two girls 5 & 9 & husband to my beautiful wife of 15 years. Former blue collar construction worker who’s worked in a number of trades. First jobs were in restaurants as a teenager washing dishes, bussing tables and prepping food. Worked in sheet rock, residential framing, and Completed three years of an electricians apprenticeship in my twenties, then decided to become a high rise tower crane operator instead. And then, after almost 10 scattered years of feast or famine crane operating with a four year detour after one economic collapse, worked as a stagehand in New York City, an Iron worker in Los Angeles, ran a shovel for backhoes in excavations in San Diego, with my last 5 year stretch In tower cranes in New Mexico, Orange County, and the Phoenix Arizona valley,-made a career pivot out of the tower crane industry into tech and SaaS sales at 41. Generally a happy and positive guy who’s passionate about promoting financial freedom for everyone and improving the relationship between employers and employees, leveraging technology. Student of life & lifelong learner. CrossFitter, mountain biker, snowboarder, photographer, Grand Canyon rim to rim hiker, desert dweller, car lover, reader, thinker, brother, friend; human having an experience.
