The one reason why email lists buy (or don’t)?

Let me explain.

Most emails out there focus on what their audience needs.

That's why most emails don't make sales.

In reality people need very little.

That's why desire drives people to buy- not needs.

Desire is the gap between where they are and where they want to go.  

How do you stop your email list from becoming another digital museum of good ideas...

You use precise language.

Converting newsletters recognize words matter.

I discovered this with my first sales letter for a dog joint supplement in 2014.

Instead of yapping about the ingredients, which was the go-to at the time... 

I shared a story about how one of the clients stopped jumping onto the couch.

It crushed. 

Not jumping on the couch and not jumping up for treats are the first signs that your dog is getting old.

And readers feel they’re losing their furry friend.

TLDR

Smart insights without clear direction create educated browsers, not buyers.

I just got engaged in secret.

And if you’ve ever planned a wedding…

You already know where this is going:

Anda panda… these things are expensive.

Every decision has a price tag.

Flowers? Expensive.

Add Tension.

Tension is the ONLY reason someone keeps scrolling.

Because tension = unfinished business.

Let me show you.

Here’s the email most founders send:

“Today I want to talk about improving your funnel metrics…”

Easy to delete, right?

Here’s how I’d rewrite it:

“We had 20 minutes before the campaign went live…
and one number told me we were about to lose $18,200.”

Feel the difference?

Instead of pushing a point onto someone…
you’re pulling them into your world.

And yes, I want clients to master this because tension leads to more revenue…

…but also because:

Weddings are expensive and I love this woman.

Here’s the 3-step tension framework I’m relying on:

1. Open a loop in the first 2–3 lines

An incomplete thought your reader must resolve.

“I just got engaged in secret.”

Confessions, secrets, fails, or favors are my go-to tools here.

2. Raise the stakes

Show what could be won or lost.

“…and weddings are expensive so this may not happen…”

Stakes keep the reader invested.

3. Delay the meaning

Use micro-tension line by line.

“Because weddings are pricey…
I need more revenue…
my clients need better results…
from ONE strategy…”

That’s tension.

That’s why people read.

You do this, and people will read every email you send.

You don’t, and they’ll skim, delete, ignore, and forget.

The lesson?

Your email should feel like a show you can’t stop watching.

I sold $10.1M of digital courses in 16 months.

But when I switched to selling services…

None of that copy worked.

It took me a while to understand why.

It wasn’t that the messaging was “bad.”

It was that the risk reversal mechanism had changed.

Here is what I mean..

Courses reduce risk with the plan.

Services reduce risk with what gets built.

When someone buys a course, they’re doing the work.

They need to know the roadmap is solid.

That’s what calms the buyer’s fear:

“Will I know what to do next?”

But when someone buys a service?

They’re not buying the roadmap.

They’re buying what gets done.

That’s what calms a service buyer’s fear:

“Will the work get done at the level I need?”

This is the mistake most service providers make:

They sell the plan when the buyer wants the proof.

They talk in intentions:

“we help founders…”

But that does not reduce risk.

Specific claims do:

“We reduced a founder’s workload by 17 hours/week.”
“112 clicks → 287 clicks after this change.”
“We deliver 12 assets/month — done for you.”

One client proved this last month.

Their email list was only booking 1–3% of calls.

We were explaining their system…

But not what the system produced.

Once we rewrote the emails around real mechanisms behind results...
…their bookings jumped.

Because the copy finally answered the question that mattered

How do I know this will work?

And when the answer is concrete, specific, and low-friction…

The sale becomes inevitable.

Here’s the rule I follow now:

If you’re selling services, reduce risk by showing what gets done.

Simple, outcome-driven copy built on your own data always beats clever copy built on nothing.

Each piece of content you publish is a kiss from a stranger in the dark.

Most founders never realize this, so their content becomes:

A weak kiss (no pull, no spark)

or

Clinginess (“Please like me. Please hire me.”)

Both push people away.

Your content has one purpose:

Create enough tension, interest, and utility
that the reader wants the next interaction.

Here are the 3 rules that matter:

1. Structure your tension

Tension keeps people leaning in.

It’s anticipation.

It’s the open loop the brain must close.

If your first lines don’t create pull,

your reader won’t make it to the payoff.

2. Start with attraction

Attraction doesn’t come from big promises.

It comes from pattern breaks:

Like a different angle or an unexpected outcome

Your goal is to make the reader think:

“Wait… what do you mean?”

or

“How does that work?”

That’s the spark.

3. Deliver utility

Your content needs to pay for the reader’s attention.

A rule.

A lens.

A takeaway.

A step they can use today.

Without utility, you drain attention instead of earning the next touchpoint.

If you want strangers to become readers…
readers to become prospects…
and prospects to become clients…

Your content must:

pull with tension
hold with interest
and earn the next interaction with utility.

Don’t chase trends.

Write the next kiss.

Put your best line up top. Earn attention early.

10. Stop losing the easy wins.

Typos and broken links kill credibility instantly.

When you remove the friction, the persuasion takes care of itself.

Email doesn’t sell your offer.

It sells the next step. 

Most people never figure this out.

The inbox is the noisiest environment your prospect will ever be in.

Readers skim between meetings, clearing notifications, or half-reading in line at Costco.

That’s not where high-ticket decisions get made.

And after rebuilding 200+ email systems for founders, the pattern is always the same:

Founders pour time into rewriting nurture sequences, designing funnels, or “adding more value”... 

Yet their revenue doesn’t move.

Because sales don’t happen inside the email.

The easiest conversion boost you’ll ever get?

Replace every adjective with a fact.

Adjectives fail because they create friction.

Let me explain:

Friction = the mental work required for a reader to believe you.

If a claim forces the reader to interpret, imagine, or guess…

...that’s friction.

And vague claims create the most friction of all.

1. Vague claims force interpretation (why this kills conversions)

“Best in the world” makes the reader decide what “best” means.

Interpretation = cognitive load.

Neuroscience 101:

The brain avoids high-load decisions.

So vague claims don’t just “sound weak.”

They increase the mental cost of believing you, which reduces action.

2. Specifics remove interpretation (the mechanism behind it)

“3⅓× more light” requires zero imagination.

It’s pre-interpreted.

The brain prefers data that’s already been processed for it —
because it’s cheaper to think about.

This is cognitive fluency, one of the most repeatable findings in behavioral science:

the easier something is to understand, the more true it feels.

3. Specifics signal accountability (why they create trust)

Numbers imply testing, measurement, and constraints.

This is why specific claims sound riskier for the writer which makes them safer for the reader.

Specifics = skin in the game.

4. Specifics transfer certainty (you trust the data, not the writer)

A reader can doubt your intention.

But it’s difficult to doubt:

- a measurement
- a before/after
- a timeline
- a percentage
- a tested outcome

Specifics let the reader borrow your certainty without trusting your personality.

See what I mean:

“More light.” in one ad becomes “3⅓× more light.”

“Abundant lather.” becomes “Multiplies 250×… softens beard in 1 minute… stays creamy 10 minutes.”

“Lowest prices.” flips into “We make 3% margin.”

These ads aren’t just famous, they’re measured wins from controlled experiments.

One fact outperforms a hundred adjectives.

Because facts eliminate belief friction.

One of the traditions I hold dear on Thanksgiving is going for a walk with my wife (even if it’s freezing cold), just to chat about the good things from the past year.

This year, there’s been plenty on the business front: speaking at events, sold-out Podcast Profits Accelerator Programs, the growth of our 7-Figure Leap community, and the remarkable wave of leads that came from my interview on the Nathan Barry Show.

Almost all of them started the same way: somebody willing to trust me to serve their audience.

I made $50,000 from my very first group coaching program…

That's the sexy headline, but it was actually an UGLY process that sent me to the doctor.

Let me explain.

The reality is I had done 1-on-1 coaching with good success for over a year.  I saw others running groups, and it seemed like the logical next step.

So in April 2022, I decided to go all-in that approach - and spent $25K with a guru running a "mastermind" that taught me very little.

One of my favorite activities inside 7-Figure Leap is our quarterly Community Networking Sessions.

We ask every member of our Podcast Profits Accelerator the same question during the kick-off call:

Here’s my reflection on the relationships seeds planted with everyone in the October cohort of our Podcast Profits Accelerator which kicked off a couple weeks ago.

Internal discomfort is a good sign that you’re at an inflection point in your business.

When this happened to me, I was doing the thing I’d been trying to do for over a year, and felt blessed and grateful for it. I was coaching folks 1:1 to leverage podcast guesting to add profit to their business.

It was working well, but I found myself a bit uncomfortable internally. A little bit creatively bored.

This usually turns into shiny object syndrome, where I start thinking about new offers and new businesses I could be a part of.

I don’t know if it’s God’s providence or a result of sitting in the same place for so long, but here’s what I’ve found:

When I start asking questions, or getting creatively bored, someone shows up. We’re having a conversation, or I’m helping them, and the mirror gets held up — I realize I needed to hear that specific piece of advice myself.

For me, that advice was to branch out from 1:1 coaching into a cohort-based offer. It ended up being a 10X inflection point in my life and in my business. Since then, I’ve sold out 18 consecutive cohorts and earned over $2.5M in revenue with group coaching.

If you’ve been thinking about packaging your expertise into a group coaching offer, this could be your inflection point. And I’d love to be your guide.

There are two mistakes I see people make over & over when it comes to podcast guesting.

They don’t have a PLAN for which podcasts to pitch, and they don’t think about the ‘Content Gap’.

It all starts with identifying your ideal client, where you’re trying to meet them, and their journey so far.

If you don’t know that, you’ll end up with:

→ Missed Networking Opportunities
→ A Misaligned Audience
→ Poor Performance

Here’s what I’d do if I were starting over today:

Identify the FIRST target audience. Once you’ve nailed that down, write 3 topics and stories you want to share with them.

Identify Content Gaps, the sweet spot for podcast guesting that adds profit. 
Find podcasts where the host is missing a topic their audience would enjoy, and you would excel speaking about. Look for hosts/shows with the same target audience as your business, but different offerings. Here’s an example:

Imagine you're a marriage coach who solves communication problems for couples. Your first thought is probably to target all the top marriage podcasts.

But there’s a problem.

Those are all hosted by other marriage coaches who are trying to fix communication problems. There’s no Content Gap.

You and the host essentially play the same role on the show, so it’s not gonna work.

On the flip side, when the Content Gap is too big, you’ll never have resonance.

So we’re trying to find the sweet spot, some overlap between what you do and what the podcast’s audience expects.

For example: you could be the featured marriage coach on personal finance podcasts - financial stress & communication challenges in relationships are closely linked.

Then, create an objective scoring system to evaluate a podcast opportunity. Assign a rating to each metric and create a “Strength Of Lead” Score so you’re always making data-driven decisions and prioritizing the most promising opportunities.

(Bonus) Use tools like Listen Notes and Apple Podcasts to conduct thorough research on potential podcasts. Check out the show's content, audience size, and category rankings.

Believe it or not, I take a security blanket with me to every single podcast interview I do.

I call it a Magic Post-It.

Each one includes:

→ The host’s name
Super awkward if I forget this!

→ 3x credibility highlights
These make people trust us. I focus on facts, examples & case studies here.
Credibility highlights prepare the audience to believe in us, and make our Call To Action at the end more effective.

→ 3x mini stories
I always try and sprinkle these in throughout the chat.
If I’m drawing a blank, or there’s an awkward pause, I can go back to these mini stories.

→ Show specifics
Here I write down any specific details I’ll need for the show.
e.g. if there’s a Lightning Round or final question, I always make sure I’ve got a response ready.

→ My Call To Action
A clear, concise Call To Action is what turns an interview appearance into profit.
Whether it’s a lead magnet, a discount code or something else, there’s nothing worse than going blank on this. I write it down so I can’t forget it.

When I'm done with the interview, I crumple up my Magic Post-It. I make a new one for each show. That way I’m always fresh, prepared, and in the moment, ready to perform with confidence.
