Easy to delete, right?

Here’s how I’d rewrite it:

“We had 20 minutes before the campaign went live…
and one number told me we were about to lose $18,200.”

Feel the difference?

Instead of pushing a point onto someone…
you’re pulling them into your world.

And yes, I want clients to master this because tension leads to more revenue…

…but also because:

Weddings are expensive and I love this woman.

Here’s the 3-step tension framework I’m relying on:

1. Open a loop in the first 2–3 lines

An incomplete thought your reader must resolve.

“I just got engaged in secret.”

Confessions, secrets, fails, or favors are my go-to tools here.

2. Raise the stakes

Show what could be won or lost.

“…and weddings are expensive so this may not happen…”

Stakes keep the reader invested.

3. Delay the meaning

Use micro-tension line by line.

“Because weddings are pricey…
I need more revenue…
my clients need better results…
from ONE strategy…”

That’s tension.

That’s why people read.

You do this, and people will read every email you send.

You don’t, and they’ll skim, delete, ignore, and forget.

The lesson?

Your email should feel like a show you can’t stop watching.

“112 clicks → 287 clicks after this change.”
“We deliver 12 assets/month — done for you.”

But not what the system produced.

Here’s the rule I follow now:

If you’re selling services, reduce risk by showing what gets done.

Simple, outcome-driven copy built on your own data always beats clever copy built on nothing.

1. Structure your tension

Tension keeps people leaning in.

It’s anticipation.

It’s the open loop the brain must close.

If your first lines don’t create pull,

2. Start with attraction

Attraction doesn’t come from big promises.

It comes from pattern breaks:

Like a different angle or an unexpected outcome

Your goal is to make the reader think:

“Wait… what do you mean?”

or

“How does that work?”

That’s the spark.

3. Deliver utility

Your content needs to pay for the reader’s attention.

A rule.

A lens.

A takeaway.

A step they can use today.

Without utility, you drain attention instead of earning the next touchpoint.

The easiest conversion boost you’ll ever get?

Replace every adjective with a fact.

Adjectives fail because they create friction.

Let me explain:

Friction = the mental work required for a reader to believe you.

If a claim forces the reader to interpret, imagine, or guess…

...that’s friction.

And vague claims create the most friction of all.

1. Vague claims force interpretation (why this kills conversions)

“Best in the world” makes the reader decide what “best” means.

Interpretation = cognitive load.

Neuroscience 101:

The brain avoids high-load decisions.

So vague claims don’t just “sound weak.”

They increase the mental cost of believing you, which reduces action.

2. Specifics remove interpretation (the mechanism behind it)

“3⅓× more light” requires zero imagination.

It’s pre-interpreted.

The brain prefers data that’s already been processed for it —
because it’s cheaper to think about.

This is cognitive fluency, one of the most repeatable findings in behavioral science:

the easier something is to understand, the more true it feels.

3. Specifics signal accountability (why they create trust)

Numbers imply testing, measurement, and constraints.

This is why specific claims sound riskier for the writer which makes them safer for the reader.

Specifics = skin in the game.

4. Specifics transfer certainty (you trust the data, not the writer)

A reader can doubt your intention.

But it’s difficult to doubt:

- a measurement
- a before/after
- a timeline
- a percentage
- a tested outcome

Specifics let the reader borrow your certainty without trusting your personality.

See what I mean:

“More light.” in one ad becomes “3⅓× more light.”

“Abundant lather.” becomes “Multiplies 250×… softens beard in 1 minute… stays creamy 10 minutes.”

“Lowest prices.” flips into “We make 3% margin.”

These ads aren’t just famous, they’re measured wins from controlled experiments.

One fact outperforms a hundred adjectives.

Because facts eliminate belief friction.
