Most programmers are worrying about the wrong thing with AI.
Lately I’ve been hearing stories of skilled programmers panicking about AI and “vibe coding.” One even became an electrician.
Here’s what I think we’re missing.

Skilled programmers don’t just write code.
They build systems.

They integrate dozens of moving parts so everything works together securely, reliably, and intelligently.

Three things matter:
• The parts work together properly
• The system connects safely to the outside world
• The security actually protects users

For the life of me, I can’t see a non-technical person chatting with Claude Code and covering those bases at the same level as a trained professional.

I love the idea of using AI to program. I just want a skilled programmer in charge.

If businesses really start skipping experienced developers, I expect some spectacular failures.

And here’s why I care.

A lot of those skilled programmers are solopreneurs.

They’re independent contractors building critical systems for companies that don’t have in-house teams.

AI isn’t replacing expertise.

It’s changing how productive that expertise can be.

So remember: tools change. Fundamentals don’t.
