Last week, I fired a brand new client — no regrets.

He wasn’t prepared to listen to my advice.
He was rude, dismissive, and resistant to feedback.

Ironically, his business was about helping others “clarify their focus.”
But when I asked him to define his own... he listed 20 things.
When I suggested choosing one, he pushed back. Hard.

That’s when I knew: we weren’t aligned.
And alignment isn’t a luxury. It’s a requirement.

Everyone’s trashing office work these days.

But I just spoke with the founder of a high-end lifestyle brand in the UK.

Her company has a full-time, in-office policy.

No hybrid. No WFH.

Has it made recruitment tougher? Yes.

But the founder’s stance is clear:

“If you don’t want to work side-by-side with your colleagues, you’re not a fit for our culture.”

And honestly? I get it.

I’ve led teams from ten to a thousand.

And if there’s one thing I’ve learned:

I went full-time self-employed in Summer 2023, and over 2 years later, I’m running a proper business.
 
My first experience with LinkedIn was in my 9-5. I ran the company's LinkedIn, and I helped secure multiple contracts for the company through the platform, but when I was refused a pay raise, I thought to myself, “I can do this myself, f*** it,” and Joe Carson Content Marketing was born.

Might be the worst thing I’ve ever heard…
 
It was said to me on a recent sales call.
 
I was slightly taken aback.
 
This wasn’t Off-White or some huge brand,
 
The man ran a small consultancy firm targeting a niche market.
 
I explained that in markets like this,
 
If you don’t hit cold leads, your sales cycle will be min 12 months.
 
(His was 18 months) 
 
With the right approach, it should be under 4 months.
 
He’d rely on networking events and working some rooms for new business.
 
He liked everything else about my approach.
But hated the cold outreach.
 
I asked him why, and I understand his answer: he hated the:
 
➡️ Long sales pitches in DMs
 
➡️ Relentless sales reps ignoring relationships
 
➡️ Weird AI personalisation in his LinkedIn and email inbox
 
 
He didn’t hate cold outreach.
 
He hated cold outreach with bad targeting and copy.
 
 
I showed him some messages from past clients,

His response?
 
“I wouldn’t have thought that was outreach, I’d have replied.”
 
I’m not here to force you to do something you hate.
 
But refusing to contact cold leads will only be detrimental to your business.
 
Assuming you do it in the right way.

We started working together in Q1.  

Across the contracts, there was a guarantee of 25 sales meetings.

Client relationships don’t need to end badly.

For me, they very rarely do.

Most end because the client wants to take their lead gen in-house.

Which is fine with me. 

My LinkedIn lead gen systems are built for an easy transfer.

I’m aware this goes against business guru advice of:

“Keep the client dependent, so they keep paying.”

But that’s not me.

After 30+ clients, I can confidently say:



It requires expertise and time to build a LinkedIn lead gen system,

But it’s significantly easier to maintain.

It’s why my clients see success from the platform long after we stop working together.

You have 2 types of customers.

If you only market towards 1, you can’t succeed.
 
The first kind?
 
🥊 The target-rich kind.
 
People who are actively experiencing the problem you solve.
 
For example, if a CRM had sent me a cold email the day mine went down,
 
I’d have likely bought. It was a today problem.

These customers are rarer. 
The second kind?
 
🥊 The person whose problem you can solve

🥊 But it’s not a top priority; they’ve got more pressing issues.
 
E.g., if a CRM pitched me today,
 
I wouldn’t buy today, 

But I am a qualified prospect who will likely be in the market in the future. 
 
Do you see the difference?
 
I know you’re asking:
 
“So what’s the point in marketing towards the 2nd kind?”
 
Well, when my CRM crashed,
 
I bought the CRM that was front of mind.
 
For months, they hadn’t hard-sold to me,
 
Instead, they “nurtured” me through their marketing methods.

They were consistent, visible, and relevant.
 
Meaning when I had a problem, they could solve, 

They were who I thought of. 
 
You should market towards both kinds of customers; they’re equally important.
 
PS. Use proper intent signals to source the target-rich kind! 

Don't just assume.

idk who needs to hear this,

Stop spending 5-figures annually on networking events,

If they’re your only lead gen “system”

In the nicest possible way, 

It’s dinosaur stuff. 

I get it-  most of your customers come from these events. 

Or “membership groups.”

But it takes you 12-18 months after your first interaction to close the deal. 

It's not exactly efficient. 

Am I saying these events are 100% pointless?

No, some clients still attend while working with me. 

But using these events as your only lead gen “system” is inefficient and costs you thousands. 

(Never mind the opportunity cost)

Especially when you can replicate the whole process on LinkedIn.

Think about it. 

It takes 5 events and numerous conversations for the networking event lead to trust you.

You can do that on LinkedIn in a few weeks. 

You can get to the “sales” part of your process within a month,

Instead of waiting for month 6 with the classic way.

It’s faster, cheaper, and more effective. 

Clients have seen their sales cycle shorten from 18 months, 

Down to 12 weeks with a modern approach. 

I get that these events have been the industry standard for decades, 

Especially in the niche industries I work in,

But I wouldn’t have a business if they weren’t outdated.  


PS. For the clients who still attend these events, we connect with all attendees on LinkedIn weeks in advance. 

So each lead already knows my client, and what they do before the first handshake.

Idk if it’s just me, 

But are your sales calls different right now?

Recently, before business even came up, I've had calls where we've spoke about:

➡️ If Alexsander Isak will turn it around

➡️ My own personal goals and where I want my business in the next 12 months

I might be overthinking, 
But I want to know if it’s just me,

Or if buying behaviour has changed?

Changed to the point where prospects:

🥊 Research you more than ever
🥊 Use the sales call as a “personality check”

Maybe I'm an anomaly, but I want to know your opinion.

I’m extremely open about my process/pricing on my website and on LinkedIn.

So by the time a prospect books a call, 
They know everything business-related already.

Maybe the call now serves a different purpose?

To see if we click as people?

“Do you automate your LinkedIn lead gen, or use AI in your processes?”

Fair question, it depends on the client. 

More specifically, it depends on what they offer. 

I rarely automate LinkedIn DMs
Mainly because of the industries I work in. 

The general rule is:

The more relationship-focused the offer, the less likely I am to automate.

When I send cold DMs on my own account, 
It’s a manual process because my offer is relationship-focused. 

The same goes for all of my current clients. 

I don’t work with SAAS products, 
But they’re a great example of something more transactional,

Where automation makes sense. 


For the AI side of things,

It covers 90% of my “current” market research.

With the systems I’ve set up, it allows me to know current problems potential customers are facing right now. 

Allowing for DMs and posts to be relevant. 

It’s shortened my market research time from 20 hours to 20 minutes. 

(I also use AI for data analysis, enrichment, and admin)


I know a lot of people either swear by automation/AI,
Or are adamantly against it. 

I’m in the middle, but for the services I typically generate leads for,

(business services in masculine industries)

I rarely automate DMs, or use AI for anything I didn’t list.

It’s the most underrated aspect of LinkedIn lead gen. 

LinkedIn leads rarely ghost.

If you’ve done any other cold lead gen, 

You know 10-20% of those leads won’t show up to the call.

While on LinkedIn:

🥊 You’ve nurtured the lead for longer in DMs
🥊 They’re consistently reminded that you exist by posts

Resulting in the lead almost certainly showing up to the call. 

(And you don't need 5 automated reminders) 

It’s human psychology.

The lead likes/trusts you more, so they won’t book unless they’ll show up.
