Earned media value (EMV) translates organic performance into money: it estimates what your impressions and engagement would have cost if you had bought them as ads. It is the metric that makes LinkedIn effort legible to a CFO.

How to calculate it

The common formula is: impressions divided by 1,000, multiplied by the average CPM for LinkedIn ads. Some models add a value per engagement (click, comment, share) on top.

Example: 500,000 organic impressions at a $30 CPM equals $15,000 of earned media value.

Where EMV is useful, and where it is not

EMV shines in reporting: it justifies content programs, employee advocacy and corporate influencer investments in budget language. But it is an estimate, not revenue. Treat it as a comparison tool between periods and programs, not as money in the bank.

To know what your reach is worth, you first need to track it properly with a LinkedIn analytics tool.
