My key philosophies around digital products: - You don’t passively own software; you tend software. It requires constant care and maintenance. - Software is seasonal, much life farming. There is a season for sowing and reaping, for planting and for harvesting. Sometimes you add new features, sometimes you maintain and fix bugs, sometimes you start something new. - The hard work of software comes before writing a single line of code. It is understanding the problem you are solving (really, truly, deeply understanding it), finding a solution that is simultaneously feasible (can be built given the current resources of the business), usable (customers understand how it solves their problem and want to use it), and desirable (customers actually pay for it.) Only then can one write code with confidence. This is a form of the idea: when confronted with a hard problem, make the hard problem easy, then solve the easy problem. Across my career: - I have lead multiple teams in a $150M business. I know what it takes to grow and sustain a technology strategy for scalable & robust systems, and how to lead teams to remain agile in delivering across a complex codebase. - I have been the sole developer for a small family-owned business. I understand the unique constraints of a small business and know how to deliver value quickly within a tight budget. - I have consulted with startups helping them to validate and prototype their ideas on the way to finding product-market fit. I know what it takes to turn ideas into experiments, to validate assumptions, ensuring we understand the problem, have a viable solution, and can deliver value all along the way. - And I have started my own businesses: a large-format print shop, an import business selling goods online, and a SaaS startup, so I know something about the hustle and grind of self-employment and startup life.
