10 years ago, I was a PS3 addict, a coder, a guitarist - 'comfortably numb' with no regrets. This was the ‘calm’ before the storm—a moment that changed my life forever. I woke up from the ‘Groundhog's Day’ of my daily job, refusing to be treated like a ‘cog in a machine’, dreaming to break free and do creative work. 2013 was a time when ‘mobility’ was on the rise, the digital space saw a revolution—mobile apps and responsive websites. Designers and Techies united like never before, appreciating the need for collaboration - to create delightful digital experiences. Bangalore was emerging to be a ‘Startup’ hub, where it became more fashionable to have a failed startup than climbing the corporate ladder. My partner Vidhya & I co-founded Codewave - we envisioned an Org that runs like a ‘social network’, thriving with autonomy, authenticity, and creativity. We dumped traditional ‘JDs’ and made every job a ‘Product thinking’ job. We wanted everyone to ‘Start with Why’ and do intentional, purpose-led work. Codewave’s unique culture of self-management, transparency & empathy sparked curiosity in the Startup world. We were known to be an ‘innovation force’ of design-thinkers that intervened and transformed businesses. We’ve seen a record level employee and customer retention, organically growing through referrals - that we spent “Zero” money on ads, for a good few years in business. Codewave is now a company of companies, with people building new products & services, apart from the design thinking & digital transformation services we offer for our customers. Growing up in #Bangalore, I remember a city full of trees, shaded streets, and pockets of greenery everywhere. "𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆'𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵" 😱 Ironically: Even with "transparency" as a core value at Codewave, unknowingly, I was becoming the information bottleneck. Back in 2017, when we were just 40 people, I noticed something concerning: Colleagues who were free to work or finishing projects were constantly worried about what was coming next. 😟 "Do we have enough projects in the pipeline?" "What will I work on after this?" The anxiety was palpable. Some would regularly check in with me or the sales team about upcoming work. But I realized there were many others, especially introverts, who worried silently without ever approaching me. One of our developers finally spoke up: "I've been wanting to ask about projects for months, but never felt I could just walk up to the CEO." That hit hard. 💔 If we didn't fix this now, how could we scale? Our "crazy" solution: We put ALL upcoming projects on office TVs for everyone to see. Some asked, "Aren't you worried about competitors?" My response: "If we can't trust our own people with our future, who can we trust?" The results were magical. ✨ People started approaching us with genuine passion: "I want to work on that football project because I love sports!" ⚽ "That fintech project aligns perfectly with what I've been studying!" 📊 "This project's impact matters deeply to me." ❤️ Teams formed organically. Natural patterns emerged. Gen-Z teammates especially thrived with this transparency. This shift in culture helped us grow to 200+ people.
