I am a Statistics post-graduate. Learning and story-telling have been central pillars of my life.

Is more data always good? (ft. Kaala Bandar 🐒)

In 2001, Delhi saw reports of a black monkey-like creature that attacked people at night. Over 350 sightings of the Kala Bandar were reported, around 60 resulting in injuries. People even jumped from rooftops in fear.

Even though people's intentions were well-meaning, the size of the sighting data was itself a problem. It was certain that most reports were false alarms. Discerning correct sightings from false alarms was a challenge. 

Bayesian Inference, in statistics provides a way to use the large size of sequential data to its advantage. Start with the probability of Kaala Bandar being uniform existence over each grid in the entire city. With each new chronological data point, the likelihood of existence in each grid gets updated. One still would need a domain expert to make some decisions such as whose opinion is to be trusted more—a drunkard or a child (veracity estimations). However, one can get some insights from this method. 

Kaala Bandar Case was called a mass hysteria, and became part of urban legends. 

So to answer our question, more data is not always better. No data is completely objective; data quality is another key issue.
