I am an entrepreneur, published author, and podcast host. 

I focus on building businesses in subscription and e-commerce. My experience spans 15 years of entrepreneurship, advising Fortune 500 leaders, learning from world-class founders through podcasting, and writing the best-selling book The Subscription Boom.

Last night, my daughter showed me her homework.

A map of Canada from 1862.
(technically, 'British North America' until 1867)

The assignment?
Colour the provinces and label them.

Here’s the kicker: she’s in grade 8.  

When I asked about it, she said: “Dad… I’ve done this exact assignment in grade 5, grade 6, grade 7… and now grade 8.”

Meanwhile, she starts high school next year.
She’ll be applying to college or university in less than four.

So I asked her: “What would actually be useful to learn?”

Her answer: “Budgeting. Taxes. Technology. AI. Things that are actually useful, Dad.”

And she’s right.

Instead, we’re colouring maps from 1862.

This isn’t just a TDSB problem. 
Parents everywhere see the same thing: 

A curriculum recycling irrelevant material while the future accelerates past our kids.

We talk about preparing the next generation, but we’re teaching them information they could Google in 0.3 seconds.

Where’s the financial literacy? 
Where are the digital skills? 
Where’s the real-world problem solving? 
Where’s ANYTHING that aligns with the world they’re growing up in?

It’s 2025.

Kids are asking for relevant education. 
And we’re handing them crayons.🖍️ 

They deserve better. 
So do we.

Today marks six years since my father passed away.

This photo from years ago, was taken at a place he loved. 
I treasure it because it’s one of the few moments in those later years, where he truly looked at peace.

My dad was a business owner. He built something of his own, worked harder than anyone I knew, and like so many, sacrificed almost everything for more hours at his desk.

Eighteen-hour days was normal. No exercise. Little sleep.

I remember trying to get him to slow down.  To eat better, to sleep more, to take better care of himself.  
But when you’re addicted to work, and terrified of going broke, you ignore the advice.

He suffered a stroke in 2014.  He passed 5 years later.

Since then, I’ve thought a lot about what drives people like him. And if I’m honest, I see parts of that wiring in myself.

I run my own company. I’m married, with three kids. There are weeks where I can barely keep up.

But one promise I’ve kept is this: I don’t sacrifice my health for my work. Because I’ve seen where that road leads.

Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish. It’s one of the greatest gifts you can give the people who love you.

Miss you, Dad.

Winters in Toronto take more out of me than I admit.
So a sunny run in December lands differently.

The Subscription Generation.

Millennials are the most active subscribers on the planet.

By the numbers:

• Millennials — 17
• Gen Z — 14
• Gen X — 13
• 𝐀𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 — 𝟏𝟐
• Boomers — 8
• Seniors — 7

North Americans think they spend ~$60/month on a few subscriptions.

The actual number? 👇
$275/month, spread across 12 active subscriptions.

And the numbers keep climbing.

Growth is driven by digital access subscriptions. 
Think streaming, paid apps, memberships, cloud tools, etc. 

They generate extraordinary margins because they live quietly inside our devices, and there's no hard COGS. 

And the reality is, consumers are lazy. 

We subscribe, and then forget we're still paying. 

Very convenient for consumers.
Totally brilliant for businesses.

The subscription economy isn’t slowing. 

... question is, will Gen Z out-subscribe the generation that built it?

People don’t stay in corporate for the paycheck.

They stay because of fear. 

Fear of losing identity, status, safety,
and the version of themselves they’ve built for others.

After 15 years in consulting,

I’m seeing a trend in boardrooms.

Execs are seeing low retention in specific cohorts, 
and blame the product or the onboarding. 

They assume they acquired low quality leads.
But often, the culprit is Involuntary Churn.

If you're treating 𝘗𝘢𝘺𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘖𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 as “managing multiple MID’s”,
you are leaving revenue on the table. 

Orchestration is not just about merchant account redundancy;

The difference lies in the infrastructure:

Birchbox helped people discover what they liked.
Then customers bought the full-size products from Amazon or Sephora. 

Once the value ended, the subscription stalled. 
LTV followed.🔻

Google Stadia charged a monthly fee and full price for games.
Meanwhile, Xbox Game Pass offered everything under one fee.
The model asked for recurring revenue without recurring value.

CNN+ launched a premium news subscription that couldn’t show live CNN.
The thing people actually wanted.
It lasted 30 days.

Different brands, same pattern:
When value doesn’t compound, customers churn.

Recurring billing is a mechanism.
Recurring value is the moat.

Subscriptions don’t fail because people hate subscriptions.
They fail because value stalls.
