Imagine a room with no phones. 
No TVs. No distractions.
Just people sitting, and talking.

I was in a cigar lounge last weekend.
Once upon a time, cigar lounges were cultural hubs. 

In the early 20th century, they were fixtures of urban culture. 
In the ‘90s, during the “cigar boom,” they made a comeback. 
Today, they’re basically extinct. 
There are none in Toronto. 

Stepping inside felt like time travel, 
… reminded me of how folks connected before social media:

→ Porches and park benches 
→ House parties that stretched till morning 
→ Coffee shops, diners 
→ Speakeasies tucked behind doors  
→ Music festivals and record stores 
→ Book clubs and libraries

None of these spaces were designed for content. 
They were designed for conversation.

Years ago, I deleted Facebook. Then Twitter. 
I’ve never had Instagram or TikTok. 
I use LinkedIn—intentionally, for business.

The irony is,  one cigar won’t kill you. 
But social media might. 

Real connection isn’t found in followers. 
It’s found in quiet, analog spaces.

Five years later, The Subscription Boom comes full circle at Subscription Show 2025 in NY.

proof that meaningful work endures, even when release timing doesn’t.

The book was published in March 2020,
the same week the world shut down.
 No official book launch. Speaking tour cancelled. Stores closed. 

Yet today, the book feels more relevant than ever. The subscription economy hasn’t slowed; in fact, it’s accelerating toward $1 trillion+.
 And the ideas that shaped the book continue to shape the industry.

Grateful to see it still resonate with founders, operators, and teams building the next wave of recurring-revenue businesses 🙏

Meaningful work compounds.

My youngest turns 9 today

… and he’s celebrating by running a big cross-country race.

He never does anything halfway.
Friendship, family, sports… he gives 100% of himself.  Every time.

What I’ve learned from him:
it’s not talent or luck that makes you succeed—it’s showing up fully, with heart, in everything you do.

Went to the Jays <> Yankees game III. 
 
In the BIG apple.  

Jays up 6-1, only to see the Yanks roar back, and ultimately take a 9-6 victory.  

Plenty of hatred toward us Jays fans. 

Plenty of trash talk about how if we lost game 3, we’d lose the series …

Tonight, I watched the game from my hotel room.

Final score tonight: 5-2 Jays. 
Total runs scored in series: 34-19. 
Jays win the ALDS. 

To all the yankee fans who “spit” in the face of Jays fans last night: 

“How you like them apples 🍎?”

1. Xbox Game Pass Price Backlash

Microsoft is raising Game Pass prices again—yup. 

Ultimate now $19.99/month in the US. While the service helped drive all-time-high subscription spending last month, gamers are frustrated, citing value dilution and fatigue from constant hikes.

Why this matters: Game Pass has been the poster child for subscription adoption in gaming. Price increases risk its perceived “best value in gaming” positioning.

What’s next: Expect churn at the margins and louder calls for publishers to offer modular or bundle-lite versions to balance affordability.

2. Netflix Stock Slides—Elon Musk Adds Fuel
Netflix shares fell sharply this week, with Elon Musk blasting the streamer for woke politics and weak storytelling. While Musk’s commentary isn’t new, investor sentiment is down, and the company is under pressure. 

Why this matters: Netflix remains the bellwether for streaming economics. So, this kind of noise, and declining investor confidence is real bad for “business”.

What’s next: Expect greater scrutiny on Netflix’s pivot toward licensing and lower-cost content—while Musk’s critique amplifies cultural pressures.

3. Snapchat Monetizes Memories

Snap announced that users will soon need to pay to store unlimited old photos and videos. The feature—previously free—will now be gated behind Snapchat+ or some kind of subscription upsell. 

Why this matters: Social media platforms have been chasing direct recurring revenue. And, Snap has been on this wagon for a while. 

What’s next: Watch for user pushback. This could either normalize “memory-as-a-service” pricing—or backfire if seen as nickel-and-diming Gen Z nostalgia.

📌 Takeaway: Price hikes are running up against consumer pushback, while bundling and feature-gating are emerging as the counterweight.
