Don't judge designers based on their portfolios  👇🏼


I know,

That's probably the only quick and easy way to evaluate someone's design skills.

But that's not the whole story.


Here are some unseen perspectives:

- Many seniors don't have the time to update their portfolios

- Lots of projects can't be included in portfolios because of strict contract terms and NDAs

- Crafting a good portfolio requires lots of time + effort and folks often get stuck in the hamster wheel of perfecting and not publishing

- There's a huge lack of motivation for updating portfolios (rigorous process, tough market, unemployment, ...)

- Many designers aren't comfortable sharing their portfolios with others and asking for feedback

- Not all of the designers have good visual skills

There's a fine line between "Feedback" and "Criticism"

We all received bad feedback, many times

It probably sounded like criticism, judgment,
or even fault-finding sometimes.


Didn't give us any clue:
- What's wrong (+why)
- What to change or improve (+how)
- What's expected

And it yet, made us disappointed and frustrated.


Because of that historical pattern 👇

We tend to get defensive,
Every time we smell someone's about to give us feedback

Which may make us a bit biased
and make it hard to receive even good feedback.


🪴 Feedback is communicating the information to help someone to achieve a goal (better)

Both parties - "Giver" and "Receiver"
are equally involved and responsible

To make this communication as constructive as possible 

by
⏤ Being neutral (and unbiased)
⏤ Asking good questions to make things crystal clear
⏤ Helping each other with ideas and make the "How" easier

⏤ What you should be telling
⏤ How to present your values

↳ Define your audience and market area - and stick to it.


2- Take advantage of "Storytelling"
↳ Show off your relevant skills, knowledge, and experiences

↳ Prove you can do it by showing the impact you've created

↳ Tell a good story about your character, personality, and personal values on your "About" page


3- Focus on visuals (+ Copywriting)
↳ Design your brand and make it consistent

↳ Show you're an artist, with a designer in mind (Artistic but result and purpose-driven)

↳ Use visuals to take your storytelling to the next level (Visual storytelling)
⏤ Visualize what matters in case studies
⏤ Visualize the values you deliver on the landing page
⏤ Visualize whatever you want to emphasize and tell wrapped in great packaging

↳ Write compelling copies like you're trying to market and sell yourself as a product on a landing page
⏤ Consistent brand style and tone of voice
⏤ Clear, creative, and impactful
⏤ Not cliche, not cookie-cutter, and looking like everyone else's
