I'm an aspiring medical speech-language pathologist currently in the second year of my master's degree program at UW–Madison. Raised in the Indian expat community in the United Arab Emirates, I spent my childhood immersed in ethnic, linguistic, and national heterogeneity, which instilled cultural humility and empathy for people of diverse backgrounds that continue to be reinforced throughout my professional life. Moreover, my spoken fluency in four languages (English, Hindi, Konkani, and Kannada) and my formal education in English, Hindi, and Arabic languages enable me to cater to a variety of cultural and linguistic groups. Within half a decade, I trained at healthcare facilities in South Asia, the Middle East, and North America. This has allowed me to gain insight into the scope of speech-language pathology practice, the configuration and operation of healthcare systems, and service delivery models as they vary by region. After qualifying as a speech pathologist in India, I reached clients based in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom through my practice. The cumulative effect of my experience has helped me become more attuned to cultural variations across diverse communities and how they define healthcare and this sensitivity forms the essence of my ethos. My clinical interests are in adult/geriatric rehabilitation and medically complex populations. I aim to establish expertise across the following areas: ➛ Swallowing and swallowing disorders (MBSImP™ Reliability Zone-qualified), ➛ Head and neck cancer, ➛ Voice, ➛ Brain injury, ➛ Cognitive-communication disorders, ➛ Parkinson's disease (SPEAK OUT!® and The LOUD Crowd®-certified) ➛ Aphasia, ➛ Neurogenic communication disorders, ➛ Disorders of consciousness, and ➛ AAC across the lifespan (Certified Student Lingraphica® Specialist). I anticipate graduating in May 2024 having completed student placements in acute care and skilled nursing, as well as two semesters of advanced clinical practicum experiences in outpatient adult neurorehabilitation, and seek to add value to inpatient acute care, inpatient rehab, outpatient adult care, and long-term care facilities as an upcoming speech-language pathology clinical fellow.
