DECONDITIONING - the unlearning process - why it’s important

If you’re a black person who has never once doubted your own ability and/or the ability of another black person, purely on account of being black, then I believe you are truly exceptional. You’re unique. 

That’s because one of the most damaging, pervasive and effective consequences of racism, is to get the victim to genuinely believe that they are simply not good enough, that they should accept their lot, remain where they are, and not progress. 

Call it ‘racist conditioning’. ‘mental slavery’, or ‘mental detention’. the whole idea is to render the victim so mentally powerless that even if the door to the cell is unlocked, they apparently choose to remain in detention. 

That’s why the fight for freedom and equality of opportunity has crucially had to include the careful, sensitive deconditioning of black people from the harmful effects of racism. 

This unlearning process is crucial. 

You could say that us black folk have been on a sort of collective therapy ever since emancipation. I certainly believe so. In fact it is essential to our psychological recovery and progress. 

What do you think the following messages are for, if not to convince us by way of deconditioning of our true worth after centuries of intergenerational trauma which induced harmful learned thoughts and behaviour?—

Black is beautiful
Young gifted and Black
Black power

White people, these messages, and many more, are not intended for you and they are not racist. You already believe you are beautiful, gifted and powerful, as you have not had to endure centuries of rampantly  being told otherwise. 

So let’s not be ignorant of what is happening when black folk devise, prescribe and dispense such positive uplifting affirmations. The purpose is not only motivational but curative i.e., to decondition and to cure us of the psychologically damaging effects of racism. 

These curative deconditioning affirmations, together with seeing black folk in positions of power and influence, are the perfect antidote against the harmful psychological effects of racism. 

All this, whilst some fight tooth and nail to keep us down and conditioned.

So hypped to see my girl Dawn Myers crushing it with her biz Richualist on the big stage!

This really hit me deep.

I have five brothers. 

The oldest is in prison, doing 20+ years. This is recent, so I still grieve and miss him so much every day. I harbor so much blame, wishing I could have saved him. He hustled majority of his life—introduced to the dope game at a very young age due to my father, and he truly felt he never had the opportunities to leave—he carried so many burdens, and trauma. His mother was addicted to drugs growing up, so my mother raised him (same father, different moms)—he watched my father die and held him in his arms after someone shot my father in the head and robbed him. My brother never processed any of it—he felt he never could—he was a man, and he had a family to take care of. From his mom, to his children to his siblings—hustling, holding it in and pushing through was all he knew.

My second to youngest died of a fentanyl overdose. He felt he didn’t have the space to feel, or process his traumas. His mother died from an overdose when we were young, and my mom raised him as well (same father, different moms). He was his moms youngest and struggled with her not being in his life. But he never received the intense therapy, and or help he needed. He numbed his pain with drugs, and they eventually took his life.

My third to youngest (same mom, and dad) watched my brother die. Held him in his arms while he was dying from his overdose. They lived together, and were the same age ( yes, papa was a rolling stone lol). But they were inseparable and he watched his brother die. He won’t go to therapy, won’t seek help and he is suffering from his traumas.

My baby brother, the youngest (same mom, and dad) is gay. He also has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia which runs in our family. He struggles with feeling he never had my father ( he didn’t get a chance to come out to him, or have time with him like the older siblings due to his untimely passing). He also has a rocky relationship with my brothers due to all of the collective trauma. Not to mention he battles with being a Black gay man in America—as well as navigating the healthcare system, and stigmas still surrounding Mental Health.

I pray so much for my brothers, and now I have three Black boys. I try my hardest to provide them with the space and grace to show their emotions—but I know how crucial it is for them to be in spaces with other Black men. Because this—this is what vulnerability, love and healing looks like. 

I pray that Black men continue to curate, and find spaces such as this where they can express themselves and heal. Please share any resources you know, because I will definitely pass them along to my brothers—and if my boys can participate they will as well!

I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Field Organizer at Cori Bush for Congress!

Decolonize language! 

I remember I was told I didn’t originally get the position due to my accent.

The company ended up hiring someone else, but she did not work out so they circled back and offered me the position.

They loved me, and told me I was the best person they’ve ever had in that position. In fact, they still use processes and procedures I put into place years later and I’m no longer there. 

Point is. My language does not define my character, my work ethic, etc. Let’s reframe this way of thinking, and no longer allow standards birthed from white supremacy, to continue to limit people from opportunities simply because they speak or sound differently!

That’s called “acquiescence”. Please for the love of God, look through history books so you can see how it turns out.

This is all an attempt to Blitzkreig (I’m absolutely using that phrase intentionally; if you know your history, then you know why) their way backwards towards a States Rights national default. You know when is the last time the country was operating on objective? DURING JIM CROW. How will abstaining from action help you fight that? 

Black women haven’t even HAD the right for vote for a CENTURY yet. We WILL ABSOLUTELY be the first to lose it. Read through their legislative agenda and see for yourselves.
The less you take it seriously is the faster it will transpire. Ask Iranian women what the differences between 1978 and 1980 looked like if you don’t believe me 🫠

Discuss other options below… or elsewhere. But they must be found. “I’m going to boycott right they’re absolutely itching to snatch from me in the first place!”

This is it.

My childhood was rooted in a great deal of trauma. My mother, and I didn’t have the mother and daughter relationship I yearned for being her only daughter due to her traumas. She was, and still is a huge trigger for me.

Now, I live with her as I’m rebuilding my life from divorce, and living with your childhood trauma and triggers AINT EASY! But I will say it has brought up a few healing conversations—one of them being the way the generations before have normalized trauma. 

In one of our recent conversations I told my mother that I refuse to have the relationship she has with her children with mine, and I am doing everything within my power to do things differently. I am working to allow my children space to be children, grow and express themselves to me—things I was never able to do growing up. As well as I am working towards acknowledging and processing my traumas—so that I can be a better Mother for my boys. I don’t want to sit in my traumas, and allow them to fester causing damage to the relationship with my children. I want them to want to be around me as they grow, and it not be a trigger or traumatizing—something I don’t have. Nor do I want to be stagnant in my dreams, goals, etc—I want to overcome and build in ways those around me have never done before. 

It was emotional saying those things to her—but honestly she needed to hear them. And I needed to say them. It was a release. And one of the ways we break the cycle of normalizing trauma, is by acknowledging it.

Our generation, and those coming after us are breaking so many chains, and creating so many opportunities for healthy minds, bodies and spirits. And THIS is why we are not taking less than from this shitty society—and I am so proud of us, and so grateful to be apart of this movement! 🙌🏾♥️✨

Whew can ANYONE ELSE RELATE?! 

Misdiagnosis effects SO many people, and as he said creates so much anxiety—it can be daunting 😔.

But when you are aware of what it is, and can tap into resources and skills that can help you be successful—it changes lives!

Hey friends 👋🏾,

I know it’s SO hard to be surrounded by people who don’t consider your mental health, or emotional well being. 

Who don’t consider the sacrifices you make daily; the battles that you fight alone because you refuse to burden others; the strength you have to dig up to even find the will to keep fighting; the inner talk you suppress daily to stay positive and pour into others even when you don’t have it yourself.

Who villainize you for speaking your truth; showing emotion; having vulnerable moments; and making mistakes. Taking every opportunity to remind you of what you didn’t do right; yet never celebrating what you have done right.

It’s so hard to continue to stay sober; to stay away from depression & anxiety; to stay focused; to stay peaceful. To stay….here.

People have told me I’ve dealt with too much trauma and loss in a lifetime. Honestly, I have—and it’s hard. Hard to wake up daily, and start anew. With no grief, pain or hurt. Those days I truly cherish. Others like today take work—like being intentional in finding the positive, being mindful of my capacity and not becoming overwhelmed, being aware of what I’m feeling and working hard not to project it onto others. 

I can attest it’s easier to not do the work. To just give up, and I can empathize with why some do. I can’t judge. Especially when so many don’t consider the anguish you endure. And especially when culturally we still deal with the stigma, and dismissive attitudes surrounding mental health. 

But I know you really want to be better, experience peace, give your children peace and continue to provide the essence of peace to those like us who need it. I know it’s obtainable, or at least I’d like to hope that it is. I dream that it is, and I’ve even experienced it in little moments that I cherish—I’m sure you have too. And I’m striving for that to be my life every day—hopefully one day it will be so. Not just for me, but for us all.

And for me I’m more than thankful for friends who say, “You thought about getting a new therapist…” because that’s necessary. So if you’re struggling, I’m passing it along and being that friend to you—and if you need it—we can do this together. But anyway friend here’s some resources I found, and if anyone else knows of resources please share them here as well. Sending peace and love ❤️

Don’t do it alone. 

Don’t do it exhausted.

Don’t do it rushing.

Don’t do it feeling empty.

And again don’t do it alone.

There are so many that will walk with you. People often tell me I’m brave for being so transparent. But the reality is being transparent, and receiving support is what actually made me brave. 

Don’t hide who you are, you’ll miss out on your people. And they’ll miss out on you. Just think—it’s someone waiting in the shadows to see, or hear your story—to feel like they connect and belong in this world!

We are not machines—emote, share your challenges and your wins, love and trust people how you choose to, take breaks, say no, go against the grain, adorn yourself in tattoos and piercings, dress in cosplay, etc. just BE YOU in all the ways! Your joy will exude, and that’s what we all need to be better for ourselves, and for others.

Being human, with no reservations is really the cheat code. 🫶🏽❤️✨

Know your value, and accept nothing less. ♥️✨

Know you’re worthy.

Know you’re deserving.

Know it’s people who wish this for you, even if you feel those around you don’t. 

Just remember, sometimes when beautiful things happen to you—those around you have a hard time accepting you came from the same place—and they’re still in the same place. 

Don’t allow anyone, any place or any thing hinder you—including yourself! ♥️✨

One of the many hats I wear, is a youth trauma facilitator. I rarely share my work here, because I’ve always been a “head down do the work type gal.” Never needed accolades, or kudos for it—but I’m learning that sharing always creates opportunity. Opportunity for community support, as well as for others to receive what’s needed for their personal journey whether it be healing, and or personal growth in other areas. I am a vessel.

I wanted to share this, because I just posted about curating space for Black men—but we also must curate spaces for Black youth. As we know preventative measures, will always be more effective than reactionary ones! 

Yesterday I brought my son with me to my teen group. First time he’s been, and he told me he really enjoyed it—and he’s coming next time lol. A testament to me doing something right!

Just think about it our babies feeling good speaking about their mental health, feeling comfortable, and feeling HEARD! And actually ENJOYING these spaces 🙌🏾♥️✨!

And the fact that it was majority teen boys (7 boys, 2 girls), and they opened up and shared THE WHOLE TIME made my heart full!!!

In light of #NationalPoetryMonth I’ve attached an original poem I wrote entitled, “Had Me Thinking.” That speaks directly to the effects of the #educationsystem omitting true Black, and American History from the curriculum. Further perpetuating the constructs of inferiority, and placing limits on Black and Brown youth.
