Had a fantastic time at the UK Fashion and Textile Association (UKFT): big thanks to Ava, Elizabeth, Amy, Lauren and the entire UKFT team for the invite and for putting together such an inspiring event.

It was great connecting with so many passionate people driving change across our industry, with some deep conversations with Menusha Gunawardhana , Helen White and Brooke Roberts-Islam as a bonus. I also had a chance to connect with our incredible partners at Impact+ Anne Peirson-Smith and Dr Alana James.

The UK Fashion and Textile Association (UKFT) Sustainability Conference brought together a powerful mix of voices, over 250 delegates, 38 speakers and 27 presentations all united by one goal: turning innovation into real-world impact.

Across sessions, we saw what’s next for our industry, breakthrough materials, bio-based dyes, smarter manufacturing systems, and technologies that make recycling and reuse truly scalable. The conversation has clearly shifted from “what if” to “what’s working.”

For Green Story, being part of this forum reinforced what we’ve always believed, that measurable impact sits at the core of sustainable transformation. From mapping supply chains to conducting LCAs and developing Digital Product Passports, we’re here to turn sustainability from aspiration to verified progress.

Can we truly measure the environmental impacts that occur during the consumer use phase of a garment’s life cycle?
While it’s impossible to capture the nuances of every individual behaviour, establishing baselines and scenarios for impact during use is vital. This understanding can help drive more sustainable behaviours and raise awareness across both consumers and brands.

Reflecting on the past few days at the The Textile Institute World Conference, much of the discussion centred around material innovation and end-of-life technologies such as recycling, both critical areas for progress. However, the consumer use phase and the environmental impact linked to everyday care behaviours were often overlooked.

Dr Alana James’ presentation, “Garment care and environmental impact: aligning consumer and industry practices,” addressed exactly this. She explored the practicalities of measuring impact during consumer use and how this data can be applied in meaningful ways.

At IMPACT+, we’re currently working with Green Story to evaluate use and end-of-life impacts through surveys conducted across the UK. This research underscores the importance of understanding what happens after purchase, a crucial step towards a cradle-to-cradle perspective of environmental impact.
