Four. That’s how many seconds it takes me to say the alphabet backwards. What has that got to do with anything? Erm, nothing, really. But I have your attention now. In the 11-and-something years that I’ve been a professional writer, one lesson has followed me along everywhere. And that’s that the most valuable currency in today’s economy is people’s attention. After all this time, I’d like to think I’ve learned a thing or two about getting it. I did it as a digital-media journalist first, hunting for headlines, telling stories, and engaging readers. Hook 'em, engage 'em, retain 'em. But after doing it for seven years, I felt life was getting a little too comfortable. So I packed my bags in 2020, moved out of my home country in the middle of a pandemic, and decided to test myself in business. It brought me to Europe and an MBA classroom with 200 classmates from 50+ countries. As a challenge and as an experience, it was unlike anything I’d been through ever before. Now, I use the same writing nous that I’ve developed for years, as a marketer and brand builder. It’s so different, yet so similar. I still tell stories. I still engage readers.
