What if the best AI systems don’t think for us, but become a tool for thought?

That's just one of questions I was left with after listening to Advait Sarkar"s talk at this week's #TEDAIVienna2025. He said that “Writer’s block used to be about staring at a blank page. Now it’s staring at a page AI has written for me."

We've all had moments when we'd like the answers spelled out for us, and moments when we'd like to pause and think things through. Most users are unlikely to be boxed into one of these two extremes, but may find themselves somewhere along the spectrum in between.

He said that people will probably hate it if we intervene and bluntly ask them to think – much like how they react to cookie consent banners. Striking the right balance comes down to design principles which can:

✅ Foster critical thinking
✅ Enhance creativity
✅ Scaffold metacognition
✅ Improve recall
✅ Strengthen intentionality

So the next time you're building an AI product, consider whether your users want you to spell out the answer, or if they'll delight in having a moment to think for themselves.

AI should take away the friction that impedes us, but preserve the cognition that makes us human.

What if the biggest risk with AI is that you're not going far enough?

At last week’s #TEDAIVienna2025, Des Traynor (Intercom) described his company’s decision to challenge their primary revenue-generating product with an agentic system.

He described how they more than doubled their resolution rate, and said “You have to go too far to go far enough with AI.” To be clear, this is not an endorsement of unsafe AI or some quixotic quest. It’s about:

✅ Systematically evaluating trade-offs
✅ Using AI for your top customer outcomes
✅ Setting stringent success metrics

So the next time you’re weighing how far to go with AI in your product, ask yourself: are you playing it safe for today, or going far enough to matter tomorrow?
