Here’s our ‘how we met’ story for those who don’t know …

I was a dog mom.

Jonathan was a dog dad.

We lived in the same apartment block, and (not that I knew it at the time) 

Jonathan used to listen out for the sound of my dog's collar because it meant that I was walking her, and then take that as his cue to walk his dog so that we had a little meet-cute moment in the hallway. Pretty romantic, right?

What wasn’t romantic was that for the LONGEST time (longer than I’d like to admit) I knew him as “Shiner’s Dad” and I could never bring myself to ask him what his name was again 😂

(*Does that ever happen to you?)

Anyway, he didn't actually ask me out until he moved out because he didn’t wanna make things awkward. But he finally asked and, of course, you know our dogs had to be IN the wedding party as our flower girl and ring bearer 🥰

Since then we’ve had many years of dog-walking, child-bearing, juggling life, kids and business all while learning more and more about each other everyday.

So thanks Jonathan for always being my “power-up” when I’m transitioning to the next level, for being my rock when I need your strength and for being my marshmallow when I need all the squishiness.

“I would NOT recommend that!”

Ever had your client go against what you suggested even though you KNOW that their approach won’t work…

…then they hold you accountable for the results of the idea that was NOT yours. 

I’m sure we’ve all been there, right? 🙋‍♀️ 

In particular, I’ve noticed this a LOT with marketing service providers (I used to have a marketing agency myself). 

You dial in your messaging, branding, entire promotional campaign, finalize your targeted strategy - and then someone, not even always the owner, comes in with some sideways idea that takes the entire campaign back to square one and it directly goes against everything that you’ve been hired for. 

I know it can be uncomfortable to go against the person that’s paying you, but they hired you for a reason 🤷‍♀️ 

And you’re going to lose the business anyway when the results come back and they blame you for it. 

So repeat after me; 

“That’s not what I would recommend. That being said, you’re paying me so I’ll do it for you as long as I’m not held accountable for the results”

People change their tune real damn quick when you hold honest boundaries and manage expectations in the most clear way possible. 

Make no mistake - sales are happening DURING and after the client relationship too - not just before.

The passive people are the ones who buy from the aggressive people and it guts me to watch.

Because it’s those SAME passive business owners who can’t imitate the ‘foolproof strategy’ that they’re taught because it’s so uncomfortable for them.

I went to an event a couple years ago, and some aggressive hype-bro dude (let’s call him Salesy Steve) used his speaker slot to aggressively come in HOT pitch slapping all of us for a full hour.

Here’s the general idea of his slot:

“The Devil going to tell you not to invest in yourself - don’t listen."

“Can I get an hell yea?”

“LOUDER!”

“Making less than $500k each year will drive you into an early grave!”

“Your energy is making you BROKE!”

Now here’s the thing… that’s his approach - and it works (majorly!) for HIM.
But how many of y’all reading this post would feel comfortable selling in this exact same way?

*My thoughts exactly 🙄

Your sales strategy should be as individual as YOU are - and the Salesy Steve’s out there saying “Just do what I do!” are not actually any kind of expert at anything except what works for them.

So, it’s so important to understand that if you’re buying into the high-pressure aggressive approach, then be prepared that they will push you to have the same aggressive approach.

Then gaslight you when it doesn’t work for you by saying its your “mindset.”

How to TURN OFF your prospect in 0.01 seconds…

👉 Tell them all the sh*t they’re doing is WRONG 🤷‍♀️ 

Sometimes experts can accidentally think that telling someone everything they’re doing wrong (because you know what to do right) will somehow sell them on you. 

And I don’t mean that you shouldn’t highlight areas that are opportunities for improvement - but most (good) clients don’t take well to being slammed and ripped apart as your strategy to get them over the line. 

Acknowledging what IS working as well as what isn’t working helps to create a well-rounded perspective of the immediate focus areas when they start working with you. 

I’m sure we’ve all had this experience right? 

Someone dropping into your inbox and telling you that you’re doing it all wrong?

The dreaded triggers of a failed sale 😔 

Ever had that feeling when you get to that pivotal moment in a sales call and you can already FEEL the weight from when you have had a prospect reject your offer?

Then you get to invest that into more leads KNOWING with confidence you will close 6 out of 10 or 8 out of 10 or whatever!

Would you hire an ‘uncertain’ business owner…?

Someone who’s hesitant about their offer, their service or how they can help you? 

*Umm, I didn’t think so. 

In a sales call, there is a limited timeframe to build rapport, take a peek under the hood of your prospects' business and create a plan to achieve their goals with your expertise and support that establishes trust. 

If, during that process, your prospect gets the feeling that you’re unsure about what you offer, it creates a disconnect that takes a LOT of work to repair. 

So here’s a small tweak that will fix it before it even becomes an issue 😏 

👉 Remove “I think” from your vocabulary during sales conversations. 

Especially if it’s something actually based on your experience and data (usually it is)!

The unexpected bonus of a clear commitment to no nightmare clients - is an increase in more of the right clients. 

I see it all the time…

The fear of being explicit about who doesn’t get results with you, or who you don’t want to work with because you naturally think it will decrease your sales. 

There’s the same fear around niching but if you’re for everyone, you’re for no one (you’ve heard that right?). The riches are in the niches! 

And the more you repel, the more you sell. 

I’m not talking about repelling in a negative way that feels like “EW you’re NOT my ideal client. Stay away.” 

I’m talking about repelling in a way that empowers people to make the best decision for them. 

When you present it in a transparent way, it builds significantly more trust than only talking about the good clients and the good results.

Here’s what I love the MOST about the Black Sheep Method…

No matter how big or small your business is, what industry you work in or what service you offer - you get to do it with integrity that feels aligned to YOU! That “you” is crucial.

This is NOT a method for the Salesy Steve’s, the Aggressive Andrew’s or the Hype-Bro Harry’s who give their prospects more attention than their clients.

This is a method for the business owners who are sick of feeling like they “better get uncomfortable” if they want to make sales (it’s NOT TRUE!!!!).

All the cheerleaders and no clients…🤷‍♀️ 

Ever feel like you have this ‘ride or die’ audience who hang onto your every word, tell you how much they value what you say… yet never buy a single thing from you?

There’s this weird culture across social media and business that you’re some kind of hero or martyr if you STRUGGLE through your business. 

Like, if it’s ‘hard AF’ you’re doing something right - that’s how it should feel. 🙄

The remnants of Hustle Culture piercing into our joyful peace 😂 

I’ve noticed that there’s two BIG reasons why people take the scenic and uncomfortable route in their sales journey;

1) They feel like its somehow ‘cheating’ to hire an expert to help them and that it’s way more heroic to figure it all themselves. They label themselves as perfectionists and control freaks in order to justify playing small and not expanding or receiving help from others. This increases the time to success, it increases how painful it is to get there and increases likelihood of getting discouraged and giving up. It’s very hard to watch 😞

or…

2) They have been burned in the past by some in-your-face guru who majorly overpromised, underdelivered and then BLAMED them for struggling to implement their gross strategy 🙄 

There are no shortcuts in business EXCEPT hiring someone who has done what you want to do who can break it down for you.

I’m about to go against the advice of most “business coaches” out there 👇 

❌ Don’t randomly inflate the price of your service to get more cash. 

OK now before y’all come at me, I need to tell you about a recent conversation that I had with a client who spiraled into a world of sales pain after doubling the price of her offer because her business coach told her to. 

Let’s call her Mandy. 

Mandy’s offer was originally priced at $1,000. Her service sold effortlessly and she truly enjoyed delivering her package, her clients got great results and everyone was happy.

But Mandy had bigger financial goals, so her coach at the time told her to increase her prices. 

She increased her prices from $1000 to $1500 - it still easily sold

Then from $1500 to $2000 - it still easily sold

Then from $2000 to $3500 - hard to convert and it felt like pulling teeth.

Then from $3500 to $5000 - no one has bought it even once

Now she can no longer sell her service.

Her revenue plummeted, sales was a struggle she dreads, and she felt like she was constantly in ‘convincing mode’, starting to question her value and if she should even continue in business or start applying for jobs.

Increasing her prices and disregarding what her market was telling her with their dollars had a massively negative effect on her business. 

She wound up impacting so many fewer people and making far LESS money than she had made when her services were below $2,000.

It should also be mentioned there was ZERO overhead to deliver her service outside of the time she invested.

She also felt well compensated for her time below $2,000 - not resentful at all. 

So, there was really no reason to increase it. 

The moral of the story; 

If YOU are happy to deliver your service at the level you’re compensated, people are buying it and you want to scale your revenue - 

“DOUBLE YOUR PRICES, DUDE” with zero regard for your market, audience, expenses, etc. is a lazy solution.

Especially if that price bracket doesn’t align with the service package that you are offering or the audience you’re serving.

💡 Today’s Top Tip: Don’t wee-wee on your website!

Ok, hear me out…😂 

What I mean by ‘wee-wee’ is overdoing it with the “here’s what WE do” when promoting and selling your service. 

👉 It’s the name-dropping

👉 It’s talking about YOUR systems

👉 YOUR vision, philosophy, mission, etc. 

👉 YOUR ideas without connecting them to what your client actually wants

I don’t care if you’re Batman’s personal butthole waxer UNLESS I know how that helps me!

Connect the RESULT for your ideal client. 

THAT’S the approach that you need to adopt when communicating with your prospects to get shit-hot at bringing the RIGHT clients on without breaking a sweat 🔥

❌ This NEVER ends well y’all!

There’s a lot of shaming in the online sales industry that everyone can buy your offer and if they don’t - it’s because you’re not doing a good job selling the value.

It’s often prefaced with a story like “If you offered someone a winning million dollar lottery ticket in exchange for $10k - they would do whatever they could to find that $10k. 

So, if someone isn’t finding the money to work with you - it’s ‘your fault’ and you need to get better at selling the value so it’s a no-brainer.

There is no consideration of the buyer’s best interests in this philosophy.

There is no consideration that maybe you should target a different audience who doesn’t have to borrow from grandma to buy from you. 

There is no consideration that some people aren’t even driven by money (is that shocking?)

I have a steadfast rule - no one is going into debt to work with me. 

That starts the relationship from scarcity, fear and the pressure it creates is bad juju for success.

So let’s call a spade a spade, right? 🤷‍♀️ 

If you're hearing ‘no’ all the time - that's an issue, my friend.

And it could be for a bunch of different reasons. 

👉 Your targeting is off

👉 Your messaging is off

👉 Your offer needs some work

👉 Your ‘pitch’ is coming in way too hot 

Either way - there’s SOMETHING!

And IMO, it’s a lazy approach as a sales coach, expert, strategist, director, manager, etc. to force you to make the same mistake over and over instead of addressing the giant pink sales elephant in the room.

DOUBLE YOUR PRICES! 💵 💸 

*Yuk, ever had a sales or business coach tell you to this as a ‘strategy’ to make more money in your business? 

I’ve have heard too many stories about the messy aftermath of business owners doing this and are then left picking up the pieces months or even YEARS later. 

That’s not to say that raising your prices is a big no-no, but there are some basic business principles that will allow you to do it without experiencing a massive sales drought when you do it. 

Here are the signs that you actually DO need to raise your prices: 

1) You have run out of capacity to take on new clients due to the demand of your existing clients (basic principle of supply and demand here)

2) The level of service you are offering does not align with the income you’re generating (ie: custom and personalized services for DIY prices) 

3) You feel extremely resentful every time you work with your clients because you’re not making enough 

4) You have added more VALUE and experience to your service packages over the years and have not increased your prices to reflect that 

5) You have high overhead that results in you making significantly less profits

6) People are buying wayyyy to easily (because it’s priced so low)

These are NOT reasons to increase your price that I’ve heard lately: 

1) Some other person who is your competition charges more (who cares - are they actually SELLING it at that price, does it include the same stuff as you, etc.)

2) Someone who is selling something completely different than you with a different audience increased their prices and it worked for them

3) It’s part of a manifestation strategy (if you feel out of alignment with it, it’s not manifesting sh*t)

4) Just because (seriously what?)
