I am presenting a sneak peek from my meta-analysis of the ninth edition of "𝗠𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱'𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 – 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱" by the Deutsche Bank Research Institute, which examines long-term trends in global pricing.

I have visualized the dynamic change in 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 across major economies 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰.

This bump plot reveals some truly spectacular movements in the relative cost landscape over nearly a quarter-century:

𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗨𝗣 (𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟬–𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰)

The analysis highlights several economies that climbed significantly in the price rankings:

• 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗭𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 jumped +𝟮𝟬 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀.
• 𝗟𝘂𝘅𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗴 moved up +14 places. (Luxembourg is noted elsewhere in the report for having the best quality of life score, bolstered by its strong PPP).
• 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮 climbed +14 places.
• 𝗦𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶 𝗔𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗮 advanced +12 places.
• 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝘇𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 moved up +11 places.
• 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗔𝗘 also climbed +11 places.

𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗗𝗢𝗪𝗡 (𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟬–𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰)

Conversely, other major economies saw their relative price positions decline dramatically:

• 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻 experienced the steepest fall, 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟮𝟯 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 since 2000. The report suggests this decline is largely attributed to Japan "paying the price for excesses that peaked in the early 1990s".
• 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗼𝗻𝗴 also slid significantly, declining more than 10 places.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗦 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗦𝗔 itself saw volatility; while its net rank moved from 2nd in 2000 to 3rd in 2024, it had declined 16 places between 2000 and 2010 before rebounding. This rebound and rise near the top of the charts are partly linked to a strong dollar, but the deeper cause is "𝘜𝘚 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘮, 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘩, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 (𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘭𝘦𝘥)". However, the report suggests that 2025 may represent "𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗨𝗦" in pricing terms due to the domestic policy mix, hinting at a potential correction ahead. 

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the analysis points out how relatively "cheap" countries like India remain, even though 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮 is expected to become the 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗱-𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 by the end of the decade. Indian cities may have the most ground to climb in future price rankings, which could be relevant to real estate investors.

Money Buys Happiness?

I recently featured the newly released 𝗠𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 – 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 report by the Deutsche Bank Research Institute. It’s a fascinating publication, and as someone who’s deeply interested in data, I couldn’t resist creating a few visualizations of my own.

In these scatter plots comparing 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸 against 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸, one might expect to see an illustration of the classic trade-off between enjoying a pleasant life and earning big money. In reality, however, the data tells a different story: it shows a strong correlation between a city’s 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 (𝗤𝗼𝗟) ranking and its ranking in the 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅 (𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀).

In simple terms: cities that offer a better quality of life are usually the same places where residents maintain the highest levels of disposable income.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗩𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱?

The 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅 is calculated empirically using various sub-indices, including consumer purchasing power parity (PPP), safety, healthcare, cost of living, housing affordability, pollution, climate, and commute time.

The 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 ranks cities based on the net monthly salary of two working persons after factoring in taxes and the cost of renting a 3-bedroom apartment in the city center.

𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘆

•	𝗟𝘂𝘅𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗴 stands out, ranking 𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 and 𝟰𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. Its strong 𝗣𝗣𝗣, 𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝘁𝗲 contribute significantly to its rate.
•	𝗦𝘄𝗶𝘀𝘀 cities dominate income rankings despite rising living costs. 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗮 ranks 𝟲𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗤𝗼𝗟 and an impressive 𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲, while 𝗭𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗵 holds 𝟴𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟮𝗻𝗱, respectively. Both are among the most expensive cities worldwide.
•	𝗖𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻 (𝟮𝗻𝗱 𝗤𝗼𝗟, 𝟲𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲) and 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗳𝘂𝗿𝘁 (𝟳𝘁𝗵 𝗤𝗼𝗟, 𝟱𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲) also appear in the global top ten for both metrics.

Overall, these cities suggest that places offering objectively high living standards, tend to provide 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, even after accounting for high expenses like rent.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

An outlier in this pattern is the 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗨.𝗦. 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 from the top 10 in both categories. Despite cities like 𝗦𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼 and 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝗿𝗸 offering some of the highest gross salaries in the world, 𝘀𝗸𝘆𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 erode disposable income.

And regarding the question at the beginning: does money buy happiness? The data suggests it might. Do you agree?
