When I came up with the idea to start an online coaching business platform in 2016, the thought of coaching and teaching online was still very exotic - at least in the German-speaking markets.

I wanted to change that and pitched the idea to my co-founder.

In 2020, when Covid broke out, it was our time to shine.

Instead of offering our services to businesses, however, we pivoted to B2C.

Today, Coachremotely provides a platform (and tools) for coaches, creators, and experts to package, market, and monetize their passion. --> app.coachremote.ly

Our passion - besides online learning - is sports. As a teenager, I wanted to become a sports commentator myself. Today, my co-founder and I are running our signature course on sports broadcasting on the very same platform. Through collaborations with several broadcasters & TV channels, we managed to help dozens of students to get a job and live their dream as sports commentators.

I was originally promised the position of Head of Operations when I came on board at Tirendo. A dear colleague was picked by the management team instead, while I had to find my place on the team with a slightly different focus.

Having been a car nerd for a large portion of my life, I was made responsible for supplier relationships, brand deals, and understanding the product. 

Being a marketing-focused start-up, I was one of few people who understood the car and automotive world.


Achievements and things I'm proud of:

- I managed to build great relationships with the biggest tire suppliers in the world

- I was responsible to manage our product catalogue and master data, with the support of our supplier Cartomak

- I struck large TV placement deals with several of the biggest tire brands in the world, having had little to no experience in this field before.

- I was the key person for our main product (tires), empowering Online marketing, Offline marketing, Operations, Finance, Customer Service, Product Management, Team international, and our IT department to excel at their jobs.


This job allowed me to make a massive step in my career, growing to a more senior level. I am deeply grateful for the friendships, connections, and experiences that I made during this chapter.

GLOSSYBOX

I was hired as an Operations Manager for 'Glossybox Style', a 'Glossybox' venture trading shoes, bags, and accessories. 

Having worked with Magento previously, my first task was to figure out what was wrong with our ERP system and warehouse sync.

This being a fast-paced start-up, my role quickly changed after only three months, as 'GB Style' was discontinued, and I was now working in the 'GB Beauty' Operations team.

One of my assets early on was, that I was able to speak the "language of many" - I had a great relationship with the warehouse staff, in-house developers, customer service, marketing, and sales team.

At one point, my boss handed over shared responsibility for the packaging, profile mapping, and delivery of 50k boxes to my colleague and me. Our job was to make sure, that the Glossyboxes were delivered on time every month. Long-term planning and good project management were just as important, as making short-term adjustments since the brand was still young and growing, and quantities sometimes had to be adjusted.

I'm very grateful to have had this experience, the top 3 learnings for me were:

1. As a startup entrepreneur, you always have to be prepared for the unknown
2. Sometimes, you have to say yes to an opportunity, and figure out how later
3. If you say yes, make sure you communicate your challenges and struggles to your manager clearly, otherwise mistakes will be on you.

After having learned a lot about myself and the consulting business at Volkswagen Consulting, I decided to pursue my entrepreneurial career in the startup world of Berlin.

What better place to learn, than from people who have already done it successfully many times over?

When I came to Berlin, my major goal was to learn as much as possible about ALL departments of an online business.

Here at Returbo, I started out in the Operations department, having had very close ties to the Customer service department. We were literally sharing one room, and I loved the opportunity to learn about customer complaints and common problems on the fly and to solve them on the back-end simultaneously. The pace was high, and I loved it.

It was a fascinating experience that I enjoyed a lot. It was probably the job that made me aware the most, that I have a knack for customer satisfaction and processes. I have to thank my mentor Niels Kokkeel, who is a brilliant mind and despite his young age at the time appeared more senior, than many other managers I was working under during my career.

...No seriously, I was very much looking forward to this opportunity. Having just graduated from University, I wasn't quite sure what was waiting for me. I was hired as a 'student consultant', which sits somewhere between an internship and a full-time position. 

I assumed that being a member of a junior consulting organization on campus would have prepared me for this job. But having studied Philosophy and Business Administration, I felt pretty much lost.

How could this job be so far away from everything that I learned so far?

In hindsight, many of the things that have been going on at the time, are now clear and obvious. As a Junior with no experience, this was a scary position to be in. 

I felt a lot of pressure from my bosses to deliver work on time, while learning abbreviations, having to memorize tons of names, clients, co-workers, their roles etc. As a junior, this was a lot to handle for me.

However, I learned how to do slides, eventually. It was my number 1 daily activity. And even though I was nowhere near as good as my peers, and light-years away from my experience superiors, I learned a lot. 

It has become an invaluable skill that helped me a lot throughout my career.

Also, I received highly valuable feedback from my boss, which I only understood much later in life. He told me: "Alex, you are a creative person. This is not the right place for you."

At the time, I didn't understand this feedback at all.

I started my first company in the first week of my studies. Oh boy, I had NO idea what I was doing (even though being a young arrogant, know-it-all, I thought I did). But damn, being a (first-time) entrepreneur was the most amazing feeling!

Having had a partner who was 13 years my senior helped me a lot. I learned not only about business, but also about partnerships, people, and different personalities.

My activities were mostly focused on acquiring funding for my clients' concerts, building a sales database, finding venues, and orchestrating the creation of a professional website. I also hosted a few events myself. 

I was learning how to do all these things on the fly, having had almost zero professional experience prior to that.

I'm grateful for the friends I made, the lessons learned, and the beautiful places I got to see thanks to my work. An amazing experience, that I wouldn't want to miss.
