I was asked to judge at the D&AD’s Newblood Awards as part of the Penguin Random House brief at the D&AD, 2023. I worked as part of a team of other judges from other agencies to decide who should be shortlisted and win. After the event I provided constructive feedback to shortlisted entrants on a 1-2-1 basis.

Shillington Education

I taught graphic design, branding and brand strategy to students every Wednesday & Thursday evening. All students graduate with a portfolio and website showcasing their best branding, packaging, print and digital design projects so it was crucial here to not only provide conceptual guidance, but also teach students from wide and diverse backgrounds the technical skills they needed to make it in the industry. I loved seeing how far the students had come every week with their design work. I decided to leave this role as I wanted to give more focus to our own studio's practice and delivering stellar work for our clients.

In 2019, the D&AD invited us to host a series of craft–based technical workshops where people learnt both a brief history of typography and how to make their own font out of paper, from scratch. I managed the AXA PPP Health Tech And You Awards at the Design Museum. I developed a spreadsheet where all income and outgoings were updated at the end of each day for an exhibition at the Design Museum. This gave me a good understanding of whether we needed to negotiate, cut back or consider other solutions to the design brief. A reference from the lead project manager: "Alexandra Lunn worked at The Beautiful Meme as project manager in April 2017. Alexandra’s input included negotiating budgets risk assessing and following up with the client fabricators and all exhibitors with written agreements. When working as part of a small team at Jonathan Barnbrook I developed the visual identity for the exhibition: California: Designing Freedom at the Design Museum, 2017. I worked on several concepts for the show which gave me a real passion for telling stories through visual design. Whilst here, I also assisted with editorial projects including Pink Floyd: Their Mortal Remains at the V&A. “Alexandra is a uniquely intelligent designer. Not only does she have a sharp mind in dealing with design problems, she is also very active in the design community with promoting, social design. Metahaven

Metahaven is a research and design studio based in The Netherlands. I produced a music video for Holly Herndon, and created an animation for the exhibition ‘A Glass Darkly Lit’ (NL). I worked effectively with directors and colleagues at all times. When working on the music video, it was my responsibility to source all locations, organise equipment, liaise with clients and help film and then edit the video. We used Black Magic, Red Epic and Go Pro cameras and once all footage was filmed, I organised everything into a system that was easy for others to work with.

Glasgow School of Art

I was chair of the student committee for Communications Design at the Glasgow School of Art. I listened to my peers' concerns and fed back their messages to the department every quarter, which improved communication between the department and its students. This gave me valuable insight into the inner workings of an academic structure and also taught me how to listen and communicate well with colleagues and peers in order to get the results that benefitted all of us. I found that clear and precise face to face communication between both peers and tutors was the most effective. I then took a year out to complete an Erasmus Scholarship in Animation in Budapest.

Weekend Brand Identity 🍸

Amsterdam and Belgium-based design studio, FCKLCK☘️STUDIO, decodes the brand for WEEKEND® DRINKS, blending the casual charm of a bar napkin with the organizational prowess of Google Calendar. Tasked with revitalizing the Belgian-based brand "Dorst," FCKLCK aimed to make it more culturally resonant and impactful. Originally operating as a B2B brand, Dorst focused on convenience and efficiency, offering high-quality pre-batched cocktails on tap directly to bars or events. However, with the company in a growth phase, expanding production, hiring more staff, and introducing new products, it sought to tap into new D2C and retail markets. In selecting a new name, the studio prioritized evoking emotion and concept over mere description. While initially considering "every drink is a journey," this was found limiting. Instead, the team sought a name that would embody the brand's core benefits: convenience and ease of use. The goal was to capture the effortless enhancement their product brings to any occasion, leading to the birth of Weekend Drinks.

The design journey for Weekend Drinks was an ode to the contrasting rhythms of weekdays and weekends. Weekdays epitomize structure and routine, a world of straight lines and strict schedules. In contrast, weekends embody a carefree, effortless vibe, where spontaneity rules and every moment feels like a mini adventure. To translate this dynamic, the studio envisioned a unique fusion: imagine if a bar napkin and Google Calendar had a love child. This concept became the driving force behind the design, blending the casual charm of a scribbled note with the organized efficiency of a digital planner. The visual language took shape through a graphic system that danced along the edges of structure and whimsy. Utilizing the typeface Highway VAR - 6 by Otherwhere Collective, the design embraced a rigid and disciplined aesthetic, drawing inspiration from the clean lines and organization of calendars and planners. But to infuse the design with a sense of playfulness and humanity, the studio introduced a custom handwritten font, Weekend By Hand. This brought a touch of spontaneity and personalization, mimicking the doodles and scribbles one might find on a weekend shopping list or a playful note left for a loved one. With glyphs for 3 language sets and 7 variables per character, Weekend By Hand added a versatile and lively element to the brand's visual identity, ensuring it could adapt to any medium or application with ease. FCKLCK's creative process resulted in a brand that thrives on contrasts. As Co-founder and Creative Director, James Kruger, describes it, "Picture a bar napkin merging with Google Calendar, and you'll get the idea." This analogy vividly captures the brand's essence: a blend of relaxed charm and structured precision.

Here's a brand identity we created for Studio West who put community at the core of everything they do. 

Their annual exhibition and events programme features the work of the UK's most exciting emerging and newly established artists. For collectors, they offer the opportunity to learn more about London's vibrant emerging art scene and purchase artwork made by incredibly promising UK-based talents.

Back in 2021 we supported founder Caroline with a strategy and naming piece, that then allowed us to then work on a logo, colour palette and interior and exterior signage for the gallery. We also created the foundations of their website.

The last page features "Stone Pine" by Sholto Blissett—oil on canvas on board, 61 x 61 cm.
